Styx Album/Cd Artwork

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Sun Mar 28, 2004 11:43 pm

As I was looking for something else, I came upon a 1981 interview with JY. Here's the question and answer regarding the artwork on re-released Styx albums. I thought this was interesting.

(See ChicagoStyx, this isn't all about Dennis  )

N.R.N. — On your early RCA/Wooden Nickel albums, why did the label re-release them with those horrible, multi-colored, abstract jackets? The original cover art on all of those LPs were beautifully done.

J.Y. — "I really haven't the faintest idea. As far as those are concerned, and the Best Of Styx which was released by them also, the group had no say so in the matter at all. Maybe they figured by changing the graphics they would get Styx fans who already had the early albums to buy the new ones because they were different. Maybe they just wanted to save money on packaging and keep the overall cost to a minimum. Either way, we weren't too happy about it!"

I think this is goes for the new Anthology Cd too, that the band didn't any say for the songs released. I'm still looking into this. But, I know FOR SURE and I have the interview on tape, that Tommy and JY personally picked out the songs on "Rockers".

I wonder which genius approved the Brave New World cover ? I know Dennis has washed his hands of that one in an interview.

The only cover that sucked worse than Brave New World is the Cyclorama cover.

The cover for BNW was originally what became the cover for While There's Still Time if I'm not mistaken. The band changed the artwork without discussing it with Dennis.

The cover for Anthology is very similar (same concept) as my avatar. Mine was done in 1999.

I heard somewhere that Chuck was the one who worked on the cover for Brave New World.

I don't care if Van Gogh worked on that cover... it still sucked.
Grand Illusion was a cool cover. So was Po8.

Going with the discussion...my favorites (cd/album artwork) would be :

The Grand Illusion
Paradise Theater
Pieces of Eight
Man of Miracles
Cornerstone

a tie for the worst covers would have to be Brave New World and Cyclorama...while Cyclo may be very "Floyd" it's just a really really bad cover IMHO. :)

Bonus points to Dennis for Desert Moon. Terrific cover.

I like the cover for Girls With Guns, too. One half bonus point to TS.

It's nice we all have our own opinions :D

Let's see, these are my top 5 Styx album covers:

1. The Grand Illusion
2. Paradise Theater (love the history of the theater)
3. Cornerstone (now that I know what the cover means-LOL)
4. Crystal Ball
5. Styx (I)

DeeJaySTYX says:

That was a FUNNY comment, they might use that one :D

For those that do not know the meaning behind the Cornerstone album. Here is an interesting article from the old "16" magazine:

Yogi, you can write to them and tell them what you really think - LOL

Box set, eh. Hmmmm.... a big salad .... floating in space above the heads of old rockers, sitting in wheelchairs.
I like the concept.

Chuck was very ill during the time that the "Brave New World" came out. I think he was more hands on with The Classic "Grand Illusion" art work.

Well then, who was responsible for "Brave New World"?

Disclaimer:  I've been a fan since "Lady" but, admit I am not Internet Savvy. (which probably includes 80% of Styx fans)
So, I don't know all the details.

Top 5:

1. Grand Illusion
2. Paradise Theatre
3. Cornerstone
4. Equinox
5. Kilroy Was Here

Worst for me of the A&M years has to be Edge of the Century. BNW stinks, Cyclorama was fine..not my favorite but alright. Kilroy just stood out even though what was inside was not what I had hoped for. Man of Miracles my fav Wooden Nickel cover with Styx II being least fav.

I remember when I first saw "Kilroy Was Here". My sister bought it before I could and showed me, and I said, "what the hell is this?" She said I had to read the inside first and, HEY!, I just got done with school and they expected me to read?! Cyclorama cover sucks. WTF? A Carrot?! Makes no sense at all...

I'm late to the party on this but,

1. Equinox
2. Pieces of Eight (it promped me to write a paper about those stone things in high school)
3. Cornerstone
4. Brave New World (in the minority here, but I like that one)
5. Best of Styx/Wooden Nickel version (my newest acquisition just purchased today for $1.00, the silver hand is positively evil, I think I only need Man of Miracles to have all of the original wooden nickel records)
:D
