The quick summation of my thoughts: oy.
I have to agree with a lot of people - the beginning verses with Gowan hanging out there is just not very good. I don't mind the different phrasing; that's not the issue. He hits the notes fine, so his range is OK. My problem is the sound of his voice is just not right; it's too thin, and he warbles a bit when holding long notes (and it sounds like he goes slightly out of tune at the end). You can say Dennis went "Broadway" at some point (which he's dialed back since), but this is the opposite end of the spectrum in not a good way. Ironically, the double tracking (and adding Tommy in for harmonies) for everything past this is MUCH better (and is more pleasant than on GI), but still not very good. As I've said numerous times, I like Gowan on his tunes, but he's all kinds of wrong for singing some of the Dennis ones. It's a blessing and curse, because he brings a lot to the table for Styx.
I have no huge issues with this musically. It's somewhat like their live version, but more in line with the old studio one at the same time. The most disappointing thing is the guitar work. Until the end, it's a bit muddy in the mix, which could be a mixing issue, not a playing issue.
The best part about this track? Todd's drumming. He bridges what John did with also making it his own. Kudos.
If they really wanted to polarize people, this is arguably one of the tracks to do it. If I had a #2 on a list of "Please let Tommy sing this song instead of Gowan" songs after "Queen of Spades", it's this one. It's irked me since I first saw them with Gowan. I disliked it then, and the studio version makes it that much more glaring.
