Bryan Adams, Def Lep, Foreigner, Journey, Heart, Kansas...

I just got my Journey/Foreigner/Night Ranger tickets, with my Def Leppard/Heart tickets already on order and I thought there are about 10 bands from my youth that tour constantly and each year just seem to pick a different touring partner. I won't say yet who's opened for whom, I thought I'd throw it out to the board to rank the 'pecking order' of 10 bands/artists to see who people percieved as more popular. In alphabetical order:

Bryan Adams
Cheap Trick
Def Leppard
Foreigner
Heart
Journey
Kansas
Poison
Rush
Styx

There's only 1 band on that list that hasn't been involved in the 'summer package' so it would be interesting to see where they rank. Bands like Boston and Yes don't tour enough to be on the list, but add them in if you want an even dozen.

You forgot REO Speedwagon, they are out every year and are part of the package tours as well.

I've tried for a couple of years to go see Bryan Adams and his shows are ALWAYS in large venues and ALWAYS sold out. He doesn't tour that much tho. Perhaps there is a lesson in there.

Rush
Bryan Adams
Cheap Trick
Heart
Foreigner
Styx
Kansas
REO
Journey
Def Leppard
Poison

This is how I would rank them for me. Rush first because they always put on a stellar show and seldom if ever have an opening act. BA, Cheap Trick, Heart and Foreigner next because they just don't play Nashville very often. Styx, Kansas and REO just because they are fun bands that seldom disappoint but stop here at lease once a year. Journey just have not done anything for me since Perry left, I saw them with Ageri (sp?) and they were good but kinda boring to watch and honestly came off a bit egotistical. Def Leppard just because even though I like some of their stuff I just don't care that much and from everything I have heard lately Joe Elliot's voice is shot. Poison - eh.

I was willing to make a weekend out of Atlanta for Bryan Adams, but the show was sold out by the time I found out about it. Rush is playing here in April and I'm not going. I've seen them once and while I like some of their music, I'm not as passionate about them as I am some other bands. Here is a list of who I am seeing this summer so far:

Stryper
Avenged Sevenfold with Bullet for my Valentine
Tom Jones
Tommy Shaw at the Opry
Cirque du Soleil

This may be the summer of decent music in Nashville. Usually one really good concert summer every couple of years.

These are some of the concerts that I've seen recently (last 3-4 years). I know that in some cases, the order changed from date to date so I'm going to give the order of the shows THAT I SAW. A pecking order does become somewhat clear. The opening band first, second band (if one) and closing act.

Cheap Trick / Heart / Journey

Styx / Foreigner / Def Leppard

Kansas / Styx / Foreigner

Foreigner / Bryan Adams

Journey / Def Leppard

Cheap Trick / Poison / Def Leppard

Night Ranger / Foreigner / Journey* Upcoming

Heart / Def Leppard* Upcoming

Def Leppard always closed. Journey closed every time, but with Def Leppard. Foreigner was after Styx both times. Kansas and Reo Speedwagon opened for Styx. Styx opened for Boston and Yes. Foreigner opened for Bryan Adams. Based on this, I've figured a rough pecking order for tours.

1. Def Leppard
2. Journey
3. Bryan Adams
4-7 a mix of Poison, Boston, Foreigner and Yes
8. Styx
9. Heart
10. Kansas
11. Reo Speedwagon
12. Cheap Trick
13. Night Ranger

The band that is hard to figure is Rush. The past few tours (to my knowledge) have been 'an evening with Rush.' If I had to guess, they'd be ahead of Bryan Adams, but behind Journey.

This makes me wonder if the pecking order would be different in the case of Styx if Dennis was still in the band.

It would have to be. I simply can't believe that Styx was on before Foreigner. They have only one singer instead of 3 and it's not even the original. At least Styx has 2. I realize TS is not really original, but most would consider him that. Styx before Boston is ridiculous too. Now the reason they don't have their original singer is obviously different and tragic. It's sad that Brad Delp is no longer with us because he was a great singer IMO and was 1/2 of the Boston sound. But they use like 3 different singers... some girl, Michael Sweet of Stryper and some bloated youtube Delp sound-alike. They could at least get Fran Cosmo back and only use him. Point is that I don't think Styx should be on before them. BUT, if DDY was back with Styx... they would be the headliner plain and simple. Or at least co-headlining.

Styx, even as they are assembled now, should not be an opening act.

They have 2 choices...

Play smaller venues alone. This would allow them to play deeper cuts and more new material.

Play sheds with 2 lesser artist like they did with 38 Special and Reo. This cuts into their time and gives the openers about an hour and a half between them.

Some bands I think would work well with them....

Asia-All original members back and 2 new albums of material to play.
The Cars-Back together (minus Orr) and a new album on the way. A different style of music, but a lot of crossover fans.
Heart
Cheap Trick
Doobie Brothers
Chicago...They may have to open for them...
