I loved the Rolling Stone Styx Cyclorama review when the author talked about the song 'Kiss Your Ass Goodbye' being about the Iraq war. He even(mis) quoted some of the lyrics for the readers. He later went on to ask the question, 'How could Brian Wilson hang around with such a bunch of losers?'. You just had to know that he listened to that CD from first to last song with an open opinion, and nothing prejudged about Styx and the CD.

Personally, I just finished reading a 4 part article( Mpls Star Tribune newspaper) about my favorite baseball player of all time Kirby Puckett. The article was about Kirby's life & death. There were quotes in this series from his agent, friends, fiancee, ex wife, best fishing buddy(Sherm) and many others.

Nothing from Kirby, so I guess I just cant believe what I just read.

Ash & some others have already ripped into a forthcoming Styx book based on his speculation that Dennis DeYoung or James Young were not directly involved in the writing of that book.

He has stated that because some imformation will come second or third hand and not directly from the source it can not fully be believed. ' Everyone has an agenda' Ash was quoted as saying. I believe he was referring to the author when Ash made that statement.

If what Ash says is correct I suggest that when you are done reading my rant please go and throw out all bibles and history books that you have lying around. How can they be believed??

And since 'EVERYONE' has an agenda, I suppose Dennis, Tommy, JY, Chuck, Todd, Glen etc would also have one( agenda) when they are telling 'their side ' of the Styx saga.

Based on Tommy, Glen, Todd and whoever else was quoted in Sterling's book having an agenda, we wont be able to believe one damn thing from this or any other book that we may read.

Let me summerize: If you dont get it directly from the horses mouth you really cant believe it, and since EVERYONE has an agenda you really cant believe these people either.

Shit, so I guess if you dont see it with your own eyes, or hear it with your own ears then it never really happens.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Ash!!!!

I will never understand how anyone can pass judgement about a work of anything that they have never seen, heard or read??

What I am trying to figure out is, What was Ash's agenda suppose to be on his post????

Yogi.
I like the bit about history books ,and the bible specially.
Who was there to take notes about what happened before there was anyone around to notice anything of what had gone before.Good one.

Incidentally - that ISN'T WHAT I SAID. Perhaps if you would learn to READ it would clear it up for you. What I said was that neither Dennis or JY were INTERVIEWED for the book, not that they didn't have part in writing it. Jesus.

And furthermore, I didn't RIP INTO IT. I pointed it out and made a statement that it's not likely to be as definitive as some would like without that.

But whatever - believe what you want to believe. You apparently want to be the arbiter of what someone can and can't have an opinion on. I can't even make the point that it's too bad that 40% of the band isn't represented in this book without you getting bent about...... well I'm not even sure what you're bent about.

Seriously, I'm very much aware that I come off that way sometimes. Frankly, I don't think you can be effective as a writer if you don't have that. Any more than a performing musician can be effective if he does not have the bedrock belief that his natural place is on stage in front of the world. I pretty much guarantee you that every performer, actor, writer you are aware of on the planet is pretty ego-driven. So I'm guilty, lol, but I'm in good company.

Some of the best! LOL

FYI, I've since gotten used to your...approach. lol

You're OK, Sterling. I'm still not in love with the idea of the book, but I don't fault anyone for wanting to read it at all. Morbid curiousity and all. I believe people when they say it isn't tabloid-esque, and that's awesome, really. I hope it was all worth your while, considering all the work you've done.

Sounds like a great book. I normally don't buy that many books but this one intrigues me. The story of Styx always has. I will probably buy it.

My opinion the book needs to be unauthorized. You can not get all the views of what happened and have it authorized too much interesting information would end up on the cutting floor.

This wouldn't be the first unauthorized bio and it won't be the last.

If you think you're going to get anything close to the truth from an official biography, you're kidding yourselves.... this is the way to do it ladies and gentlemen... and I'll be buying a copy.

Well, actually, just a temporary front page is up, along with a guest book. It's just temporary, there will be a lot more coming soon including FAQ's, About the Author, excerpt from my Author's Note, and more. Look for some very cool stuff to come online soon as well . . . I will be running a sample chapter online soon, as well as my exclusive interview with Tommy Shaw. Look for both of those near the beginning of December.
I hope all is well.

I found this definition of "unperson" on Wikipedia. Sounds like what JY is trying to do to DDY:

"Unperson is a person who had been "vaporized"; who has been not only killed by the state, but effectively erased from existence. Such a person would be written out of existing books, photographs, and articles so that no trace of their existence could be found in the historical record. The idea is that such a person would, according to the principles of doublethink, be forgotten completely (for it would be impossible to provide evidence of their existence), even by close friends and family members, and mentioning his/her name is thoughtcrime. (The concept that the person may have existed at one time, and has disappeared, cannot be expressed in Newspeak.) Compare to the Stalinist practice of erasing people from photographs after their death."

I still think it would be funny if Styx re-released all their old albums with DDY's face/name removed. On the cover of PO8 they could put one of those Easter Island statues in place of DDY's mug. :D

Larry would have to rerecord the DDY tunes too, to take out DDY's voice

The cover of Sterling's book kind of looks like Supertramps final album cover 'Famous Last Words.'

Does anyone else think so???

Softcover, with quite a few photos (have not counted), and as far as page number, we are still experimenting with sizing so I don't know final page count, but I predict something like 300-350. It's twelve chapters and the chapters range from 12 to 30 pages each, plus Author's Note, plus Foreword, plus sources index . . .

More soon. Thanks! I hope all is well

Sterling

PS As to the Supertramp thing . . . I'll have to take a look at that. How funny

You should add an index that references all the verbal barbs that JY has said about DDY since 1999...although maybe that would comprise a Volume 2! :D

Congrats on your book Sterling! I have always wondered why there wasn't a bio (authorized or not) on this band. I can remember back when Paradise Theater was new and Styx was in every issue of "16 Magazine" and "Rockline". I bought them all and took them as gospel truth. I was 12. I remember reading that Tommy did not smoke, was single, liked girls who look like Cheryl Ladd and was nicknamed Munchkin! Was any of that true or did I really throw my babysitting money in the toilet of tabloid truisms?
