The sad reality is that most of the Styx albums as of late (sans hits collections) have a hard time struggling to hit six digits in the USA - forget worldwide sales.

DDY will have the same problem in the US unless there's some sort of time shift/rip in space. Most artists like Styx or DDY sell in the 30 - 100,000 range. It's almost at the point where they would do better business selling it directly, but being on a label gives them distribution (that is, if you can even find it in a store these days ...). Damned if they do, damned if they don't. Heck, even bands like Aerosmith who used to do well aren't (Honkin' on Bobo anyone?). The only band that seems to keep defying logic is Rush. Their new one will sell close to gold if not go gold at some point. The buzz is good, too. The last Styx album (not video) to get any kind of RIAA status is the 1995 Greatest Hits. RTP went gold on video. The only Rush studio album that isn't at least gold is Vapor Trails, and it's very close. Heck, even Rush In Rio and R30 are bonafide sellers. 'nuff said.

In Canada, I expect the DDY to do fairly well based on sales of the CD and DVD of the symphonic show. In Canada, the numbers for gold or platinum are not as high as they are here in the US of A, but the fact that DDY can sell well up there - why shouldn't he market up there first if he has a higher chance of success?

I haven't seen the numbers yet, but I'll bet Influence is doing way better than any of the past few Styx releases.

As NH said, I'm just calling this spade a spade.

Enough talk of this new CD that is suppose to blow everyone away. Not going to happen. It may have some nice tunes on it, but sorry to say nothing new by DDY or Styx will blow anyone's socks off. The only possible way would be if they would get back together, lock themselves in a studio for 6 months with no wives or other family members and smoke some dope. Otherwise forget it.

Well, considering DDY hasn't done dope in the longest time, even if you give massive amounts to JY or TS, I don't think it'd help. Imagine BNW was not the fiasco it was and that it was a wholly band written, produced, and recorded album in a proper way. Does anyone here really think it would have sold much better in 1999/2000? I know I don't.

Nearly 10 years later, would a DDY/TS/CP/JY/Todd album fare any better? If anything, it'll do worse given what we've seen of aging bands (except Rush of course :D ). Would a Styx album with DDY sell better than one with Gowan? Yes, but we're not talking the difference of millions in 2007.

I think some fans really need to stop kidding themselves. Will these guys still have a modicum of success? Absolutely. DDY's success in Canada proves it. But will it be 1980 all over again? Not on your life.

S&A is definitely a grower. VT wasn't.

If Styx or DDY could release something half as good, I'd be happy.

I predict that nobody will care and it will be all the same old same old...

There will be ONE rock song on it.
The rest will be love songs to Yoko... I mean Suzanne using a shitty Fender Rhoades piano.
The guitar will sound terribly watered down and at least two songs will have the word "Paradise".

I'd LOVE to be wrong, but Dennis just seems like a one-trick pony anymore.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Like Styx isn't? Just calling it what it is. Cyclorama hasn't aged well for me, and wasn't exactly groundbreaking. Notice the lack of new material from the Styx camp - I think:
a) The Shaw writing well is dry (would you want a Styx album of all JY tunes?)
b) They know just as well as we do it's going to sell in the 50,000 range, so is it worth the trouble of even doing it?
c) "Yes I Can" proves that TS is always about the "rock" lol

I'm thankful for any new material either camp releases, but I don't think either will be giving us the second coming of GI. Again, fans need to stop sniping and realize that both camps are far more similar than they may want to admit.

I don't think DDY or current Styx will be pulling a Carlos Santana and resurecting their career of producing radio hits. DDY is probably trying to prove that he can still write and sing a Rock song. In the process he will get some airplay in Quebec and maybe sell a few more copies than Styx's most recent material. For someone at his age and not being a household name, that will be an achievement. I sometimes see JY quoted as saying that Styx will get back to Radio and the charts, that teenagers have discovered the music, etc. I don't see it happening for any of the players.

That's your opinion. Cyclo is the most played Styx album out of all of them at my house and it doesn't have to be groundbreaking. It does have to be good and it was. How much groundbreaking did Styx ever do? Not much...
Never said TS was always about Rock. However, with his version of the band, I know that there will be at LEAST two rock songs on the album. With Dennis, good luck with that... The guy hasn't done a ROCK song since Boomchild. That was 17 (SEVENTEEN) years ago. Tommy has done a lot more with his time than DeYoung has.
I don't think you can say Tommy's well is dry. Jesus, when's the last time dennis did ANYTHING??? After so long out of the spotlight, he'd BETTER do a friggin' amazing album.

I'm not sure why you turned my pessimistic Dennis post into a Shaw post. My post had NOTHING to do with Shaw and everything to do with what I expect (or don't) out of Dennis. It had NOTHING to do with Shaw OR Styx.

Speaking of 'stop sniping'...

Groundbreaking is relative. Better than BNW? Absolutely. But that wasn't hard to do.

Well, there have been a few songs. Rock is also relative. "My G-d Can Beat Up Your G-d" wasn't bad and rocked harder than anything on Boomchild - and that song was froma few years ago. Not great, but far from horrid. I've also heard the new song via boot - it isn't bad either. More vintage vibe than the "My ..." song. Nor was it "Rockin' the Paradise". And you need to separate DDY solo from DDY with Styx. DDY with Styx always had rocking songs on each album. On his solo projects it's his personal tastes, and you can see where Styx was more of a compromise between everyone than people would like to admit.

I'll say it again: TS is more at home with an acoustic or playing slide than he is flat out rocking. If you saw the Shaw Blades show you'd see that TS was more in his element and he looked like he was having a good time for the first time in years. I've seen Styx every tour since 1991, and quite a lot since 1999. I haven't seen TS have this much fun since Damn Yankees. What does that tell you?

Well, DDY bashing is ridiculous at this point. I was pointing out how ridiculous it was to basically do so and again, both camps are way more similar than they are different. They have the same problems and even together with DDY and some random bass player (CHuck, Glen, Ricky, or someone else), they wouldn't be doing that much better as a band entity.

What could an outside producer do for/with Styx? I can't think of anyone specifically but I look at Rush and the producer for S&A. Got something special out of them.

Take that bet, Raj..BBT only sold like 10,000 copies.

I believe and Sterling may confirm this but I think BBT has sold over 50,000 copies.

It did . . . last time I checked, which was quite some time ago, I seem to recall it was headed for 70,000. Sales had slowed to an absolute trickle and I think that record, along with CYCLO, will be unavailable in a few years, but BBT actually did slightly better than CYCLO. Neither did very well at all, and the same is true of every Styx album since RTP.

As far as Dennis' new record exceeding or doubling those sales, I guess we'll see. He does have a healthy base in Canada, but let's remember that his last album that sold so strongly up there was essentially a hits package, even if it was recorded in new versions. That does not necessarily mean that new, untested material will follow suit. That's an awfully hard road for any of the classic artists. I would love to see the new album do well, but I'm not gonna make any sweeping predictions, LOL. In a perfect world for me, the new Dennis album would go platinum and then a new Styx album would go platinum later this year. I'd love that (because it would bring more attention to a subject in which I have a substantial investment), but I'm guessing we'll have to settle for whatever they do and learn to be happy with it.

I hope all is well.
