DDY album question

Postby rajah2165 » Tue Jun 26, 2007 1:23 am

Question to those of you that have the album...

Are there any subtle or not so subtle messages to JY/Tommy within the lyrics? Given that it has been a major issue within DDY's life, I would think those would come out in some way.

Hopefully, it can be done a little more eloquently than say...Do Things My way, Killing The Thing You Love, Borgeosis Pig, etc.

One could speculate some of the lyrics address the Styx situation but it's just that - speculation. We'll never fully know unless we get DDY to talk.

IMO, Yes (but what do I know). In an interview he indicated his firing from Styx, deaths in the family, etc all contributed to these songs.

This Time Next Year
Respect Me
Crossing the Rubicon
Forgiveness

IMO the above songs may have some meaning. Its hard to tell. This Time Next Year has some lines which are obvious but others not as much. Respect Me and Forgiveness, if they are about Styx, would be Dennis admitting to mistakes (and would be a third person singing about Dennis). Of course, Respect Me is literally about a failed marriage but there is enough in there to have multiple meanings. Interestingly, if I had not read Sterling's book (which gave me insight into some of the stuff going on with the band) I am not sure I would have had the same view point on the meaning of these songs.

Dennis has made no secret of the fact that when he wrote from his own life, experiences and feelings, and that those songs were usually his best material.

One could interpret a lot of personal meanings to several of the songs on this new CD, but, like much of his best writing, there are larger themes one can apply as well, or simply hear in the song things that have happened in one's own life. That is why something like "This Time Next Year" can have many layers of meaning, personal to Dennis, and a sort of apply-to-your-life aspect to it as well.

I have always felt this was his greatest strength as a songwriter.

This music keeps opening itself up more and more every time I listen to the CD.

I have not got my cd as of yet from dennisdeyoung.com, so would you say that the songs towards his old friends and bandmates are done in a nice way or is he taking Jy's route, but in song??

My take only. I feel he is very introspective and is looking at his role in, well, everything. Not just Styx. I detect no animosity or ugliness in any way on this CD. (OK, well, except towards pop culture and the digital age :P )

My opinion only on this, mind you. Others may have a different take, needless to say.

I think the ass of the horse that looks like JY's face on the cover of the CD is a pretty good slam.

I actually have a weird question pertaining to this. At the beginning of "Crossing The Rubicon", DDY whispers something. To me and another DDY fan, it sounds like "Styx". But are we imagining things? I thought it might be "test", but what a strange thing to say .... Anyone?

I could be wrong but I think this is a subtle reference From this Time Next Year:

does he see your face
does he wonder why he put
someone in your place.

Jesus.. Killing The Thing That You Love was written in the early 90's WAY BEFORE Glen rejoined Styx.. No Lyric changes, etc. It was not written about Dennis, towards Dennis, etc.

The others yes, but Glen's tune is not.
