Ok, Help a Journey fan get into Toto

Postby Rockindeano » Sun Dec 18, 2005 6:12 pm

I love Andrew so much, and respect his word, where does a Journey fan, the biggest of all, go to start to get into Toto?

Let me hear it.
I've heard Toto being one of the bands with the best musicians, but it's hard to argue against Journey for that award. Toto: help me out. please.

Thanks in advance.

Well, im not sure about Andrew's suggestions - I loathe to suggest Sony's PAST TO PRESENT Greatest Hits album, I think there was a better greatest hits album released in the mid 90's

But if I were to choose any two albums that would sum up a good introduction to TOTO it would be their grammy winning TOTO IV (red cover, Gold logo and sword) and aargh its a toss up between Fahrenheit and Kingdom of Desire.

Seriously though TOTO are a great band, capable of many different genre's (often a good selection on each album)

If you only limit yourself to one CD, buy TOTO IV (the album everyone has sitting in their vinyl collection somewhere) if you hate this album, you'll probably never settle into TOTO.

I love Journey (dont worship them) and I love TOTO so its possible to like both. but they are different animals music wise, like them all :) and remember you'll never know if you like them without trying.
Regards,
Jim.

First you have to take a Journey and leave Kansas.

Buy their Greatest hits first, that came out in the late 80's, It's a good greatest hits, could have been done better.

Buy 4,7, Fahrenheit, toto, Mindfields, if your into a more pop rock sound.

For a more hard rock sound-Kingdom of Desire, Hydra, Isolation

Avoid-Tambu, Through the Looking Glass, Turn Back, or any other Toto cd being with the letter T  -ERIC

I got hooked on Toto from the start. I listened to the first two albums Toto & Hydra until I wore them out. I've been listening to them alot lately & it brings back some cool memories. It's kinda cool that I loved Toto & Steve Lukather so much & I now write for his website & he knows who I am.

KOD is my pick. I like some of the 70s and 80s Toto but prefer the Luke fronted albums. Mindfields has great moments.
The 25th Anniversary DVD from Amsterdam is awesome.

Deano..
I'm a fairly new Toto fan- I didn't really explore much of their catalogue until I saw "Live In Amsterdam"; The concert had a huge medley that included a lot of songs that weren't really hits, but I guess are considered fan favorites. They have some great stuff that the majority of people have no idea about; songs like "English Eyes", "Girl Goodbye", "White Sister" and "Lion".

For the U.S., they really need to have a more complete hits collection issued; "Past To Present" and "Essential" just don't showcase enough of the lesser known gems. If I had to pick one of those collections, I guess I'd have to go with "Essential", but I think to see what the band is really about, you need to dig into quite a few of the individual albums.

I actually would not suggest "Toto IV" to start.. It's not a bad album, but it's very soft, and the majority of what's essential on that one has been all over radio for years.

"Isolation" was a good choice, it's one of my faves.. It's a unique album for the group; their sound had a slightly harder edge with this one, and it's the only album to feature Fergie Fredrickson(sp?) on vox; there's actually a couple of songs where he reminds me (slightly) of Steve Perry.

I can't comment too much on "Kingdom", I do kinda dig "Don't Chain My Heart", but I haven't had a chance to sample many of the other songs.

It all depends on what kinda stuff you like.. Personally, I would suggest checking out their debut album("Toto"); "Hydra" and to go against what some of the other members have said, I would would try "Turn Back".
This gives you all of the stages before they had their big break with "Toto IV". I think their debut album is great, it rocks, but it also has a little bit of a mild funk element on certain tracks- not to mention a touch of art/rock.

"Hydra" isn't that different from the debut, but it maybe has a slightly harder edge.

"Turn Back" has actually become one of my faves. Out of the first three albums, it probably is the most pop/rock oriented, but don't get me wrong, it still has traces of art/rock(the title track comes to mind), and it features a ballad or two. The biggest difference to me is that the funk has pretty much vanished with this one.

Those are my suggestions to start; like I said, it depends on what you like. I really dig the sound of the first three albums, and then "Isolation". Once you get into the albums between "Isolation" and "Kingdom Of Desire", a lot of the songs have more of a dance sound, which may or may not be your thing.

Ya know - with all the hype on this one (return of Joseph, 1st single), etc I hope it does well. Still - "King of the World" - is beyond expectations..

My thoughts exactly.

AOR rules is from Scandinavia, so I was wondering if radio was different there.

NO WAY Toto gets airplay in the States or Canada.

I do LOVE KOD however.

I agree about radio Deano...

That's why Toto barely tours the states and sells out in Europe, Japan and the rest of the world.

I love KOD too, but I think Tambu is still my favorite of theirs.

I wouldnt say our airwaves are some kind of AOR heaven as national radio doesn´t play even Toto which is most popular AOR band here. But local stations are giving them airplay, well at least Rosanna, Hold the line and Africa can be heard quite often in radio.

Here in Australia, those 3 songs are heard the most. Thats all they ever play from TOTO here, as if thats all they ever done. I know hits are what raido stations encourage, but it would be nice to hear some other awesome TOTO songs aswell, rather than just Africa all the time.

Hey there, I started reading this thread and decided to do as Deano and check out some ToTo. I have always had a fondness for the radio singles, but know little else about them. So, after reading this, I am now listening to Kingdom Of Desire. I am only on track two, but I really like this one. The first one didn't do so much for me.

Who was the 'primary' vocalist on this one?

Dave,

That would be my man, Steve 'Luke' Lukather...! (my avatar)

He actually is the guitarist, but KOD is the first album that he took lead vocal duties for the first time.

2nd song..? That would be Dont Chain My Heart..?

Cheers.
