T.O. DREAM THEATER

Postby yogi » Fri Oct 04, 2013 4:45 am

Their 12TH studio album just debuted on Billboard's top 200 albums @ #7. That means since 1990 they have had at least 2 albums chart each decade in the top 20. The 90's, 2000's and 2010. Pretty impressive, no VERY VERY impressive. Whats even more impressive is their lastest release and their POWERFUL video The Enemy Inside. Its a must see and deals with PTSD.

GREAT job again Dream Theater!!

They continue to get better every time out.

The Enemy Inside Video is an ABSOLUTE must see. I thought Show Me The Way was a great video this video is about as powerful as any I have ever seen.

What an F...... INCREDIBLE band!!!!! Maybe the 5, 6 counting Portnoy musicians that have EVER played together in the same band. Its UNREAL how GREAT their music is.

Can I ask.....who or what is Dream Theater? I have seen them mentioned a lot in these threads but I have never heard of them.

Since about 2008 or 09 I feel they are the GREATEST rock band ever.
They are classified as progressive metal. I would call them melodic progressive metal. Their songs are usually extremely long and complex, perfectly written with great lyrics and sung to perfection. Often their songs are dark yet extremely uplifting.

Go online and listen to the YouTube fan video for their song Ministry of Lost Souls. This is my favorite Dream Theater song.

Last year they were FINALLY nominated for a Grammy for their song 'On The Backs Of Angels off their INCREDIBLE album ' A Dramatic Turn Of Events'. A Dramatic Turn Of Events is the first album I would reccommend. Back in 1992 they had their only top 40 hit 'Pull Me Under' off the album Images and Words another UNREAL album. Albums I would reccommend in order are:

1. A Dramatic Turn Of Events
2. Octavarium
3. Images and Words
4, Dream Theater - their brand new self titled CD
5. Systematic Choas

You cant go wrong with ANY of these - I love every one of their releases - They also have some GREAT GREAT concept albums: Metropolis & Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance -

** Most of their albums and songs take a few listens to grow on you

to me "scenes from a memory" is their best work and then these last two albums would follow as 2 and 3. they are incredible.

I love Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Awake. I actually love all their material, but those two are probably my favorites. I've heard only two songs off the new album so far. Sounds like they released another winner. Unfortunately I have never been to a headlining Dream Theater concert, but I saw them open for Iron Maiden in 2010 (one of their last dates with Mike Portnoy) and they were a fantastic live band. I do want to catch them again.

To get a little off topic, how many of you here have heard of Seventh Wonder? I've always compared them to Dream Theater. Except they can write good hooks and catchy choruses while still being masters of progressive virtuosity. They're masters at writing concept albums and the singer has hands down one of the best voices in music. My friends who like Dream Theater are all glad that I introduced them to Seventh Wonder.

For straight prog, their album The Great Escape is the best choice. But for a true musical experience, check out Mercy Falls. It's hands down one of the best concept albums ever written. Super diverse, emotional, and powerful with incredible songwriting and musicianship.

The story of Mercy Falls

"It's really important if you're going to remain a valid band that you play your new stuff. Otherwise you become a parody of what you started out doing." - Janick Gers of Iron Maiden
