Supertramp - Hodgson Bans Ex-Bandmate From Singing His Songs

Former SUPERTRAMP frontman ROGER HODGSON has asked former bandmate RICK DAVIES not to perform any of the songs he wrote when he tours this summer using the band's name.

Hodgson, who quit Supertramp in 1983, was furious when Davies announced plans to perform a 40th anniversary tour this year, without inviting him to take part.

And he's now trying to block Davies from using any of the songs Hodgson - the band's chief songwriter - penned during his time in the group.

Hodgson says, "I expect Rick to honor the agreement he and I made that the band would not play my songs.

"Since the current Supertramp is a vehicle for Rick’s music, which is very different from my style and songs, it’s important for Supertramp to stay true to Rick’s style and songs and avoid doing covers of my songs. Rick and I both knew that doing that would help create a clear delineation between Supertramp and Roger Hodgson when we agreed to part ways."

Unless there is some written agreement between the two, this won't fly at all. As long as a venue has paid it's ACSAP/BMI fees, a performer can cover any song he wants. Now, if he wants to put out a DVD of the show, that's different. I'm pretty sure that Video releases or Video broadcasts do need explicit permission from the publisher/songwriters, unlike audio.

Seems to be a recurring theme between bands that have broken up then one member wants to tour.

It's a shame they can't completely reunite, be really cool to see Supertramp show in this day and age. Probably draw a pretty good ticket sales too.

If they are using a picture of him on the promotion, I smell trouble. It doesn't matter if there is a disclaimer with the photo, they're still going to get nailed for doing it.

A little off topic but I love how LRB original founding members Birtles , Shorrock and Goble introduce themselves at shows.
