I am flashing back today while I wait for the Super Bowl.
Hockey is such a graceful, artistic sport that will always be my first love. Still I just can't get enough of football. I am a football fanatic. I have such fond memories and so many great photos.
One of my favorite memories is of the New England Patriots and quarterback Steve Grogan. It was 1978 or 1979 I was sent to cover the Patriots and Houston Oiler playoff game. I arrived on a Thursday, and New Englands coach at the time,(Fairbanks, I think) had booked the same hotel I was staying in. This was their first ever home playoff game, and he wanted his crew away from the distractions of home. Well they overbooked the hotel and because of this I was going to lose my room. so there I am sitting in the hotel lobby when Steve Grogran walks in singing to himself at top volume Come Sail Away. Have you ever heard someone who cant sing at all trying to sing Dennis DeYoung? I was laughing so hard that Steve comes up to me and strikes up a conversation. We did talk music, and even Styx music briefly. If I remember correctly he was a big fan of The Grand Illusion album, but an even bigger overall fan of Foreigner, Journey and Van Halen. Steve actually found me a room in that hotel, and we talked off and on for the next year or so. It was a shame they got beat so bad that weekend.
Go Pats. 19 -0 sounds good to me.
