Sad songs...

Paradise Theater

Photographs and Memories by Jim Croce. The song always seemed autobiographical to me; because that's all we have left of him.
Pretty much any Croce song is bittersweet to me. An enormous talent that was taken WAY too soon.

Styx's Golden Lark ; fantastic song, but the most DEPRESSING Styx song EVER!!!! There is no hope in that song at all!!!

If DDY continues to write musicals, he needs to find a place for that one somewhere. It has a very operatic sense to me.

Add JC's "As Bad as This" to the list of depressing Styx songs.....

It's so wierd that they attached the upbeat " Plexiglass Toilet" to the end of this particular song, isn't it ?

Tori Amos - Winter
The whole father/daughter thing gets me

Iced Earth - Question of Heaven
If you've ever seen the movie Spawn or read the comics then you know what this song is about.

I agree, Classic. Kind of a downer of a song. However, it has one of the most beautiful musical breaks Styx has ever done IMO.

I've always found the ending of the Paradise Theatre to be a bit melancholy, if not overtly sad. (end of HPTP and AD 1958)

Another "sucker" raising hand here . I enjoyed it. Enjoyed the concept. Liked the little movie on CITA. Liked the manic Roboto video. Think one of Tommy's best Styx songs, Just Get Through the Night, and JY's BEST Styx song, Double Life, are on this album.

Is it my favorite? No. But I like it.

And oh my, haven't we been here before indeed, Sadie.

It's deemed "uncool" to like KWH.

I never bow to that pressure, sorry.

You've got to keep in mind that many things judged outside of the context of the times in which they existed seem odd. At the time Kilroy was released it as very cool amongst people my age (12-15). Roboto was a HUGE hit and has become a part of the cultural lexicon. I will admit that I now think that 12-15 year olds know diddly (I have one myself) so take that for what you will. Still there are some great tracks on that album, even with today's hindsight.

I'm with you on this one, classic. Give me the Wooden Nickel stuff any day of the week. I've always wondered if EOTC or BNW would've sold better had there never been a KWH. I'm sure that the success of Paradise Theatre, the MTV crowd, and the young fans who only knew them for Roboto inflated the sales of that album big time. It certainly seems to be the least favorite album by the "classic lineup" on this board, anyway.

I enjoyed it. Enjoyed the concept. Liked the little movie on CITA. Liked the manic Roboto video. Think one of Tommy's best Styx songs, Just Get Through the Night, and JY's BEST Styx song, Double Life, are on this album.

I don't enjoy it. I thought the concept was silly. I threw away my CITA video. Don't think I've ever seen the Roboto video, unless it's the same as what's on the CITA video. Having said that, I still throw this CD in from time to time, trying to see if it will ever grow on me. I've gotten to where I can at least appreciate Mr. Roboto. I think Double Life is a great song. I think Cold War and High Time are two of the worst songs TS and DDY have ever written, respectively. Just Get Through This Night is finally starting to grow on me. Don't Let It End is a decent ballad, but nothing new on the heels of Babe and Best Of Times. Haven't We Been Here Before: another ballad, but I really like the way the chorus is arranged. I wish they would've done more than that.

BTW, I'm just sharing my opinion and mean no disrespect to those who really enjoy this album. I'm truly glad that there are people out there that get into Kilroy and the whole video/stageshow thing. And I seriously do wish that I was one of them.

I bawled like a baby when I heard Cyclorama. Talk about sad.

Given how anti-Carrot you are at the present time, I'm surprised you took the time to acquire this album (download, borrow, purchase, etc.) and then even more time to listen to it. Based on many of your current lineup comments, you giving it the time of day was a stretch, in my mind. If you don't mind, would you explain exactly what circumstances led you to listen to Cyclorama? Just curious.

Well, the same could be said about Cyclorama, from my point of view. I agree with you about not bowing to that kind of pressure though. We'll just have to agree to disagree about these two albums.

And part of my problem with Kilroy is that I was 20 years old when it was released. Old enough to have lofty expectations of Styx. I think I had grown out of the demographic they were trying to reach, I was too old...

This LP actually turned me off to the group...I probably would have ignored their next release........on second thought, I DID ignore EOTC, largely because of my impression of KWH. I believed they had nothing left to offer at the time. The passing of 22 years has done nothing to soften how I feel about KWH....give me Cyclorama, Styx I, Rockers.....anything else from the catalog if I am to be given a choice.
to me, it just doesnt measure up to anything else in the catalog except maybe mBrave New World.

Classic,

That's why I qualified it as being cool to early teens. You have stated many times, going back at least a year, that you'd rather listen to Styx I than Kilroy, so I know you're serious. For me, Kilroy was the first Styx album I heard, so it's more special because of that. Had I been 20 and familiar with the whole catalog beforehand, who knows? I may very well feel the same way you do. In the end, we judge what we like based upon the filters we see things through. That's why I try not to be too judgemental about someone else's taste.

And, Kilroy was one of the first albums I ever owned....at the cool age of 16. Don't know if it was cool or uncool to like Styx. What I remember is every kid being into Def Leppard, Van Halen, Motley Crue, and all of the emerging early glam bands....not Styx, or Journey, or REO, or whatever AOR band....those bands were on the way 'out'.

I'm just glad I bought Frontiers at the same time so I had something decent to listen to. The only bad thing is they both have a Roboto on the cover. Oh, well.

Yeah, it went platinum. So what. Popular music isn't always good music...and yes, I do believe it sold because of being the follow up to PT. Finaly, I bet it was pressed and released as a platunum record.

In the end, we judge what we like based upon the filters we see things through.

I don't judge music by what I see. I judge it by what I HEAR. I didn't like what I heard on Kilroy. It's that simple.

I respectfully disagree. But it's cool. People are gonna like what they like. I understand people wanting a certain sound from a band. It just doesn't matter to me. I like when any band changes itself...if I like the new material. In this case, I did.

And we roll merrily along...

Nazareth - Dream On (From their 2XS Album)
-----------------------------------------------------
I think this song is better than "Love Hurts" probably because LH is sooo beat to death on radio. Classic rock stations think Nazareth recorded only 2 songs -- LH and HOTD. Drives me nuts when they won't play an obscure deep cut. And if you call and request this song, the DJ plays Aerosmith's "Dream On" instead. Grrrrr.

Peter Gabriel -- Don't Give Up (W/ Kate Bush)
-----------------------------------------------------
Really sad and dreary song. The only inspiring parts of the song are done by Kate Bush and one specific verse by Gabriel. The rest is just haunting and heart breaking.

Brian May -- Too Much Love Will Kill You
-----------------------------------------------
This song literally saved my life in 1992 back when I was 19. Literally. My radio was tuned to Rockline with Brian promoting "Back To The Light" and before this track, Brian said that between 1982 and 1989, he came very close on a number of times of just driving his car off a bridge and this song was the embodiment of all the grief and depression he was going through. If this song hadn't came on the radio, my brains would've been on my bedroom wall. Instead of pulling the trigger, I listened. Looking back I marvel at the craziness of that close call. I mean, I couldn't have been no more than 3 pounds of pressure away from ending everything. Just a mere 3 freakin' pounds of pressure.

I love Jim Croce as well, and your right about one taken way too soon, My bro in law knows his brother and sees him weekly, he just gave him a cassette tape of Jim playing blue grass when he was really young...funny
