Who is the next to leave

Postby Keiferb » Sat Jan 15, 2011 8:55 am

Simple question. Useless and hypothetical of course. My vote - TS.

That's right, in 2012, the band will consist of JY, Gowan, Ricky, Todd, and a You-Tube ID'd TS sound-alike replacement from Venezuela. JY will proclaim it the best ever version of the band.

Of course I don't really believe that. Just a mundane thought. I couldn't come up with anything more intelligent tonight.

Interesting thought. In my opinion if TS were to leave and JY would be the only long time member left, I doubt anyone would take the band seriously anymore. What would be the point? I could see JY trying to carry the torch since he has a distorted view of how much of his contributions put Styx on the map. Can you just imagine a version of Styx with just JY left playing more of his contributions? God, please no at that point I would wish I was deaf. :D

I'd say if anyone were to leave it would be the other TS. I don't know if Dream Theater announced their new drummer yet :)

I would agree with this. Todd may enjoy Styx, but out of all of them except maybe Ricky who has been a successful sideman/session guy for quite awhile, but he definitely doesn't need them anymore. I bet he could step out of Styx and have his choice of jobs.

if ricky leaves.....no big deal....to me truly just a hired hand.

if gowan left....would possibly open the door for the final get together for the big three......but i think styx is steady work for gowan and they have been allowing him to dabble in his solo work on the side so i am sure that is keeping him somewhat satisfied....if he ever got a decent offer to re-establish his solo career i think he would in a second.

i also agree that todd is probably the most in demand and ready to step into another job member they have.....whether it be session work or stepping into a high profile gig he could have it if he wanted it....but being with them 15+ years seems to indicate that he obviously likes the music and enjoys the company and they must be paying him pretty well to have kept him this long.......but i could see him being ready to do something different at some point.

tommy would also be one that in my opinion would probably go re-establish his solo career and do his own thing if he could make the same kind of money and stay busy as he does with styx....for him and JY it has to be getting old doing miss america and renegade for the 10,000th time.

jy aint going nowhere as we all know.....i think if tommy were to ever leave it would be interesting to see what jy would do.....not sure if he would still want to play or would embrace retirement.....surely jy has managed his money well enough to be able to retire comfortably....but who knows. but i cant imagine he would actually call the band styx but stranger things have happened.

In my opinion I don't think JY would give it a second thought about not still calling the band Styx if Tommy were to leave. That's the guy's problem. He thinks the whole Styx name revolves around him.

Even though Todd is a very good drummer, having played with STYX does not help his marketability.

Tommy Shaw has even commented that being part of STYX has created a stigma when performing with other musicians.

Let's face it...what they do is schlock.

But it sure is fun!

i dont think that being a part of styx has helped todd's marketability right now in 2011 per se....the music.....but videos of his drumming and the name he has created as a drummer for essentially a 70's rock act has been amazing......plus with todd winning the "greatest drummer in the world" thingy with modern drummer magazing a year or two ago pretty much soldifies that the drumming community knows who he is regardless of the general public......and that's why I believe his name would be mentioned as a possible repalcement with nearly any high profile opening.

that's interesting and you may be right....here's the thing I'm sure these boys are thinking......styx is a business....JY has been there since the beginning and tommy was there during some of the business's best days. and then JY and tommy and dennis were all there during their triumphant return to paradise tour which according to interviews was one of the best money makers they ever had.

jy and tommy have managed to keep the business running and moderatly successful since 1999 without the core band and one of it's most important members. i think it is safe to say that gowan and todd have both played more gigs as a a styx member than dennis has even played and certainly more than john and maybe even chuck did. so from their point of view and probably from tommy and jy's point of view the business has carried on and these "new" non classic lineup members have been around along time now......so you may be right....jy might be willing to still call it styx especially if todd or gowan stayed on board.

the kicker would be if he tried to call it styx if they were all gone and he basically formed a new band.....that would be wild.

I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to build the band back up from scratch if he was to become the "last man standing".

If Tommy left, JY would just call up Glen Burtnik and then declare it "the even better greatest version of Styx ever!"

Interesting that a topic I started, which in reality, wasn't intended to be serious (OK, I was just being plain stupid), actually revealed some interesting thoughts on this topic. In reality, it's all conjecture, and probably not worthy of the brain cells expended. Consider this my apology.

Maybe Glen should kick my ass.

Smart decision. If I was him I wouldn't want to come back to this version either.
