I know that there is a seemingly endless supply of 'Dennis' -vs- 'well, everyone else' type of threads started here, but this is one I will attempt to write from an unbiased angle. Last night while eating Calif. cheese and drinking Heineken I realized that enough time had passed to estimate the impact of those two commercials.
We have had the good fortune of having not only one styx song in a superbowl commercial, but with the Heineken ad we now have them in back to back years. Not too shabby considering both songs are over 25 years old now. The question I pose is which commercial won? In other words, which advertiser got the most bang (or is that big bang theory ?) for their marketing buck.
On one hand you have 'Lady' which uses cows to sell California Cheese. On the other you have 'Renegade" featuring Brad Pitt selling Heineken. Given just that and assuming a common release date, which would you guess would last longer?
The 'Renegade' ad was shown only once to my knowledge and not even in all markets from the talk that went around here shortly after the superbowl. I have to admit that I fell asleep after Sir Paul finished his set, so I cannot confirm that the ad was shown here in Charlotte. I did see it on the internet the following week, but that was the one and only time I ever saw it.
The 'Lady" ad was debuted over a year ago. I have seen it several times since, with the most recent viewing happening just a couple of days ago. I cannot speak for any other markets and would like to know how many showings of each have occurred in other cities. But for Charlotte I can say it looks like another Dennis penned tune has won the popularity contest.
Don't take this as a Tommy slam, I have nothing against him or the newbies in Neo-Styx. Typically my ire is saved for the reluctant one. Nor should you take this as an indictment of the music, I did say popularity contest. Besides with Dennis playing Kermitfest, any port in the storm will do.
