Perhaps Sidney Freedman could answer these questions.

Yogi,

Didn't your cd have the songs listed on it? Didn't You look at the press release information? All the complaining you do is on stuff that has been known forever. Have to have some reason to buy the dvd - including songs that aren't on the cd is one of them.

And this isn't new. Japanese cd's/lp's almost always have had additional songs on them for as long as I can remember. It's not STyx that you should blame, it is the music companies. They control this stuff for the market they are trying to reach.

Bullshi t,

The original Amazon.com track listing for my $22.99 CD had the Cyclomedley on it. My orginal order went in about 6 or 7 weeks ago.

Two weeks before the U.S. $9.99 release came out they changed the track listing. Both track listings are the same.

I blame Styx, Fronteirs & espically Amazon. The track listing that I placed my order based upon was listed as the Styx tracks for over a month.

It's Fuc ing consumer freud ,or is it Sigmund Freud.

Anyway, you know what I mean.

At any rate I just made my last Amazon purchase.

This was the original Frontiers track listing
1. Blue Collar Man
2. Lorelei
3. One With Everything
4. It Don't Make Sense (You Can't Make Peace)
5. Can't Find My Way Home
6. I Am The Walrus
7. Just Be
8. Everything All The Time
9. Crystal Ball
10. Miss America
11. Criminal Mind
12. Too Much Time On My Hands
13. Boat On The River
14. I Don't Need No Doctor
15. The Styx CYO Medley: Put Me On / Mademoiselle / Heavy Metal Poisoning / Midnight Ride / Sing For The Day / Shooz / Queen Of Spades / Great White Hope / Half Penny Two Penny / Borrowed Time / Rockin' The Paradise / Lights / Man In The Wilderness
16. Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)
17. Renegade

Now, I wouldn't blame Amazon if Frontiers changed it at the last minute.

Does it have anything to do that they can't use DeYoung songs - hence no Lorelei and no Medley given that Queen of Spades, BT, and Rockin The Paradise are all part of the medley?

Rajah.. when they did the medley at the CYO show, they did not include the DDY penned tunes in it.. They did a "special" one for it.

I personally don't understand why they can not have DDY songs but it can have Beatles songs. Can someone explain that one to me?

I can explain it perfectly.

If they play the DDY songs, Styx gets ripped by alot of diehards because they say Gowan butchers Dennis's songs. These diehards believe that 'only' Dennis should be allowed to sing these Styx classics.

Personally I think Gowan does a very good job.

If Styx then decides to leave out the Dennis led songs, they also get ripped by the same diehards who now say that Styx is trying to erase the memory of the man that brought the group most of their fame and fortune.

In a nut shell, Whatever the current band does is wrong.

I'll try this again for those who didn't read it before.

You can do any song in any format with permission of the publisher of the song.

If you differentiate from the written arangement of a song, you need THE SONGWRITER'S PERMISSION to use your revision. So for them to put bits and pieces of songs in - they'd need to have permission to present those snippets in ways the author did not originally intend.

If they wanted to put together a medley of Beatles songs, they'd have the same problem. Walrus is being presented in it's entirety - or more likely - the Beatles gave them permission as they typically do to bands covering their music.

It's not hard to understand that Dennis said "no you cannot use songs I wrote in a way I did not intend for them to be use".

This doesn't have sh t to do with what the band does or doesn't want to do. The facts are - they can't record and release a symphonic version of Dennis' music without Dennis permitting it. That is the beginning and the end of the conversation.

Looking at that list - Queen of Spades, Borrowed Time, and Rockin the Paradise are credited to Dennis at least partially. So there ya go.

Ash,

I believe you are wrong about Styx using Dennis credited songs. They used Dennis's songs, and either Gowan or JY sung them on the CD's Arch Allies & Styxworld. The songs Grand Illusion, Rockin The Paradise, Lady, Lorelei, & Come Sail Away were sung on these CD's. Gowan sang lead on all but Lorelei.

The medley may be subject to something different because it is short clips of songs. But, if current Styx wanted to put Lady, The Grand Illusion, Come Sail Away, The Best Of Times, Suite Madame Blue or any other songs on their current One With Everything release I am pretty sure they could have.

I remember I read one time(around 2000) that Styx wanted to release a new live version of the song 'Edge Of The Century'. It had Roboto sandwiched in it somewhere so they could not release the version that they wanted

They just chose to leave the Dennis tunes off.

Yes - because they play Dennis' songs as per the original arrangement - meaning just the 5 piece band. Notice how there is no video of this? Because it violates publishing law. Adding the symphony changes the arrangement - just as adding a video component to it. They can record Desert Moon on a live album if they want - provided they change no music, arrangement or Lyrics - but if they wanted to take that and put it on a DVD or add a symphony to it - then they need Dennis' permission.

That said, I'm sure they'd have no interest in that anyway since Dennis sucks right? :)

It's the same reason Dennis couldn't film Lorelei for his dvd. Business as usual for this band.

Did Styx then break copyright laws while recording Arch Allies???

Chuck was present for the Arch Allies filming and recording. This means the band had 6 members not 5.

I noticed Lorelie was still on the list. Is it on the list because Jy co-wrote the song.

Yogi.. No Styx didn't break any copyright infringements when doing Arch Allies.

They were allowed by Dennis to do The Grand Illusion on the Audio only.

As for Lady, they recorded on both because of the loophole in the RCA/Wooden Nickel contract, since they owned the rights to it, not Dennis.

When they did the Medley for the CYO show, you will notice there were no "Dennis Only songs" in the medley.. no Pieces of Eight or Light Up. They couldn't use those.

If they are co-written, I believe all parties can perform it.

Lorelei is on his Soundstage DVD. It is the only co-written song on the DVD, though.

There is one that isn't...and it is for the reason that Ash stated. I would look it up, however...I am packing to get ready to move. Honestly thanks for the clarification.

Slave driver!!!

I am quite sure there was something that couldn't be used (though originally filmed) when Dennis did Soundstage for the reasons already outlined.

Such is business.

And back to packing once again.
