for me its easy toto wouldn't be toto without luke..he is as they say the man..his heart n soul and his trusty axe always ring true for me..all the singers can sing..and YES byron could 2 but he wasn't a pro , had problems hitting the correct notes and pitch and couldn't rock to save his life!!

bobby is the legend and can still blow me away with that voice!!
joseph is my favorite ..he could do it all like bobby but he had that ..something that I can't really say everytime I heard his voice (and still to this day) on a toto cd or otherwise, makes me think that noone else could, would or should sing that particular song..he blended sooo well with dave and luke and I'd just shit if I saw him live with the guys one more time and on a new song or 2 on the new record!!!

Bobby, then Luke, then Paich. I liked Joe Williams too. Couldn't stand the other guys.

Well, I think they are all great! Yes even Byron was good, at least studiowise. I don't know too much how he was live.

I'll try to illustrate this in percentages (100% of course max...):

Fergie: 100%
Bobby: 99%
Joe: 99%
Luke: 95%
Paich: 94%
Byron: 85%

But still... I like them all!

Cheers!

Easy one this.

Fergie is my choice, love his vocals to death. On of my alltime favourite singers on Toto's best record.

Joseph follows, then Luke, Bobby, David and last Byron.

If you read the interview with Lukather at the link below, you'll realise that Fergie turned out to be a complete dick that couldn't hack it!!

After being sacked, he went out on the road with his own band billing himself as TOTO singing Roasana, Hold The Line...etc, songs that he had fuck all to do with in the first place!! As you can imagine, the boys from Toto were a little ticked off!!!!!

Check out the full interview here, its one hell of a riveting read.....

Just for the record, my fave Toto vocalist was Joseph Williams with Bobby Kimbal a VERY close second!

Paul UK...
Was that answer to me? I have read the interview but can't I have my opinion anyway? I still like Fergie the most and Isolation is for me Toto's best record, can't I have that opinion?

You can't get much better vocally than Bobby Kimball. i think fergie was great for the band and i even enjoyed joseph williams time with the band, but Bobb's voice blew them all away. Joseph and fergie couldn't even get through most of bobby's songs on tour.

No, it was an answer to the thread really not to anyone personally!

I'd go for Kimball, for authenticity, followed by Joseph Williams......Byron acted and looked like a fag, and from what I have read, brought an 'I'm the star here' attitude with him.

Actually, I really kinda like the way that Fergie sounded on Isolation..
I'm not going to go as far as to say that he's my favorite, but he might be the best vocalist the group has had.

Then I would say it's a tie between Lukather & David.. Lukather can really hit the emotion in a sad one, plus he's good on some harder stuff, too, like "Don't Chain My Heart".. Paich just has a unique sound, it's too bad they didn't use him more, he might not have the best range, but he was good on "Stranger In Town", "Hydra" and of course "Africa"..

Then I would say Kimball.. He's a fine vocalist, can do some great high notes, but he just doesn't grab me the same way. I think he did sound pretty cool on "Girl Goodbye".

Joseph Williams, great singer, shame he smoked all that dope and messed his voice up back then. Have a good Toto concert cd of him with the band. His solo and Vertigo cds are good, takes you back to his Toto days. The classic line up is good too. 4 is awesome, as well as JW cds with them. Group fell apart after Greatest Hits cd. Mindfields was a good attempt at making a come back.-ERIC

Probably this is the only question that Im unable to answer in my whole life.

Luke is toto, fergie is the driven force in my fave album isolation, joseph is my favourite singer and... DAMN! Africa is on the radio now (honest!) and check out these back vocals by Kimball, the original throat of Toto.
I bought solo Cds of all the guys and Bobby's voice still remains in top form.

Who's Your Guy...And Why

Postby jimmy19029 » Sat Dec 17, 2005 1:22 pm

I liked Fergie the best on record and he sounds pretty good on the live bootlegs I've heard. Great range, unique voice. I was sorry it didn't work out for him with them.
Luke is referring to Fergie's touring with the World Classic Rockers(ex- members of big name groups like the Eagles, Steppenwolf, etc.) where he sings some of the big Toto hits(but nothing at all from Isolation) and is called the former lead singer of Toto. True, he is A former lead singer of Toto and did sing may of them in concert with the band but I agree with Luke that it's sort of a misrepresentation. Most people...and PROMOTERS...probably don't realize ALL the true facts and probably just assume, "Well, I have the guy from Toto here, why do I need the actual band? Probably one of the reasons I don't get to see them play near me more.
Next on my list would be Joe. GREAT VOICE and really seemed to fit in until he didn't take care of himself and got ill and forced cancelation of some of the '88 tour dates. He's TOTALLY professional now and has lost those bad habits from his younger days.
But, really, I'm glad Bobby's back and he kicks some major ass live with them.
