Funny thing is, I have always thought of Styx as a pop/rock band that in the early days veered more towards Progressive Rock :?

A lot of enthusiasm around this,I see.
I thought they were categorized as pomp-rock.

I'm glad Tommy and JY will be on this season. They're a hell of a lot better than guests of the past, like Marilyn Manson. Did anyone see that episode? Yikes-he annoyed the hell out of me. Might be the worse one ever, IMO. It's good to evolve with a variety of guests and Styx has plenty of rockers that still stand up well today.

If it were 1995, they wouldn't be on such a show and you know it. Dennis was much more concerned about the brand and image than these guys.

Give em a break. They are getting profile and The Metal Show is actually one of the few decent shows on any of these music channels.

Also, while looking through my Direct TV on screen TV guide I noticed that JY and Tommy, and 'other members of Styx' will be hosting some sort of music & weather show on The Weather Channel late in April.

how bout we just label styx as "tampon rock" or whatever dennis's wife wants the band to be labeled.

these arguments are so fun......i love the tiger getting poked in the cage that goes on.......fact is, when styx was in their heyday playing arenas they were a full on guitar slingin hard rock band.....that cannot be disputed.

yes they had ballads....yes they had progressive rock oriented songs.......all of that existed but all of that also exists for other undisputed hard rock bands.....

I vote for Tampon Rock for the label of the current band. No argument there. In fact, there's another merch idea for the band. Just think of it, get your rockin' "Styx Tampons" now!! 8)

Which is exactly why I say that if it were 1995, these trolls would not be making arguments against it.

They know what you say above is the truth...they just do not want to give any legitimacy to that describing the band of today..

OK I'll bite. Please point me to an article, book where a critic, reviewer or whomever refers to Styx as a hard rock act.

And again, time or incarnation of Styx has nothing to do with whether I or others consider Styx as a hard rock act. I NEVER considered them to be that type of band. It's not meant to down play or speak of their music in a negative way at all.

look.......styx has the vast catalog that points to many different styles of music......they had all kinds of tunes......and at their core they were simply a "rock" band....

this all boils down to perception and that lies in the ear of the listener and i guess what they are drawn to. for me i woudl rather hear their harder songs, their rocking songs etc....... a thousand times over versus hearing babe or first time or dont let it.

i LOVE dennis and I recognize that those songs were nicely written songs but it isnt what I prefer.....I woudl rather hear dennis doing come sail away, castle walls, queen of spades, rockin the paradise and tuens like that.

I think his best ballad ever was best of times and I rank that song amongst styx's top 10 ever or maybe top 5 songs.

i also love the side of dennis that included songs like why me, lonely people and nothing ever goes as planned.....but at the end of the day the styx i truly prefer more than anything were the songs that nearly everyone would consider hard rock or very damn close to being hard rock and that preference along with the fact that back in their arena days those songs dominated their live setlists I would say that pretty much means most folks agreed that they were either hard rock or "rock with an edge" or whatever.......and I do think it was songs like babe, mr. roboto and dont let it end that made their public "non concert going" fans simply think they were soft rock.

and i guess in reality something that would help me alot in this dicussion would be for you guys that disagree about styx being labeled as a hard rock band to define or list a handful of known bands that you would consider to be "hard rock".....not metal but hard rock.

Examples of Hard Rock bands that come to mind would be Ted Nugent, AC\DC, Thin Lizzy, Alice Cooper, Van Halen, April Wine, Rush, Led Zepplin, Jimi Hendrix, UFO, Kiss, Motorhead, Guns N' Roses to name a few. There bands that are hard rock to their core and don't stray into ballad or Pop territory. It's not that Styx did not have music that had a hard edge to it but their styles were diverse so you just can't slap the term hard rock to describe the band at it's core. The influences of DDY, TS and JY which were different from each other are at the bands core. Again, this in no way degrades or makes Styx's musical contributions to R'n' R less important.

ok that helps me alot......with the exception of rush your list is a VERY blues based list....VERY blues based.......so i think that may be the difference in some regards......styx's music rarely "feels" blues based even when it sometimes is.

and i would agree that the bands on your list would be hard rock bands with the exception of motorhead that i consider more metal or what metal used to be in the early 80's.

i have not heard many ballads if any at all from nugent, ac/dc or alice cooper that i can remember and maybe hendrix....dont listen to UFO enough to know their catalog real well. BUT all of the rest of those bands on your list have certainly recorded ballads and many times those ballads been hits.......in fact the first thing i think of when i think of april wine is "just between you and me"....kiss had beth....g and r had patience and etc....etc......etc....

i think after seeing yoru list and discussing this that it simply boils down to your definition of hard rock vs. my definition of hard rock. my definition includes a broader scope of bands and msuic than yours does.

thats why i woudl consider bands like styx, foreigner, boston, cheap trick, night ranger, triump and others similar to that sound as hard rock. the bands you named with the excpetion of motorhead would be hard rock to me as well but i can say that for the most part it is harder than the band i named but close enough to be th esame genre.

Here is how I see it

Much harder than Styx - Metallica, AC/DC, Nugent, Ozzy, KISS, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Zepplin, G&R, etc.
Somewhat harder than Styx - Van Halen, Blue Oyster Cult, Def Leppard, Cinderella, Ratt, early Bon Jovi
Similar - Slighly harder than Styx - Night Ranger, Foreigner, Kansas
Similar to Styx - Journey, REO, Asia, Boston
Somewhat lighter than Styx - Survivor, Toto, Outfield, Chicago, Eagles, Starship, Billy Joel, Elton John, Dennis DeYoung (solo), Steve Perry (solo), Phil Collins, Huey Lewis and the News
Much lighter than Styx - Air Supply, Richard Marx, Barry Manilow, Lionel Ritchie

Of course there is mine or someone's view point when discussing this subject. What I am trying to point out is that when most people in the music industry describe Styx' music they are not using the term "hard rock" and that seems to be from the diversity in their musical styles. On a side not sure some of the bands I gave as examples have done a ballad but, no where near as often or something as soft as Babe in my opinion. When speaking about That Metal Show one of the interesting facts I found out was that if VH1 hasn't played the artists videos on their channel then they won't book that artist for the show.

Styx is a "rock" band. Some songs rock harder than others, but there's that balance that I like. I'm glad they're on TMS... it's my favorite show and I feel they have every right to be on there. The host has not given parameters so this shouldn't be such a heated argument. I'm glad it's JY and Tommy and nobody else in the current version.

Wow... You guys will argue about anything, won't you?

Really... If TMS can have Jack Blades and Brad Gillis on, they can certainly have Tommy and JY. I don't see much difference. They interview/feature musicians from many different facets of rock, not just metal.

Obsessed about labels much? :?
