Shaw and DeYoung solo stuff.

Whose solo career didja enjoy the most from? Tommy Shaw or Dennis DeYoung?

I loved all of Dennis' solo albums and didn't have a problem with any song. But Tommy's was great to with the exception of What If.

I liked Deset Moon and Girls With Guns about equally as well. As far as the rest of Dennis' stuff...his Broadway tunes and some of Hunchback I have liked but not really anything else. He is best at those types of songs. I really liked Tommy's Ambition and some of 7 Deadly but not What If. I have already stopped listening to 100 Years From Now if that tells you how I really feel about Dennis' latest effort. I gave it whirl, just didn't find anything lasting for me.

As a contrast to Groteful, I find "100 Years" to be more of a "Styx" product than Cyclorama. That doesn't mean that I don't like Cyclorama - for the most part, I do. It just felt more like an amalgam of songs by two original members of Styx' classic lineup and some "guest" appearances by the likes of Lawrence Gowan and Glenn Burtnik. It felt more like a temporary "project" than a work by a cohesive "group." Having odd "guest" appearances by Billy Bob Thornton, Tenacious D, and John Waite only add to this notion.

Songs like "100 Years From Now," "Save Me," "Crossing the Rubicon," "Forgiveness" and "Turn Off CNN" sound more like Styx-related product to me than anything Styx has done since 1981. Other tunes, perhaps not so much.

As far as what I listen to from 100 Years - I actually DON'T listen much to Forgiveness or "CNN." "This Time Next Year" - didn't like it at all at first...but it's one of those "catchy/upbeat" songs that solo-Dennis has been doing for years that is simply catchier than they usually are. 100 Years, Save Me, Rain (which doesn't really sound that much like Styx or Solo Dennis to me) and Rubicon are the additional tunes that "stick" for me.

With that said, where I DO agree with Groteful is the fact that having JY, Tommy and Dennis together would have undoubtedly led to some subtle...and perhaps not so subtle...changes to some of these songs. Arrangements, instrumentaion, backing vocals, etc.

It's all in ones view of what Styx you are speaking of. Does it remind me of the Styx I loved from 1975-1978? Hell no, not even close. Those years were group creations and they created some great songs. After this was basically Dennis produced Styx ,especially Cornerstone, KWH and Edge, for which I don't care much for. I could see someone comparing 100 Years to some of that Styx but it was not great STYX to me.

While Dennis DID drive the direction of that record, if I'm not mistaken, he and Tommy DID collaborate on a couple of tunes - Lights, Borrowed Time.

Do I think 100 Years stacks up as a whole to Equinox, Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion and Pieces Of Eight? No - not even close. IMHO, the guys could all get back together, sing kumbuya (spelling), write a bunch of stuff....good stuff mind you...and not approach their glory days - the days when so much of their fan base (myself included) got into Styx.

When I've attended Styx shows...and even a DDY show...many in the crowd became Styx fans due to that era. I was actually initially turned on to Styx by a cousin of mine who got into them back in the Styx I days. She has all the Wooden Nickel albums in their original cover(s).

The only solo stuff I've heard from DDY is Desert Moon and I liked most of it. As far as Tommy, a few songs from GWG and What If, very little from Ambition, and most of 7DZ.
