Best Side One

Postby Toph » Wed Jan 29, 2014 12:19 am

"Side one, cut one listen to the songs"

Ah yes, side 1, typically the side that the band wants to make its biggest impact. Start off strong!
So what is your favorite STYX side 1.

IMO, the two that rise above all have to be GI and PT

GI - although it contains weakest track on album in Superstars, they song is still shortest among the Giants which are tracks on GI. Title track, FY, and CSA are about as strong a trio of Styx as there is.

PT - featuring another big trio of RTP,TMTOMH, BOT, as well as album track NEGAP and AD 1928 intro, about as cohesive as an album side can be. Awesome tunes.

Honorable mention - Equinox, Edge, and Cornerstone

Glad to see Edge is getting some love! Too often overlooked, but a great first side that is for sure. Arguably went downhill after "All In A Day's Work," although "Not Dead Yet" is fun and "Back To Chicago" is well...very Chicago like...

Totally forgot about Styx II - was thinking just the A&Ms but that would go into the honorable mention category for me, probably replacing Equinox Side 1 (side 2 of Equinox is the side that I would play if I could only choose one side.).

Back when I did E-Bay I found a Styx CD ( 2 on 1) that had Equinox and Edge Of The Century on it. It was a legit remastered CD.

Early that summer after that purchase I met Suite Madame Blue( Laurie) in Wisconsin for a DDY concert. She introduced me to Dennis and Glenwho was in the band atthe time. Got to visit with the entire band during the sound check and after the show.

After the concert, Glen autographed that CD for me. He said he had never seen it before. Ive kept it mint. DDY autographed my cell phone that night also.

Combine Edge side 1 with Equinox Side 2 and what an album that is.

I would have to say my favorite side 1 is Paradise Theatre but it just is of complete without Side 2. I also enjoy all the songs on side 1 of Kilroy (recently played my vinyl version). Same with Side 1 of Man Of Miracles. Not a bad one there either and Golden Lark is prob my favorite Wooden Nickel tune.

It's tough. Equinox is great, Crystall Ball is, obviously Grand Illusion is. Pieces of Eight loses out because of Lords of the Ring. Equinox I guess loses out because of Mother Dear. So between CB and GI, I'd have to give the slight edge to Grand Illusion.

Are you like Tommy and JY and believe that Styx ends in 1978?

wow.....tough one......i would say GI because as toph mentioned the trio of GI, FY and CSA is near styx perfection......BUT, I also love superstars so i dont really consider it a weak song.

with that said, my second place would be CB but Jennifer keeps it from giving GI a real run for the money.

Third would be PT....once again a "super trio" of RTP, TMTOMH, BOT is hard to beat but I give the edge to the two albums mentioned above.

Close call between Styx II ,Serpent,Equinox and CB.
II by an edge due to 'A Day'.

I love that album.

Also I like "The Serpent Is Rising" especially because it includes 2 of my favourite songs: "Young Man" and 'The Serpent Is Rising"... usually considered the worst Styx album for almost everyone (including members of the band), but I like it...

As side 2, to me , will be always Equinox...killer... "Midnight Ride" (best JY song and my favourite live tune), "Born For Adventure"(awesome bass line), Prelude 12" and "Suite Madame Blue" (no comments!! killer).

IMO of course...

My winner is GI. All four songs are great, and I LOVE Superstars. The vocals are outstanding!
The only problem with side 1 of Grand Illusion is that side 2 of Grand Illusion is even BETTER!!!

Not at all, I just prefer that era. I enjoy Edge, but it doesn't sound like a Styx album to me. I think Brave New World is better. Dennis' songs I think are better.

I kinda forgot about how good side one of PT is... with the exception of Nothing Ever Goes As Planned, it's perfect. Kinda the reason though I stick with GI because it's weakest song is Superstars, but I still really like that song... a lot. I won't even listen to Nothing Ever Goes As Planned.
