I totally agree with the list except:

Rush, New World man and REO's Keep the Fire Burnin' were cool tunes.

You could have had Can't Fight this Feelin" instead.

Open Arms deserves to be on there..Horrible piece of crap.

Dennis DeYoung proved he had been a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He masqueraded as a rock star throughout the 1970’s but with “Mr. Roboto” DeYoung proved he wanted to be a Broadway star all along. This song single-handedly destroyed the original line up of the band. He forced his band mates to humiliate themselves by acting onstage. DeYoung was convinced that “Mr. Roboto” would put him in the same light at Pete Townshend. Instead of seeing his dream reach the heights of classic rock operas like Tommy, “Mr. Roboto” became the butt of a lifetime of jokes. DeYoung still defends “Roboto.” He told this writer, “"Mr. Roboto" is now a vernacular of our culture. You can’t go anywhere without someone saying, Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto. I can’t even being to tell you how many television shows and movies that line has been in. From The Simpson’s to Howard Stern to King of Queens to Austin Powers to Adam Sandler’s Eight Crazy Nights to the Volkswagen commercial to Dodge ball, it is everywhere you look.” Hello? The funny thing is, this guy (Jeb Wright) interviewed DDY before writing this article and was schmoozing all over him. I don't think that's fair, but I think he's right when he says people ridicule the lyrics to Mr. Roboto.

Maybe DDY did want to be Pete Townshend. He certainly dressed like a vaudeville entertainer in the 80s...just look at the video for Rockin' The Paradise!

In the interview, DDY says someone had to take charge and lead the band, and the "other two guys" had a problem with that. In DDY's defense, he is right that someone should take the reins if no one else will...perhaps JY was too busy snorting coke and TS was too busy banging groupies to take the lead!

And it's true that the other guys had to have gone along with Kilroy by dressing up. DDY didn't force them to do that. I guess what it comes down to is that the "other guys" ceded too much control/authority to DDY, and when the time came to stand up to him against Kilroy it was too little, too late.

After all, PT was a concept album and did very well, so DDY thought "why not take it to the next level" which in my opinion was a big mistake. Kilroy would have been OK if it was a "loose concept" album like TGI, PO8, CS, and PT were.

I've often times wondered what would have happened if Dennis had held back on the whole "Kilroy" concept and Styx would have just issued a regular album in '83 or '84. It's interesting to think about because Dennis' songwriting was going in more of a pop direction than ever, almost bubblegum("Music Time"). I guess I wonder if the group would have been able to maintain the same level of success, even if "Kilroy" wouldn't have been a factor. The thing is, for the '80s, I don't think this music was bad, infact it was probably better than average, but for Styx music, it was such a departure. If the whole "Kilroy" thing hadn't happened, how would fans have responded to an album that had "Music Time" and "Don't Let It End" as the primary singles? Would solo efforts like Tommy's "Girls With Guns" and Dennis' "Don't Wait For Heroes" have been more successful if they would have had the Styx name behind them?

"Music Time" is absolutely horrible and the album likely would have been a complete flop if that were the lead single.

At least "Mr. Roboto" is a great song, even though it gets panned by most, and the album sold well.

KILROY WAS HERE is an excellent album on the whole... not the best Styx album but certainly better than anything they've done since.

I love it.

I said it once and I'll say it again, these songs on this list did not kill classic (arena) rock...Soft music and ballads have been around just as long if not longer than Classic Arena Rock as we know it....I believe it was Monker who said it was MTV and music videos that cause the decline of Classic Rock's popularity which is a good point...

Thats because the original lineup of the band was on drugs at the time
YES Roboto was out there but to this day it stands as a classic STYX tune
It actually killed the band 2 times once in 84 and then when the commercial came out and there was a money issue over it.

MTV has pretty much ruined part of the music business. It started out great watching the bands on tv and they were getting so much more exposure than just having their songs played on the radio. It was brilliant!!

Then what happened? What happened to the videos being seen on tv? They had to get rid of them and add all those crappy shows. VH1 doesn't even play that much music videos anymore, very, very sad.

I'm so happy to have VH1 Classic now, then I can go back in time, again.

There's nothing wrong with "Mr. Roboto", it's a very catchy tune!! I have to admit at first I was like "what the hell happened to Styx", but then the song grew and grew on me!! My kids play it over and over and over!!! It's a great song!!!

Unfortunately it grows like a fungus. Hear it once and its in your mind all day.

I guess, in a sense, some of these classic bands did die because of these songs, but it wasn't "the songs" that killed any of them, but the fact that the members couldn't sort out their differences over the new directions, and God knows what else.. I honestly believe that if some of these bands had not taken such extended breaks, they would have lasted a lot longer..

Let's see, Styx vanished in '84; not to be heard from again, until '90-'91; and after scoring another smash single, they vanish for another five or so years; and they don't put out another album of completely new material, until the end of the '90s(and we all know what the strain between the members at the time did to this album..)

In Journey's case, they took ten years off and ended up having a fairly successful comeback with a song that's cut from the same cloth as the kind of material that supposedly killed the band.. Again, unfortunately, circumstances from within the band prevent them from really pushing the new album in '96, or getting another album out within the next couple of years.

I realize that popular music changes over the years, but I think the real key is for bands to keep attempting to get their stuff out to the public, and maybe attempt to move with the times. The worst thing is to just fall off the map and that's what most of these bands have done, more than once.
