Here We Sit

Postby styxfanNH » Wed Jan 12, 2005 10:10 am

Here we sit, trashing things or praising how good a cd is before it is released as if we were review writers for Rolling Stone Magazine.

We've kinda spent the better part of 8 pages beating up on the others point of view and this cd that has yet to be released.

It isn't an accident that Styx is releasing a covers cd. It is actually a fairly popular trend for bands to cover bands other songs in either a single song or full album.

We sit here saying that today's music is trash. But when a band covers songs from their past, they are exposing their fans to the music of the past - hopefully bringing that era of music to the younger fans that may never have heard it. I guess that in the larger scheme of things it may even make some buy the originals to see how they compare.

Here we sit, some wishing for the demise of what was there favorite band and others waiting for the break that may return that same band to prominence.

Here we sit, typing into a computer try to change minds that we all know won't change.

Here we sit, forgetting that the music that we say brings happiness to our heart is really pulling that heart apart.

And Here we sit, fooling ourselves that the band we fell in love with will ever be at the top of the pop charts, in an era when the music doesn't matter, nor does the quality of the lyric, or the talent.

At the end of the classic movie, "Casablanca", Rick (Bogart) says to Ilsa (Bergman) : "We'll always have Paris." A lesson lies therein. We WILL always have this great music from a band we all really love.

I feel that many of us argue the present while embracing the past. I know many of us long for that past, but it will never be like that again.

However --- we will always have the music.

I enjoy listening to this music, this GOOD music, made by my favorite band a LONG time ago, and let it entertain me yet today. It still brings a smile to my face and a good feeling in my heart when I crank it up and let it color my day.

Here I Sit, reading all of the various opinions about Styx.......Past, Present, and Future.....learning something occasionally about the Band that has brought me countless hours of entertainment, and enjoying the banter. Not taking any of it too seriously. Making ( on some level ) friends that I'll likely never meet, but enjoy engaging in "conversation"
about something we have in common.

This place is intersting, fun, enjoyable. Nothing said here will change what will happen with any member of Styx, what music they will release, who will be friendly with who, etc......but it IS fun to talk about.

Pieces post on this thread nailed it ! This place is a diversion from serious stuff like war and tsunamis......
