Dennis being inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame?

He's got some credentials:
- 7 top 10 written singles with Styx
- A few big time rock tracks written (SMB, TGI, RTP)
- 1 top 10 written single as a solo artist
- Hunchback of Notre Dame winning the Jefferson Award
- Songs written for the New 101 Dalmatians Musical

Is this enough?

He has been submitted numerous times for this. It is doubtful he will be inducted.

He has a lot of good stuff to his credit, but I agree with Sadie. Not gonna happen.

This is far more likely than the Hall of Crap, but still very doubtful. Styx can't even catch a break on the Rock Walk, where the far-less-successful Kansas is included. I know there's been some very organized efforts to get Styx included, so far to no avail. It's to the point where it's just comical to me. I sat there recently and wasted two hours of my life watching a documentary of the Ramones called 'End of the Century', and at the end of it I shook my head and thought, 'THAT incredibly shitty band is in the Hall, but not Yes/Tull/Genesis/Journey/Rush/Kiss/Iron Maiden/Styx and many, many others? WTF?' It's as if rock criticism and rock honors exist in an alternate universe from what people actually like. Bizarre. The documentary presented it from the standpoint of "surprisingly, this band, despite its critical success, struggled to make a living. Why?" Gee,maybe it's because real-life people mostly hate this terrible band and don't want to spend their hard-earned money to acquire its awful music. I dunno, I'm just guessing, LOL.

Sorry, kinda got off on a rant there! I hope all is well.

Just this week, Styx was passed over yet again for the Hollywood Walk of Fame, although Journey, who are certainly a comparable band, got in several years ago.

sigh...

Well, opinions always vary from one person to another, which is only to be expected. But the thing is, Kiss is actually famous and people have actually consistently decided to spend their money on that band for more than thirty years now. As far as I'm concerned, that's the only real success there is. Everything else is a bunch of self-congratulation. Critical success is, in most cases, a consolation prize for people who lost in the real-life marketplace. Mark my words: if any of the members of the Ramones or the Clash had the chance to trade bank accounts with any of the members of Kiss, at the expense of sacrificing the critical respect they've had, they would do it in a nanosecond. Who wouldn't?

Why do you think this is? Is there anything political in this, as with the Hall of Fame? Is there somebody involved with the Hollywood Walk of Fame who actively has an axe to grind with one of Styx' members, or is this just because they see the band in such a negative light? You know, I can see the HOF not happening because Styx truly didn't "invent" anything, but the Rock Walk? That just baffles me to the point where I have to wonder if there's not something self-inflicted in the scenario. Hmmmm . . .

I hope all is well.

I agree with both of you to a degree. I wouldn't say Kiss sucks, but I certainly don't think they are as great as so many think. But like Sterling pointed out, there are ALOT of people who do think that. Not only are they wildly successful, but have managed to keep those fans long enough that the children of the original Kiss Army members are now members themselves.

I have NEVER gotten the Clash fandom. Every so often Rolling Stone or somebody will post a 'Top 100 Artist of all time' poll which will get kicked around on this message board. And when that happens,I ask if ANYBODY is a Clash fan? Crickets ensue.

I think so, anything that Yawn Weener touches even remotely. Its the same with all such awards, how does a movie like My Dinner with Andre get nominated for anything. How does a movie like Star Wars not win picture of the year. How does Toto, Eric Clapton and the Doobies get millions of grammies for what they even acknowledge is not their best work. This is all more liberal baby boomer types that know better than you and I running the show. "We" know you liked/watched/read/listened to all that growing up, but here is what you should have been liking/watching/reading/listening to.

The Walk Of Fame isn't a walk of talent.... it's a Walk Of Fame. And I dare say that KISS is infinitely more famous than Styx. I know this will be a shocker.

Now I'm a HUGE Kansas fan but I would admit that Kansas hasn't had as much success as Styx and that Styx belongs on the walk. But being on the walk of fame (or in the hall of fame for that matter) is a matter of fame, not talent. Most people couldn't name one guy in Styx. Most people know everyone in Kiss.

You do, in a sense. (And I am too lazy to look it up now. We did on here a good while back.) You have to be nominated by someone and then approved by a committee, I want to say LA Chamber of Congress?, or some such. Once you have approval, then YOU or a sponsor pays every cent to get the star placed on the walk of fame. Of course, for many wealthy Hollywood types, this is not a problem.

I agree about the Walk of Fame being about fame, but the Hall of Fame has many acts most people never heard of. That's the joke of it all, in my view. Some of the people in there are people I'VE barely heard of, and I write about the music business for a living, LOL. It's absurd. You know what, that does it . . . I hereby nominate myself for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! LOL. Vote for me . . . oh that's right, you CAN'T vote . . . sorry.

on the point of the Hall of Fame, I came across this while looking for something on the Monkees on the web.

In June 2007, Tork complained to the New York Post that Jann Wenner had blackballed the Monkees from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Tork asserted:

“ [Wenne] doesn't care what the rules are and just operates how he sees fit. It is an abuse of power. I don't know whether the Monkees belong in the Hall of Fame, but it's pretty clear that we're not in there because of a personal whim. Jann seems to have taken it harder than everyone else, and now, 40 years later, everybody says, 'What's the big deal? Everybody else does it.'[does not play their own instruments] Nobody cares now except him. He feels his moral judgment in 1967 and 1968 is supposed to serve in 2007.

Never knew Wenner was such a likeable person....*lol*
