He will go to his grave sticking to that story. Since they have been pretty much tight lipped about Styx' dirty laundry, I think other issues are very possible. Such as that his drug use was effecting the operation of the band and his relationships with other band members. In my mind the "I couldn't think about songs about robots" was just a off the cuff dig at DDY. I doubt Tommy is that dense not to get the over all premise behind KWH.
