Bobby Kimball's Toto in Schaumburg, IL-Labor Day Weekend

Postby mrsromek » Fri Jun 26, 2009 8:27 pm

Read this the other day and thought I would pass it along to the Toto fans out there. I think he is playing on Sunday of that weekend.

Bobby Kimball's Toto? Seriously?

This is too bad....the couple times I met him he was such a genuinely nice guy. Always loved his singing, but really sad it's come to this. I am hoping he gets somewhere with that AKA thing w/Billy Sherwood, at least that will get him out singing in a legitimate new band.

Hmmm.
It's not listed on his website.
This means he is either internet illiterate (possible).
OR, he doesn't want Luke to find out and call him out for his “karaoke shit version of TOTO” again (much more likely).
Is Bobby back on the nose candy?
What other possible explanation could there be for him to rape the legacy against the explicit wishes of both the band and the fanbase?
I was ok with him doing it overseas briefly, but this crosses a line.
Come the 35th anniversary, he just may find himself shut out in the cold.
Bring on the JSS era!

He needs to make a living like the rest of us. You have to remember that while Toto probably made some decent cash playing big venues in Europe, most of the money from recordings is in publishing and such, which goes to the writers, of which Bobby was not generally one of.

His website hasn't been updated in awhile...I imagine this is why. I also imagine he will get sued to oblivion for using the name Toto as such without an agreement between him and Luke or Paich.

There's the touchy example of Asia featuring John Payne...kind of an equally sketchy band but at least was the result of a legal agreement between Payne and the original band.

Bobby's such a nice guy and a phenomenal singer...it makes me very sad to see this, given that with a little effort he could have probably found better and less controversial outlets for his talent.

I don't get too outraged... the guy is what, 58 or something? It's hard enough to break into the music industry as a fresh-faced young guy, do you really think this guy (who is not a household name to begin with) could really establish something on his own to bring some bread home? Not a chance. Let him use the Toto name. I won't go see it without Luke, but still... the guy doesn't really have any other choice.

I kinda thought that was the point of his new band AKA.
With Kimball on board, as well as members of YES, they could cover the hits of two classic bands.
Surely some promoters would nibble at it.

STARSHIP starring MICKEY THOMAS / TOTO's BOBBY KIMBALL
This is how it's advertised on the website. Although only slightly different there is a difference between Bobby Kimball's Toto & Toto's Bobby Kimball. Usually they say artists such as Bobby are advertised as Bobby Kimball of Toto or formely of Toto. Either way you have to be VERY careful how you bill yourself. But let's be clear despite your headline he's not saying it's Bobby Kimballs' Toto. http://www.ci.schaumburg.il.us/septemberfest/index.html

Again let me remind you all of a key distinction: A lot of times, the way they are billed by their venues is out of their hands. Now, I haven't looked at his Web site so I don't know what's on there, but keep that in mind. Even Luke himself expressed concern in the online interviews he did leading up to his last tour that the small venues he was playing on his first ECT tour were going to bill him as Toto or what not.

In that case, it seems this story was much ado over nothing...
Too bad the cease and desist letters have probably already gone out, and TOTO’s pack of ravenous corporate lawyers are descending on Bobby’s Louisiana gumbo shack as we speak.
By the time they’re through with him he won’t even have his trademark Stalin mustache leftover.
Poor bastard.
