STYX concert review

Postby AndrewCP » Wed Jul 25, 2007 8:09 pm

I've been reading the first for a while but after seeing STYX last night I felt it was time to come out and post.

I haven't exactly read glowing reviews of STYX on their current tour from this site so I didn't expect much but last night's show was the best I've seen them. They played 5-mins less than Def Leppard and really rocked hard. Setlist was much longer than posted on here and included Walrus, Crystal Ball, Loreli, and Everything All the Time. They came on at 7:40 and played till 9 o'clock. Most of the crowd, both in the seats AND the lawn, was on their feet and really enjoyed the band. People around me, including some pretty big DL fans were saying things like "wow, Def Leppard is going to have a hard time following that", "I didn't expect these guys to be this good", "I'll have to make sure to see them next time they come around", someone even commented on Larry: "The new singer is really good and fun." The band was tight, seemed to be having a lot of fun, and plowed through the set. If it wasn't for the big set behind them you would have thought they were the headliners with the treatment the crowd was giving them.

I don't know if I went and saw the same STYX everyone on here has been talking about.

I don't understand how people on here are saying the band is on the downfall for being the opening act. Funny, they played longer and more rockin' songs than when I saw them open on the Classic Rock Main Event tour a few years back!

I went into the show thinking this wouldn't be the best STYX show that I seen and it would be simply a bonus to the DL show but wow, STYX stole the show. I know I'll most likely get ripped apart on here for enjoying the show but you know what? I can't deny that STYX knows how to rock and did a mighty fine job of it. Oh, and they can really give the crowd a good time.

I saw them this year with Foreigner at Mud Island. It was not their best show, but it was still good. Tommy seemed to be having a bad night. But I think they still have some life to them, if only they could put that on a cd of new songs-ERIC

I think the problem many people have is when they play with DL and Foreigner at one concert or where they play other triple bills. At those concerts, all indications are that their set list is approx. 50 mins. You only end up seeing a small greatest hits package and nothing else. The problem for Styx fans who are not fans of the other bands is that it is not worth the money to buy a ticket to see Styx play greatest hits and act as a warm up to other bands. I presume the 80 min set is much better, but is it worth the money if you don't want to see DL?

Because they are an entertaining live band, people want more from them than simply warm up act material.

They sounded just fine at our show. But our set was a bit shorter than yours. Glad you got to see them play longer.

Thanks for that info! I sure hope that we get to see a long set like that when they play here in Edmonton Oct. 1st.

Styx is not at their best when they're forced to do a 50 minute show. Not many bands are. You leave die hards disappointed with not even one deep cut, and casual fans, unless you have such a stellar performance, are generally not knocked out of the park because they want to hear the main act (in this case, DL). Also factor in bands have good nights, bad nights, and stellar nights on the road.

The DDY-less Styx isn't a bad live act. I've seen them plenty of times.

Too true. I feel I caught them at mud Island, not on a good night, but it was a bad night either. Last time I can remember (right now) I saw band that didnt do as good as the usually do was REO in 82 on Good Trouble tour-ERIC
