Here in Tampa, the Classic Rock station, 107.3 The Eagle plays Styx songs during the day. It is not uncommon to hear Grand Illusion, The Best of Times, Come Sail Away, Babe, Loralei and Lady along with Crystal Ball, Renegade, Fooling Yourself, etc.

I've requested I am the Walrus - but to no avail after several requests. I suppose I should call and ask why they won't play it......

Liz,

Does the station play only the classics, or will they play other
"new"music by classic rock groups ?

If they are part of one of the conglomerates that own many of the stations / much of the airwaves these days ( Clear channel is the biggest ) they are very restricted as to what they are allowed to play.

or it may be that you are the only one calling......

Clear channel . . . . regulating the airwaves to limit your listening pleasure. (I'm not a big fan).

Little Suzie and Waiting For Our Time are the only post EOTC Styx songs I've ever heard on the radio around here, although I did hear Paradise one time while shopping at Montgomery Ward's (played over their speaker system, NOT a radio station).

In 1999, CMC released "I Will be Your Witness" from the band XTS. The record company apparently felt that the difficulty the classic rock genre was getting in trying to receive air play might be circumvented if they released a song under a different name. It had no additional support.

Lets face it, the Industry hated Styx in their Hey Day and they hate Styx now. It wouldn't matter if Dennis was there today or not.

I agree Yogi that Cyclorama has some marketable stuff on it. It is unfortunate that CMC doesn't really promote their albums or artists. Hell, all that classic rock stations have to do is mix in the new songs with the old songs of the artists they are milking it from.

Lastly, Clear Channel sucks. Unless your their corporate bed buddy, you can't get airplay on their stations or in their venues. Clear Channel is what is wrong with the music industry.

Speaking of Clear Channel, Clear Channel owns KLOL 101.9 in Houston. It had been a Rock and Roll station since the early 1970's. It actually was the rock voice of Houston for years. They were the ones who sponsered the Texas Rock Jam in Houston that Tommy & Cahil said was the worst fan reception Styx ever got, even worse than Dallas. They had the morning radio 'gods' Stevens and Pruitt for 15 + years.... KLOL truly was one of the BEST and most respected rock stations in the US. Anyway, last Thursday Clear Channel decided to switch their format to Tejano music. As of yesterday KLOL was now a Tejano station. Many people lost their jobs, and a rock institution was gone in a manner of 5 days. Aweful!!!!!!!

I also heard Little Suzie numerous times on the radio.

Just as a post script to what Yogi wrote:

This is the great rock station I grew up with and where I would hear what they called album cuts of songs. So you would hear the entire version of Come Sail Away for example. I believe those stations were called Album Oriented Rock (AOR) stations and Houston only had KLOL. I got my Styx fix from them many a time.

It was a wonderful station with a great history and what a sad ending! Done in a typically clumsy and tone deaf corporate manner by Clear Channel.

Speaking of Clear Channel too, in September we have a new 1980's Rock & More station, The Brew, 97.3- THANK goodness!! I hear Styx every hour, which is good for me. I was caught off guard by hearing "Rockin' The Paradise". I can't remember the last time I heard that on the radio. They even play Tommy Shaw's solo music. Next month the station is sponsoring a "low dough" show. I'm seeing the band Survivor for $9.73 a ticket. It's nice to hear the 80's rock that I haven't heard in quite a while and they also play other songs, just not all the radio"hits" from the bands.

The low points are hearing the J.Geils Band and Gary Numan's song "Cars" over and over. UGH I have to get that song out of my head now - LOL

Suite,

J. Geils rocked. But then again I'm from Boston and a homer so I may be slightly biased. It's too bad they aren't still together.

But I'd give you Gary Numan.

styxfanNH, if they played other J. Geils songs I wouldn't mind, but it seems when I'm driving I always hear "Freeze Frame". I should of specified the song and not the band on that one :)

I didn't know they were from Boston. Do you know what the band is doing now?

Peter Wolf the lead singer is still having a solo career. His last album had some critical aclaim.

The rest of the band appears to have disappeared.

They had a small reunion tour in 99, but we haven't seen anything from them since.

Update: Still waiting to hear I Am The Walrus here in Nebraska . . . . (it would be a pleasant change from all the talk about the Huskers . . . now it seems our coach is calling Oklahoma fans #&*@ hillbillies. Nice. Sorry, getting off topic here).
