OMG..... i just LOVE this song. The NIN (reznor) version is great, but Johnny takes it to a whole new level. simply amazing. for those of you who aren't familliar with it, go here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go

it is breathtaking- the raw emotion, pain, disappointment, and disdain he sings with. Another poignant version was performed by trent reznor solo on piano, for the Katrina tribute show.

Fantastic! I always thought that "Hurt" was a fitting coda to Johnny Cash's career.

Elton John-Sixty Years On

This is one of my all-time favorite Elton songs. I always wonder how he (and Sir Paul) feel NOW about songs, written when they were young, that deal with the "ancient" ages of 60 and 64, LOL!

"I've no wish to be living, sixty years on" Heh.
"Will you still need me? Will you still feed me, when I'm sixty-four?" Heh, heh.

Damn, that Hurt song is extraordinarily depressing! I had another NIN song in mind as well when I made this list. It was on Pretty Hate Machine called "Something I Can Never Have." Also pretty depressing, but not as much as "Hurt."

I think Styx's "Lords of the Ring" is very sad because it sounds like a song that Spinal Tap would have done. Maybe they got that song from Queen because Chuck was sleeping around with Freddie Mercury.

Pure crap.

Love the harmonies in this one. Plus the funky accordion solo at the end. Really good stuff those two did!

Hiya, classic! :) I can do you one sad dog song better -- Ol' Shep sung by Elvis Presley. I never failed to cry when I was a kid and I heard this one!

Elvis! of course. "In the Ghetto."

It's funny, I was going to put a disclaimer not to put "sad" songs you think "suck" because I knew certain people would take the opportunity to try and make a dumb joke, but then I gave everyone the benefit of the doubt. That'll teach me. ;-)

This one's made all the more sad in knowing that it was Freddie's last vocal and that he seems to have been a really lonely person.

Mother Love ~ Queen

I don't want to sleep with you
I don't need the passion, too
I don't want a stormy affair
To make me feel my life is heading somewhere
All I want is the comfort and care
Just to know that my woman gives me sweet mother love

I've walked too long in this lonely lane
I've had enough of this same old game
I'm a man of the world, they say that I'm strong
But my heart is heavy and my hope is gone
Out in the city, in the cold world outside
I don't want pity, just a safe place to hide
Mama please, let me back inside

I don't want to make no waves
But you can give me all the love that I crave
I can't take if you see me cry
I long for peace before I die
All I want is to know that you're there
You're gonna give me all your sweet mother love

My body's aching but I can't sleep
My dreams are all the company I keep
Got such a feeling as the sun goes down
I'm coming home to my sweet mother love

OMG! What a great song!!

I got the extended versions (or whatever it is called) of Eye in the Sky and there is a gorgeous version of this with Eric Woolfson singing with piano only. Gives me goosebumps!
