Without looking to start anything here, I can honestly say that at every concert where he has included Hunchback material, those songs are the ones that get standing o's. It also stands to reason that if he's looking to carve his own identity, he'd need to include them.

All that being said, it appears he is shifting away from orchestra shows, (or at least starting to). Hunchback material is better served with the orchestra. Should he make the switch I'd look for the material to disappear.

Peace

While I would like to see a change in his shows myself, remember, he is doing a lot of these orchestra shows in conjunction with PBS fundraisers and part of the deal is the DVD. His orchestra show pretty much reflects what is on the DVD. I am sure that is part of the plan.

My guess is he will change things up down the road.

Personally, I think his Lost Treasures is a something die-hard fans would much prefer, but he is appealing to a much broader audience with the orchestra shows, no question.
So while we all want "Queen of Spades," there are those in attendance who probably really enjoy the beauty of "With Every Heartbeat"

It would be nice if many artists would throw in the occasional "die-hard only" show, but I don't suppose that would be very feasible. It would probably just create more headaches for the promoters and performers.

On a somewhat related note, I think Bruce Springsteen does the best job of any classic artist of keeping his setlists fresh (and die-hard friendly). Then again, he can afford to given his fan base.

DDY in melbourne Florida

Postby Leesa » Tue Apr 19, 2005 5:57 pm

Hey all-
I have to say seeing DDY was really great for me, he put on a great show, some of his jokes were funny some were lame (re: im an asshole...just like you sir, and) the orchestra, I thought was friggen great, the guitar solo was awesome, so he must have been off the night before to get a bad review, he played it behind his head too, the drummer was behind a clear plexi glass kind of thing, can anyone enlighten me as to why they did that?
I'll agree to Dawn Marie trying to dance, although she looked cute and had a cute outfit on, she couldn't decide if she was playing the guitar or the keys lol, looked like she was using her arms for balance at times lol, It was cool when Dennis brought out Suzanne and sang to her, although she seems quite shy and didn't add much to it. However she made an anouncement on the mic and did fine there.
Come Sail Away (my fav styx song) brought the entire place to their feet,
Castle Walls fantastic, and Lady and Babe were great too. Suite Madam Blue was strong and also sounded great, I just don't tire of those songs.
When the orchestra started playing "*****" lol sry forgot the name of the piece but I'll post it later when I remember,(see this is what turning 40 does to you lol) Dennis played around dancing funky for a few seconds,It was funny, he is quite animated and played up to the audience and they loved him. He sang "acapela" (sorry bout the spelling there)and there wasn't a peep in the place, he really sounded great, what a friggen voice, anyway
John Waite opened for him and said to the crowd...hello...you alriiiight" lol it reminded me of my visit in England and the fact the D couldn't come over for this show. so my daughter was my date, and my sister wouldn't move over so we could sit together lol as the man in front of the seat she'd have to move to was taller than the other one (by a friggen 1/4 inch if that geez)thats the only thing I can complain about at the show. His son does the lighting for the show, really great movement of the lighting to some of the music, really cool.
If I think of anythign else I'll post more..
Hope all is well with everyone.

Hey, Leesa. Sounds like you had a blast and glad you did. Sounds like everyone onstage was having fun too.

Sorry D could not make it.

Thanks for posting your review as well.

What if you went to a DDY concert and the Hunchback broke out instead??

The drummer is behind glass so he can strip and not get arrested!!!!

Some Drummers play behind the plexi wall as to not be so overbearing to the other musicians. Especially in tight situations as Dennis tends to play in.
