I saw pseudo Styx

Postby Toph » Fri Sep 23, 2011 7:09 am

Believe it or not, I went to see Styx this weekend. I did an Atlanta weekend and saw Journey, Foreigner, and Night Ranger on Friday and saw Styx on Saturday after an Atlanta Braves game. The Braves had Styx as after game entertainment and I thought - well, I can now legitimately check these guys out without having to give them 1 cent of my money.

To set the stage....The Braves announced their attendance at 46,000 plus for a Saturday game against the Mets. The stadium was packed and the Braves won the game 1-0. The 4pm game itself only took about 2 hours and 20 minutes. So, its about 6:20 and they announce that Styx will take the field in just a few minutes. So, 46,000 people could have stayed, for free, to watch Styx. The only committment needed was their time. This had been advertised on Braves games for months. It also was a quick game relatively speaking, so it wasn't like they were coming on really late. When Styx came on the field at 6:45, honest to God less than 1/5 of the stadium was full. People left in droves. This band can only get 8000 people to watch them out of 46,000 for FREE! I thought to myself, "This is truly pathetic".

The band comes out and my friend commented to me, "This is the ugliest band I've ever seen". And they are. Ricky with his eyeliner, Gowan looks like a freak with eyeliner and makeup on, Sucherman now wears eye liner and looks a bit like Lindsey Buckingham. Tommy looks like that crazy Vietnam vet who hasn't bathed in 2 weeks. I never thought I would say this, but the most normal looking one of the bunch now is JY. He actually looks presentable. The others either look like freaks or bums. My son even was freaked out by how they looked.

The setlist - Blue Collar Man, Grand Illusion, Too Much Time, Lady, Lorelei, Chuck entrance (looks 80), Foolin Yourself, Miss America, Come Sail Away, I Am The Walrus, and Renegade.

My thoughts. This unit is so different from what I remember Styx being, that it really is hard to call them by the same name. I saw Styx in 83, 91, 96, and 97. This wasn't close to resembling what I know as Styx. Unlike Froy, I will say that Gowan isn't a bad performer. He just isn't Dennis DeYoung. The spinning keyboard is fine, but its more Steve Walsh and Kansas than Styx.

How did they compare to Journey? Foreigner? and Night Ranger? Journey are better muscians hands down live. Foreigner had exactly 0 original members with them so they are a bigger joke than Styx. Night Ranger deserved more than the 35 minutes they got. Out of all the bands, they have the most originals left.

But all these bands have had their heyday - and to put one more second of my life into them is really a waste of time. I've looked on this board and see that I have over 1300 posts on this board. Wow. What could I have been doing in that time? Instead I've wasted it talking to a bunch of losers and arguing over a band that hasn't had a hit in 20 years and hasn't had a platinum album in almost 30 years. How pathetic is that? Don't get me wrong, I am as big of a loser as you all. But no more. I'm done. Done here, done with Styx, done with all of those 80s bands. Just not worth it. And done with this board.

I do owe you one more thing - I never linked to what was the top 2 Styx videos of all time in my opinion. Will do that in another posting. Then I'm done.

To you pro DDY fans - you are absolutely correct - he was the band. I now can know that my point of view was right. This band may be entertaining to a certain segment of the population without him, but they aren't Styx and don't have that mass appeal.

To you bitter, ugly current Styx fans that think the band can do know wrong - I hope you are subjected to listening to this group in this incarnation for all of eternity. It will be your heaven, I'm sure. After all JY says its the best version of the band ever...here's to listening to it for eternity....

To Styx - You don't realize how pathetic you look on stage, but you really killed a legacy in my mind. Hope the dollars were worth it.

Toph quick question for you:

Did they shoot fireworks off during the concert in between songs and the band would stop playing? I'm asking because I saw REO Speedwagon in a similar deal in Pittsburgh a couple years back and the band was never really able to get in the groove and I saw them open for Styx and Journey on the "Main Event Tour" and they were good.

Troph, Sorry that this experience has motivated you to stop sharing your thoughts and opinions here. I don't think that you or anyone here is a loser. Well, I can think of one. 8) I look at it as a group of people that are loyal fans that are not shy at sharing their opinions pro or con. It is sad that the band that you, I and many others loved is now but a faded memory. It truly is sad that the magic of their music has been killed off over multiple egos and petty bullshit. Although I do not consider Dennis and his band as Styx, I am happy that at least he is keeping the memory of what Styx truly was alive.

P.S. The thing about the eyeliner was just too funny. People have poked fun at Dennis for having Finesse as a sponsor. At least he wasn't wearing it. 8)

Pity you feel that way dude, but you are entitled to you opinion like everyone else. One comment I would pull you up on however is your statement. "To you ugly bitter current Styx fans" Im fairly new to this board and would have to say that your statement would be better aimed at the DDY camp. Most fans of the current band seem to be willing to accept change. The resentment and vitrioll seems to come in the main from those who cannot accept that DDY is no longer a member of Styx.

Fuck you masque - fuck you fuck you fuck you.

you have no concept of the crowd. I said there were about 8000 there. The stadium was about 1/5 full. You don't see the upper deck or the outfield do you in the videos? Go fuck yourself. Idiot fucks like you are why I am done.

But if you are going to call me a liar, I am going to defend myself.

You can see Keith Marks taking off 1 min into the 15thousandth version of Blue Collar Man
I don't even see 8000 there, I do see the screen shot of the crowd when the game was on that looked filled Wonder why that was edited in,
Another smoke and mirrors trick. Look at the crowd in front of the stage people are just standing there not even getting into it, And Gowan of course looks like a poor fool. Funny when Paul McCartney played Wrigley the entire place was filled 2 nights in a row. Here you have about 2000 losers in the infield,

I goes to show you that Atlanta will let anyone into their games. I want you to be done already but on the other paw I dont want 'The Poth Flame to die out'.

