The 1970s soft-rock band Styx release their new album, Brave New World, Tuesday (June 29), according to their label, CMC Records. It is the first album by the surviving original members, including guitarist Tommy Shaw, since









1983's Kilroy Was Here. The band became famous in the 1970s and early 1980s for the top-10 hits "Babe," "The Best of Times," "Lady," "Come Sail Away," "Too Much Time on My Hands" and "Mr. Roboto."

Well, compared to today's standards...yes, they are. So is Journey. Heck, even Motley Crue is soft by today's standards. That is why there are no real radio outlets for these bands. They do not fit today's rock format, and new material does not get played on Classic Rock formats...

Styx could cover both soft and hard rock, and I'd bet some would say they still can. One of the reasons I liked them was because they were able to cross over into different types of music and do so well.

I think if a band/artist wants to limit themselves to just one type of music it's fine of course, but I'd rather (for me only) they do a broad spectrum.

I think most people, who really don't Styx think that Styx is soft rock. Good friend of mine was riding with me one day, and I had a Styx cd in. He did not know the songs (Blue Collar man, GI, SMB, Light Up), or didn't know Styx sang them. But when Best of Times, Babe, TMTOMH, DLE, came on he knew they were Styx songs. I think radio back in the day tended to play the slower stuff, so no die hard fans didn't know the faster songs were Styx.-ERIC

Eric, I think you are right about this. I do not think a lot of people are aware of many of the rocking songs Styx did, despite their popularity at the time.

I love playing the old WN rocking out songs for some relatives and friends of mine who have the "soft rock" view of Styx. They are amazed.

I'm talking past and present. All of these artists have had something new out in the last two or three years. Corporate America from Boston, 'Peacekeeper' was a great song from Fleetwood Mac. We played stuff off Cyclorama as well as the covers. Peter Frampton had an album out called Now with a great song called 'Verge of a Thing" Bad Company had The Merchants of Cool cd/dvd out with a song called Joe Fabulous about two (three?) years ago which we still play a LOT. That song had really good feedback and I think did pretty good in chart placement. Van Halen released a double greatest hits cd last year to support their tour with three new GREAT songs on it. We played that new tune from Motley Crue too for a short(very short) while.

My feeling is that once you stick a tag on Styx, it falls right off. There is just too much variety from that group to pin any single label on them.

It is what makes them so unique. And what brings such a variety of fans to their fold.

You are totally right.
BUT,if you only listened to AM radio and Babe was fodder of the month and you did not know any better.You would not know of the variety of Styx.Therefore Styx was/is soft as shite.
