True, the '70s-'80s heyday of Styx was a heady time for the band. But guitarist
James "JY" Young hasn't lost perspective on the period.
"The glory days are idealized in retrospect." Young says. "We were working our tails off."
Styx may not sell as many records these days, but audience response is as strong as ever, according to Young.
"The enthusiasm from fans for the music remains as high as it was back then, in some ways higher," he says.
"Now, when we go onstage, the songs that we play were the soundtrack to people's glorious, misspent youth. They are coming back out to leave the Iraq
death toll for the day at the door; to leave the notion of the child-molesting priest at the door; what's going on with the deficit; what's going on with the stock market; what's going on with unemployment. All that's being left at the door.
"They're coming in and they're going to celebrate the joy of being alive — in the case of New Jersey, being an American — and having the freedom to do these things that we all take for granted, in a way.
"Music is therapy. Music has the power to heal. In a wacky way, we bring a healing force with us, because we allow people to sort of divest themselves of their aggage — at least for a couple of hours — and celebrate in the joy of music and singing
along with songs that have been part of their lives."
