Adam Agrees With Froy!

Adam for once agrees with Froy! But then again, is “anyone” actually all that interested in ANYTHING by Styx, Dennis DeYoung, etc. Truth is, it’s almost 2005, and guys who none of us listen to are dominating record sales. (How many Usher albums are in YOUR collection?)

To paraphrase someone on this board, “Why are we all so happy with such an unsucsessful band?“

I have been thinking about this all day
You may have a point Dennis / Styx may never recover from what has happened
It would take to much energy and luck to regain what once was.
Only U2 has been able to keep it going no other act has done what they have done . The Styx/ Dennis game may be over forever/

Don't you see that the same would be true if Dennis stayed in the band or not, or if Perry had stayed in Journey or not? It would be like some popular band from the 50's reuniting and regaining their popularity in 1980. It just doesn't happen. The culture has changed. Popular music has changed.

We're older and a bit out of touch with "pop" culture. Get used to it...What was popular 20+yrs ago simply is not going to come back to life today and have the same level of popularity.

Styx, Journey and some other bands, have been living off of a bit of nostalgia from a generation who has grown up...and a new album here and there for their core fans. They can pay the bills by doing that...but, they will never - ever - have the same popularity as they did at their peak...no matter who is in the band, or not in the band. 16yr old kids are not going to rush out and buy CDs by these bands...as they did 20yrs ago.

Apologies to Andrew. I'll do my best to remain calm on your account - you are respected!

BTW, Aerosmith is currently all original members. Why doesn’t this make them okay with who I’ll call “certain people”?

Monker says: “Styx, Journey and some other bands, have been living off of a bit of nostalgia from a generation who has grown up...and a new album here and there for their core fans. Adam Says: Monker speaks a truth so obvious it seems ridiculous to even have to be said. With or without DeYoung, Styx would not – COULD NOT – remain as popular as they were in the late 70s.

Classic, to cure your out-of-touch symptoms, I suggest going out and impulsively buying the new Bowling For Soup CD. The witty lyrics and catchy guitar riffs alone make it worthwhile. There IS some decent music out there, but it's hard to find it amongst all the generic crap that gets airplay (much like the hair band syndrome in the 80s).

If you ever seriously talk to young people you will be surprised how much they do know about classic rock, the early days of MTV, etc. I think its just not cool for them to talk about it amongst themselves. Just like when we were in school, if you talked about the Bealtes or anybody from the prior generation.

Every generation has "music" that it identifies with. Even in the hey day of classic rock there were pop groups that dominated the charts for one reason or another that weren't in step with the times or the main stream. For the most part, our parents disliked our music and as it turns out many of us are parents now that dislike the music of our kids.

I have aways felt that we follow for the rest of our lives the music that surrounded our high school years and our rock gods are our rock gods and we will follow them and their music. But even we listened to some of the music of our parents although we would rarely admit it: Beatles, Hendrix, Led Zep, etc.

I am 38 now and I can say that these points still remain true. MY son is 13, he has a group of music from today that he listens to that I could care less about. But fortunately, he has listened to many of the bands I have playing in the house and has a really great appreciation of the music of my era. To the point that I can bring him to many of the concerts I go to. Something I know is probably coming to an end.

There is good music out there, but you have to search for it. Bowling for Soup (at least this album) seems to be influenced by classic rock, I would also say No Doubt, Maroon 5, and maybe even Simple Plan would fit in there today. Classic rock influences seem to be making a slight comeback into main stream but you have to look for it.

We should be happy that core constituencies that we identify with are still making music and aren't one hit or one album wonders.

I work a couple of days up at our local high school - LOL. When I'm playing my Styx cd's quite a few kids know the songs and who's singing them. I was surprised to know that several of them saw Styx this past summer a few times (since Styx comes to my area at least 7 times a year - LOL. I see a lot of Pink Floyd and AC/DC t-shirts worn. A couple of the kids in the neighborhood play in a band, they play all "classic songs" from the 80's.

My son is learning to play the guitar, he's working out of the few Styx guitar books that I have. All of my kids listen to Dennis' music and Styx and some Accept (LOL). They also have their own cd's, Maroon 5, Hilary Duff and Train (and all the Disney music cd's).

I'd like to get the Bowling for Soup cd. Good choice :)

It's intersting to learn the approximate ages of the posters here.....( I'm 41 if anyone cares....) most of us fall into the 35-45 age group, which is to be expected I guess....

When I next get to the the CD store, I'll look into the "Bowling for soup" CD.... And just cus Yogi is so passionate about it, I'll order the Burtnik Welcome to Hollywood CD, to see if it really is the best release in nearly 30 years !

By the way, Dad was right when he said I would eventually cut my hair short too ! Pretty smart guy he turned out to be !
