What is the real meaning of the words "No Band Is An Island" that appears on the back cover of the album Equinox? Has someone already read somewhere some explanation about it?

Yogi - instead of being an asshole with the Poth name, maybe read a little closer. There is a question mark at the end if my statement which generally implies that I am guessing.

Dennis quoted that in the liner notes of one of his solo albums, along with "not without coconuts!"
"So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause."

It is based on the phrase "No MAN is an island"

No Man Is an Island is an expression emphasizing a person's connections to his or her surroundings. It can also refer to:

A famous line from "Meditation XVII," by the English poet John Donne.
A book by the Trappist monk Thomas Merton.
No Man Is an Island (Hallmark), a 1953 episode of the Hallmark Hall of Fame about the life of John Donne.
No Man Is an Island (film), a 1962 film based on the experiences of George Ray Tweed, an American sailor on Guam.

Seems like a possible message to Dennis to me. If he thought he was driving the boat and the others didn't agree, it could be them saying "hey, it's not just you here".
Regarding his using the phrase later, that could mean "I'm driving the boat- because nobody else can".

judging by how things turned out and what the other band members said about Dennis' controlling nature, it seems to fit.

could be wrong...
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

From what I had read during the Equinox- start of A&M era everyone was on board but JC.
Dennis was the leader because 'Lady 'had hit but JY, Chuck & John were all with DDY as they were striving to make it huge. JC was just unhappy and wanted out.

Equinox will ALWAYS be my favorite rock album of all time. Just an ABSOLUTE masterpiece in EVERY sense of the word.

IMHO, 5 songs are great (LU, Lorelei, SMB, BFA, MR) - 2 have never grown on me. I just don't find much in Mother Dear and Lonely Child feels like they were trying to go after a Lady II, but a weaker version of it.

I too agree.

Mother Dear is a very progressive song which is average at best. I dont skip it but I dont care for it that much either.

Lonely Child has GREAT GREAT vocals from Dennis but its a weak song. I dont skip it but its weak.

Side 2 of that album I can honestly say is the only side of an album that I have ever worn out from continous play.

Best side 2 EVER!!

Pieces of Eight is a VERY VERY close second. Grand Illusion also has one EXCELLENT Side 2!

As much as I like Dennis, QoS is not one of my favorite songs from him, so it disqualifies Side 2 for me as a perfect album side. It is counteracted by the title track which is one of my favorite DDY songs. I like Aku Aku, but as far as an insanely strong Styx song? No. It's a nice coda, though.

GI is a better Side 2 than Po8, and so is CB with Shooz/This Old Man/Clair De Lune/Ballerina.

Personally, I don't think CB gets the attention it deserves. I tend to play that album more then some other Styx albums.

Probably get slammed for this but I think Kilroy side 2 is awesome (and for those of you who say I only root for DDY, he does not have a song on side 2 beyond DLIE reprise). Think Tommy has his best vocal performance on his two songs than on any other album. JY's songs are a sharp and welcome change from what we are used to with him, especially Double Life. Artistically a great side of an album.

I agree. The whole Equinox album is awesome. I almost wish they would of done a Equinox/Grand Illusion show. Side two of Kilroy is good too. Very under rated.

I'm with Boomer on Crystal Ball.
Only album I play in full, along with Wooden Nickle albums.
Only got some of the Styx other songs on my I-Pod, that I only hear if they come up on shuffle.

I too also love Kilroy Side 2.

Side 1 is the side of Kilroy I could not stomach at the time. Side 2 is excellent. Love both of Tommy's songs and JY's are good and the Dont Let It End reprise blows the actual Dont Let It End out of the water.

Re: Equinox

Postby masque » Tue Jan 28, 2014 4:17 am

here are my thoughts on some of what has been said;

1) I am only guessing on what the phrase meant but possibly it could be a statement to A & M......styx was likely very happy to be going from WN to A & M and thought that they would be getting lots of support, so therefore, "no band is an island" could possibly mean that they felt like they were "in it together" with A & M now.

2) side 2 of Kilroy is extremely underrated, I agree with Toph....it's fantastic and really the best part of that album. as for the other side 2's........man there is some stiff competition there but I would have to go with POE, then CB and then GI.

3) i have felt for years that CB was one of the most underrated styx albums of the entire catalog.....it is probably logged as much play time if not the most play time from me out of their entire catalog.......I love every song on the album but one and I like Jennifer OK but it is the weakest song on there.....but put me on, mademoiselle and crystal ball is pure styx magic followed closely by shooz, ballerina and this old man......fantastic album!

4) equinox finds itself in different states of love from me......there are times when I will burn it up for several days in a row and then there are times I may go months without listening to it at all.....it's got some great tunes on it......but i think "lonely child" and "mother dear" are the two weakest on the album but "mother dear" is actually the one i like much better. it's probably my second favorite JC song behind "the serpent is rising".