I am at odds with myself.

it wouldnt make a rat's ass difference to a few of you guys if styx played to 100,000 people right now......if they play to 2500 then they "have ruined the legacy" and if they play to 100,000 then "it's all because of the legacy Dennis created".....you guys are fucking hillarious.....I so enjoy reading some of these posts.....I really wish I had more time to engage in the discussions and remove your brains and toy with them....but alas I dont have the time.

and Toph in case my above post was too confusing for you to understand then try this and see if it relates better for you: fuck you, fuck you, fuck you....go fuck yourself........how's that? better for you?

as with most new things, it took me a couple of times to get used to the lineup without Dennis. Honestly, had it not been for Glen being in the band for so long, I don't know if I would have continued going. That said, once I they started to get their groove, I found I enjoyed them immensely. A few years later, I saw DDY live, and it was also good - just vastly different from where Styx had ended up. It was obvious to me that there were two strong currants pulling the band all those years, and without one to counter the other, the river flowed in 2 entirely different directions. My tastes have changed a little bit since 1999. Today, I pay more attention to Gowan and Todd than to Tommy and JY, though Tommy does sometimes blow my mind when he plays the under=rated but tricky riffs. And when he screams like the old Damn Yankees days. I haven't seen DeYoung since 2004? I'd like to check him again, but he never comes close to here.

Toph wrote:Believe it or not, I went to see Styx this weekend.

Let me just comment to a few things here. From the videos I have seen there does appear to me more than 8,000 people were left in the stadium. Maybe 12,000 as the lower infield seats are pretty full and the first few sections of the infield upper deck are decently full. The outfield is of course empty. I would not watch anybody from those seats. To be behind the band’s PA and watching their backs from that far out is pointless. Same goes for the base line seats past 1st and 3rd base. As far as getting on the field, some shows at baseball stadium do not allow anyone on the field and some it requires a special pass to get down there and they limit the number of people who have access.

Additionally, most of the people that paid for a baseball game came for the baseball game and not the show. The Braves have always drawn well and really do not need the extra push that Styx would give them. That being said they are a great organization that treats their fans well. It is expected that droves of people would leave due to other Saturday night plans, taking kids home, tired, and for the most part just not interested in seeing Styx. Baseball fans do not equal music fans. This is a win-win. The Braves add value that they probably did not need to add and Styx gets to play to a much larger crowd than if they played on their own in Atlanta.

Atlanta is an awesome music town and the current Styx on a weekend would probably only draw 4,000 people there on their own, depending on price point. Price point really makes a difference to most music fans and especially casual music fans. A good example of this is Collective Soul, coincidentally from Georgia, plays Vegas in September every year at the Hard Rock Hotel’s pool stage and the capacity is 800, with a ticket price in the $50 range and usually sell out or close to sell out the venue. This year for some reason they moved the show into “The Joint” inside the hotel. They lowered the ticket price to $28 and sold over 3,000 tickets.

As far as your opinion of the show, I get it. I am a fan of the new line up, but less now that Glen is no longer with them. This band is quite different that the DDY lead Styx and not everyone is going to make the transition. My criticism of the new lineup has to do with lack of new material, and constant touring. This is slowly lowering the value of the name, no denying that.

The fact that you are leaving the board, do whatever makes you happy. That’s all that matters. I don’t think it is pathetic to follow any band not matter how many records they sold. If you enjoy the music that is all that matters.

Now Froy, how in the hell do you compare Paul McCartney with any version of Styx? He’s freaking PAUL MCCARTNEY!!!! Secondly, those shows had nothing do with a baseball game. They were fully produced concerts that just happened to be at a baseball stadium and are not comparable either. I mean I could make up a controversy and say McCartney only sold 20,000 seats at Wrigley Field that holds more than 45,000 fans. Less than half-full, but that is not the true story they only sold 20,000 seats so the shows were sold out.

No, about 8,000 seems about right. Heck, that's probably larger than what they draw now anyways! To the OPs point, I'm not a huge fan of the new lineup either - nor am I much of a fan of DDY solo. I mainly hang around here since every now and then a "golden nugget" will appear. You know, an old video clip of a concert from 1979, an interview from 1983, or news that Glen is joining Dennis on tour.

I really couldn't care less about the comings and goings of the current band, but they're human and they need to eat. So if they can tour and make a buck while putting out a few different releases of "Regurgitation", then God bless 'em.

Also - to the OP's point about Foreigner not having any original members. I thought they still had Mick Jones? Maybe I'm wrong.

Most amusing aspect of what was reported is that he called Foreigner a joke ......they are the best live band on the circuit and blow everyone off stage they play with .....Kelly Hansen can do what Lou Gramm cannot and that is sing, sorry to say as Lou was in his prime one of the best ever.

Foreigner IS Mick Jones's band and he has to be the only member for it to be ongoing ......like Whitesnake should break up as Coverdale is the only original member .......as should Journey (Schon), hey even Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow should stop as I bet the singers are the only original members of the first band that played.
When DDY went solo in 1999 are all band members the same if not then he needs to hang up the French onion sellers black and white shirt as saying otherwise would stink of Hipopcrisy (hiphop)

I thought I would pop in here for the first time in 2 years to see what was being said and what is being said is what was being said 12 years ago ......... FOR FUCKS SAKE HE AINT COMING BACK GET OVER IT
