I have lots of cool Styx Stuff from the band's heyday stored in my parents attic. I think the oldest thing I have is a concert ticket stub from the first Styx show I saw in 1975 or 1976. Tommy was already in the band but Crystal Ball wasn't out yet. I'm not sure what programs I have other than the Kilroy one. Next time I'm at my parents house I should pull down the boxes and take a look. I also know there is an original Paradise Theater Tour jacket in there. Everything that I have I purchased at the original concerts. They used to sell lots of cool stuff at their shows!

I still have programs from the Po8 tour and from Kilroy. Still have original PT shirt and a sticker I picked up somewhere with the Roboto head on it. Also have a ton of articles and pix from back then. What I really cherish are a bunch of interviews on cassette I taped off the radio back then. Interviews during Cornerstone, PT and Kilroy years. Also one with Tommy when he put out GWG. Cool stuff.

My issue is this - the shirts ain't Styx. No matter how much Tommy and JY want it to be, Styx isn't a heavy metal band. No way DDY let's this crap out if he's still in the band.

Spinal tap vs. classic rock....

I am not as much perterbed anymore by Styx not touring with Dennis - tour without him. Fine. Its the attempt at repositioning the brand and redefining the band's history that pisses me off.

Heres my gripe.... How can artsy creative people no longer create?????? I thought it was in there DNA.

Current Styx is into EVERYTHING but creating new music. Who cares if it sells, CREATE something new stay fresh!!Do it at home and sell it on line at styworld. Take a small financial hit but for the sake of whatever get some new music out there.

They(The Styx Business) are soooo frickin busy with their coffee, jewelery, T's lunch meat, trash cans etc.... they have forgotten what got em there besides Dennis.

A question that I honestly would like to know is: do they even have to practice anymore? They do the same thing and play the same songs nightly nothings new nothings fresh its just the same old thing.

Of course artsy creative people always create. Doesn't mean that everything created gets put out for public consumption. Do you believe Ansel Adams published every single photograph he ever took? Has Stephen King published every single word he ever wrote? Has DDY put out every song he has written? Of course not. From all I have heard and read in interviews, Tommy writes pretty much all the time. He just posted on Fb that he was working on a new song. Remember Sterling's book? It quoted a friend of Tommy's who said that he has crates and crates filled with cassettes of songs. The artist ultimately decides what gets put out for the masses. The members of Styx are very aware that there are people out there who want new music--but they all have said that 1) it's hard to find the time, and 2) sales for CDs are down. The music market is entirely different now. I'm not excusing them, just repeating what they've said. So, ultimately, yes, artsy people continually create. It's just up to them if it gets put out there.

This is making the assumption that "creativity" is what drives them at this point. It may not be. They may be just happy playing the same kind of gigs month after month, year after year and collecting the money from it. Getting as much profit as they can while the iron is still warm and lets face it, they are not getting any younger.

The reality is they can't change history and it's way too late for them to change the bands image no matter how they try. A good example of this was JY's and Tommy's appearance on That Metal Show. You could just feel the awkwardness in the air and the hosts grasping for things to ask them. Plus they really had no clue as to what Styx was even doing currently. Why, because the hosts and a good majority of the viewers aren't Styx fans because they don't fit the hard rock\metal mold.

Those are just excuses for not just coming out and saying they do not have an interest in releasing new music anymore. Lots of classic rock acts are releasing new material, some on the their own through their websites and itunes and some through labels that support classic acts. Just looking at the news section on the main page of this site confirms this. Styx just doesn't not have the balls to say it, I guess because they may feel it would impact their fan base in some way.

If they are creating, sell it or give it away at their concerts. If they must to cover their costs jack ticket prices up 2-5% and include a 'free'CD of their new music when their fans enter a concert. Doing 100+ shows per year at more or less 5,000 fans per show is alot of people hearing new Styx music. Record it at home burn the discs and 'give' them away. It blows me away that they or their team put all this worthless crap out on the market and they wont put out what got em there. Ive passed up at least 5 shows in the past 3-5 years because of this.

Night Ranger is a great example of this - some great tunes on their last album.

According to Pollstar for 2012 http://www.pollstar.com/news_article.aspx?ID=803803 , Styx ranked...

At #126 (with REO and Nugent) with a total of $6.5M in revenues (average attendance 5,500 per show, $34 avg ticket) for a total of 189K in concert attendance
At #175 (by themselves) with a total of $4.1M in revenues (average attendance 2,100 per show, $34 avg ticket) for a total of 119K in concert attendance

So according to PollStar over 300,000 people saw Styx either by themselves or with REO/Nugent. A far cry when they would do 80 shows and average 30,000 a show at their peak, but still decent numbers due to the frequency of touring. Bet a free CD in everyone's hands could do wonders.

They come to Shreveport, Dallas or Houston and offer 'free' new music( full CD) or even new music for a price I would go to the show. If they would sell new music on their website I would purchase it.

Its garbage, and an insult to their fans that they sell lighters, staplers, coffee mugs, plus all their other worthless crap and wont release a CD of new material.

Rock and Roll my ass. Money Grab without the guy who got you there is more like it.

Milk it til the cow runs dry. Thats what rock and roll is all about???

P.S. Just stopped by Auto Zone and picked up a gallon of 'Styx Winshield Wiper Washer Fluid'

Another great classic band releasing new music is Asia. They have put out 3 new albums; Phoenix, Omega, and XXX. All three are great albums.

They don't do it because they do not have to. The business is already built and still profitable enough. They no longer have to put out new music to get people to come to the shows. It's the path of least resistance. It's much more work to put out an album not to mention the costs involved.

The gravy train ain't going to last forever. By themselves, they can only bring in an average of 2,000 per night according to PollStar. With 3 bands, they average 5,500. These numbers will not be ultra profitable for a promoter. They are close to wearout levels. How many times can these fans see Styx?

This would be the case no matter what they do. I do not single out that is occurring just because DDY is no longer in the band. The average concert goer is not that concerned about bands being all the original or long time members. A perfect example is Styx. Even if DDY was in the band they would not be able to pull significantly higher numbers on their own based on their frequency of touring. It's the diehard fans that debate this stuff into infinity and we all know that in this day and age it's a small segment of their market.

Since were talking about shirts here i've been looking for old tour shirts on ebay.
Of course none are XXL. Some of the prices are ridiculous though.
