Unreleased Styx Songs

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Sat Mar 20, 2004 12:01 am

I found this information on the Styx Collector site. Here's a list of songs that have been recorded by Styx, but not all released. Remember, this is from another site, not personally from me :) I'll try to dig for more unreleased songs.

Styx: 1992 Demos
[No #] [CD] [PRO] [1992] [US]

1. Don't Give Up On Me +
2. It Takes Love To Make Love +
3. Nothing In Common
4. Watching The World Go By
5. Someday We'll Fly
6. Devil In Me
7. All For Love
8. Paradise +
9. ?
10. ?

* 1992 collection of demos recorded by Styx for a proposed album that was never released. This CD had an extremely limited pressing and was only sent out to record label execs.
* Styx is Dennis DeYoung (keyboards & vocals); James "JY" Young (guitars & vocals); Glen Burtnik (guitars & vocals); John Panozzo (drums & percussion); Chuck Panozzo (bass guitar).
* Album produced by Dennis DeYoung; Recorded at The White Room (Chicago, Illinois); Engineered and mixed by Gary Loizzo and James "JY" Young.
+ "Don't Give Up On Me" - A non-Styx version of this track (recorded by Glen Burtnik as a solo) was released on the 1996 Glen Burtnik album "Retrospectacle".
+ "It Takes Love To Make Love" - A slightly re-recorded and remixed version of this track was released on the 1996 Styx album "Greatest Hits Part 2" under the title "It Takes Love". The band liked the original version so much that they just stripped off Glen Burtnik's parts and had Tommy Shaw record over them.
+ "Paradise" - A non-Styx version of this track (with slightly different lyrics and lead vocals by Dawn Marie [Candlish]) was released on the 1996 Dennis DeYoung album "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame - A Musical". A re-recorded Styx version finally saw commerical release on the 1997 Styx double album "Return To Paradise".

I am pretty certain all of these tracks sounded great. :D

Didn't even check the date on this one, Suite. However, I notice I joined the board shortly after you posted this one, for what it is worth. Also, for what it is worth, what I said above would have applied then, as it does now.

Most of us were a little busy back in 2004.

I vividly remember that all through 2004 Froy had promised us the demise of current Styx. Dennis would sweep down, sword ablazin' to take back over the reins of Styx. It was something all 'true ' Styx fans wanted. It was the second coming of Denny.

All other posts were ignored as we waited anxiously for DDY to reappear in Styx.

Froy babboozelled us for his ill gotten gains. Suite and everyone elses Assembly Lines were ignored. To this day we still wait and wonder is today the day that Denni.............................................

I'll put these demos on the list of the other stuff I'm looking for and can't find; Hollywood '99 House of Blues show, Texxas Jam 1983 from Dallas, and Texxas Jam from Houston '83.

I could be wrong but I think Styx did a version of "Chain Me Down" that would have been on "Grand Illusion". I also heard rumors about a song from the same era called "Bride Of Frankenstein". Don't know about that one but it has been years since i have heard someone mention it.

There is also a LIVE disc from 77 or 78 that was supposed to be released back in 2004 or 05. Universal actually had it on their release schedule as part of the "Remaster Series". It was going to be disc 2 of a "Grand Illusion" re-issue (much like those deluxe editions that they did a few years ago with The Who, Meat Loaf, etc)

CMD was recorded in at least demo form. The live material exists as well. BoF is one that I haven't heard of.

It was "Worshiping Heroes". There was a magazine that came out and talked about that a bit. I can't remember what the magazine was, but Bowie was on the cover and it was really the first printed piece on Styx I ever saw. Before Circus and definitely before all the 16 Magazine BS that appeared around the time of Cornerstone.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Here is some information on "Chain Me Down"........

First from StyxCollector:

5. The Styx version of "Chain Me Down", which was at least demoed (and is rumored to have been multitracked) for Grand Illusion, but dropped for "Miss America". "Chain" was later re-recoreded and released on James Young's first solo album, City Slicker.

Second from an interview with JY:

RS: When was the material for City Slicker written?
YOUNG: Some of the material were ideas that were too hard-edged for Styx, that had been submitted through the years, but were rejected. To me, 'Chain Me Down,' and 'Wild Dogs' are like fun-type hard rock and roll songs, and I really thought they were clever and powerful musical statements - but the other guys didn't see it my way. Those things were written a few years back. The title track, 'City Slicker,' was written with my collaborator, Steven A. Jones. We had always talked about writing a song, but had never gotten around to it. Then we got a chance to work on it, and we went into the studio, and I really liked what came out of it. So, some of the stuff is from the past, and some of the stuff is brand new.

RS: Is 'City Slicker' autobiographical?
YOUNG: To a certain degree. I'm a person who grew up on the South side of Chicago, so I very much have an urban state of mind, although I will say that some of the best parties I've ever been to have been held by people out in the rural areas, who really know how to get down. I'm basically a city dweller; I like the buzz and excitement that happens in all the great cities of the world. So I'm a 'City Slicker' in some regards - but the song is a bit tongue-in-cheek, and of course the delivery is a bit over the top. It's that way on a couple of the songs. On 'Chain Me Down' I get into this weird, wild persona. I sorta get my therapy that way, because hey, I'm normally a nice guy, you know - me and Ozzy Osbourne. We're both mild-mannered, but of course I haven't been to the Betty Ford Center yet, so he's got one over me. But on stage - and on record - the wild beast that is in all of us comes out of me, and it's really healthy to have that happen.

Don't hold your breath. Ive been waiting for Froy to send me some rare live Styx CD that he promised me for well over 5 years( at least to Tommy Shaw marriages ago).

Before he would send it to me he made me sign some oath that I would never burn another copy for anyone and I even had to promise to give him my bank code password if I did( Bosco), along with my childrens Social Security numbers. I went through all 26 steps( hoops) that Froy made me go (jump) through, sent him a bunch of rare or expensive stuff along with 2 large prepaid envelopes but still everyday when I check the mail there is no package from our Gowan lovin friend.

DONT hold your breath!!! His collection is a myth!!!!

P.S. I heard that Froy is now working for BP in their claims department.

Your delusional my friend Froyster. Your Return To Paradise material ( that I would NEVER have a desire to own) was shipped to either Al Gore or Rob( the guy who tried to sell O'Bama's senate seat).

I believe the Return To Paradise stuff was shipped to one or both of the above on a promise that they would purchase some sort of a used vechicle from you( I could be wrong on that).

What you promised me was a 4 LP( 3 sides live)& ( one side the band talking about the making of the Grand Illusion). You told me that you owned this rare album it and had it burned to CD.

Thats OK brother I forgive ya.
