Underrated Luke lead guitar moments in Toto

Postby Ehwmatt » Wed Dec 10, 2008 4:55 am

Share 'em. Keep it to the Toto catalogue!

For my money, the outro solo in Only The Children is one of them. That HUGE bend, the big delay, and then some classic Lukeisms - the fast double stops, quick scalar runs and plenty of melody. Love that solo. Had to pick up my guitar and transcribe it the second I heard it. It was fucking hard hearing that last run he does, damn fade-outs on guitar solos!

Out Of Love is another one... pure emotion

and probably

I'll Be Over You - It's a well-known song, but I don't know if people think of it for its solos so much. Both are great. Bonus points for an emotional lead vocal from the man himself.

Without Your Love
While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Great solo and a nice outro too....

If you talk about live performances, then for me, it would have to be the following outro's :

I Will Remember
I'll Be Over You
Stop Loving You
Only The Children
While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Cheers

Oh, I know a good one I forgot

The Live in Amsterdam Gift With a Golden Gun

That solo is awesome, especially the outro reprise of it.

I love the extended solo at the end of live (electric) versions of "Stop Loving You." It's only about a minute long but it's so fluid and melodic, with a great hard ending that is so much more satisfying than the lame fade-out...I wish they'd let the album cut end in this way. Unfortunately they've never officially released a full-on live version of the song, but there's lots of good Youtube clips...check them out.

Great clip. Ricky Lawson plays the groove like the album (i.e. like Jeff). Tony Spinner nails it vocally. Still, the first time I heard that ending I was blown away. For another take from a show in 'Den Bosch Holland' around '93, sans the orchestra, a different singer (whose name escapes me), and Simon on drums.

Byron ruins that song for me, at least on the album. Luke performed this song live during the Luke Tour '97', with just him singing and playing the keys. It's one of his best vocal performances.

That's John James on lead vocals. Certainly a different vocal tone than Tony Spinner or Joseph Williams, but I think he did a great job with the leads he sang while he toured with the band.

Jenny Douglas-McRae and Donna McDaniel are the female background vocalists.

In no particular order....

Only the Children - 3:21 to the outro.

Isolation- 2:49-3:05

Till the End - 2:45 (after Joe shouts)

Yeah...the outro of "Only The Children" should have been WAY longer...a shame they never released it on any of their live albums. I saw them play it once in '05 and it was killer live.
