These guys remind me of Styx

Postby Classicrockr » Sat Dec 12, 2009 10:48 am

I think I may have have mentioned this in another forum about 1year ago. This band, IMO, is fantastic. They remind me of Styx - great keyboards, Vocals really compliment each other like DDY & TS do. Has anybody got their album? They have about 3 songs on this link & I'd like some opinions on the entire CD. They just recently got a major award at the LA music awards.. If you haven't heard of them, listen to the songs & see what you think...

Ya I bought their album and they are a very solid band. Their debut album has a story and a concept, just like Styx, and the lyrics are so well written that they fit well in the context of the story, and stand well on their own.

If you don't want spoilers of the story, skip this paragraph;
The basic story is that aliens are threatening to take over the world if humanity will not renounce it's destructive ways and join them peacefully. A group of humans and aliens have formed a group called the Lighters, and they represent unity and understanding. The main story follows a scientist who at first works for the most powerful and corrupt leader of planet earth, and then becomes a Lighter himself. Another prominent character is Kate, who is also working for the leader, but of course falls in love with the scientist, and follows him in leading a revolution. You maybe wondering, "Okay, how do the songs stand on their own?" All I can say is that they can, and they do it pretty well!

Okay, spoilers over, on to the actual songs themselves. Very good progressive rock throughout, with some bits of metal throw in["Sky is Falling", "Survival", "Can't Go Back"]. The songs can go from soft to heavy, but it never feels unnatural. The melodies are very good, and every song has been stuck in my head at least once, so it's pretty catchy. There is one lead singer [the biggest difference from Styx], but he can hold your attention very well. He conveys the tone that the song is trying to express, and he has a good range. If compared to Styx members, I'd say he's most like Dennis [whether thats a plus or minus for ya]. The lyrics can be weak in a few instances, but they are generally very strong ["Wrong" and "Wasted Years II: Sleepwalking"] and even compelling ["Lighters", "You're Not the One"]. The one thing I consider a minor downside is that most of the album is dark. "Lighters" is the most joyful of the songs on there, though there is an instrumental piece that is very relaxing and joyful. The lyrical and musical content is usually dark in some way, but if you don't mind that it is still great stuff to listen to.

I've been keeping an eye on these guys and they are definitely going places. Will they be like Styx and take a few albums? Or will they just be instant hits? I think somewhere in between. They are currently looking for a record label and have started their second album. As I live close to where they are based, I hope to see them live soon. :D

Best Songs;
-Lighters
-Wrong
-All 3 parts to Wasted Years
-You're Not the One
-Sky is Falling
-Last Song
