Styx should hire this guy as producer

Postby Mr JY Roboto » Thu Oct 08, 2009 11:55 am

i think Styx should hire Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush, Stone Sour, Trivium, Shadows Fall, Death Angel) to produce a new record. This guy pushed and brought out the best on the last Rush record Snakes & Arrows and now has done the same with Alice In Chains. Current Styx needs a kick in the ass and this guy could push them.

Derek Sutton was just in Milwaukee during Summerfest. I talked to him for quite a while, GREAT guy. I sure learned a lot more about Styx, Spinal Tap & the music industry ;) He's currently managing Robin Trower.

If I can figure out how to transfer an audio tape onto my computer and then somehow share it, I will post it. My friend had permission to tape our conversation, long story.

Derek really IS a good guy. Some find him intimidating because he is so smart and direct, but he's perfectly friendly. Talking to him is like a history lesson in Classic Rock 101, LOL.

As for Styx working with an outside producer, I would like to see that, too, but I don't know if certain of the band members are capable of seeing themselves clearly enough to admit the need to do that, to put it diplomatically. There tends to be the attitude of, "Hey, we're Styx, we've always produced ourselves and it's worked out well for us." I don't see it happening but I agree that's one of the things that's needed. A little bit of outside vision wouldn't hurt to get them out of their box.

Robin Trower was performing on one of the rock stages at Summerfest, Derek Sutton is his manager.

(I was on a filming the band Bad Boy & Loverboy on another stage and then had to head over to Robin Trower's stage. I met Derek at Robin's performance.)

They didn't necessarily produce themselves....Dennis produced them...and without him in that chair, the records have not been strong. Tommy and JY's strength lie in other areas besides production.

Even if Dennis was back in Styx I would want an outside producer.

Before we even get to an outside producer, these guys need to be motivated to write a new record!

I don't think Foreigner is doing as well with their Walmart release. I do like their album though.

Foreigner is not doing as well as Kiss, but still doing incredibly well for a band that consists of only one member from what fans would call the classic lineup. Especially when you consider that Lou Gramm is not there. I can't believe they pulled that one off. Can't say I dig what I've heard much, though. Sounds like B-sides to an 80s Foreigner record to me. That's just my opinion!

Yeah, it's not a great album. Very smooth, very adult contemporary, not a lot of balls or guitar to the record. "In Pieces" is a great song though. Hansen's vocals are great too, just no good material to shine on. Disappointing, but oh well.
