Sadie says:

I'm not sure that's true anymore. I know they were the first, but I don't think are the only...anymore.

Bugsy says:

Just to clear things up. I think the record is four TRIPLE platinum albums in a row. There are many artists with way more than 4 platinum albums in a row.

As to whether Styx still holds this honor, I am not sure. I have never heard it disputed
.

NO, NO, NO, I thought I wrote they were the first, I don't think I wrote the only. I thought you all know what I meant - LOL You guys should know me by now - LOL

Sadie says:

What would be the point? Not trying to fight here. But it's pretty clear each "side" has it's own idea of what popular is. Munching on popcorn again.

The point is, that I like to look things up :) I'm just having fun and there's really not a whole lot going on in the Carrot Styx world. Most of these people on here don't even see them in concert or post things. (JUST KIDDING)

Deano says:

SMB, you're full of crap too. Styx will NEVER be more popular than Journey..never have, never will.

OMG, you are TOO funny!! TO ME, like I've said before to you, STYX is more popular, TO ME, TO ME, TO ME!!!

NO, NO, NO. LOL!!! What I was saying above is the original quote was platinum....not triple platinum. That was all I was correcting.

And, again, I don't know if any other artists have matched that four TRIPLE platinum albums in a row.

OMG, you are TOO funny!! TO ME, like I've said before to you, STYX is more popular, TO ME, TO ME, TO ME!!!

You oughta know by now, Suite, that a number of folks on here never read the caveats of "my opinion", "my thoughts", "to ME", etc. It seems those few always seem to think you, and others, are speaking for EVERYONE. OY!

Back when they were both in their primes 1975 - 1984 or there abouts I believe Styx sold far far more albums and had much better concert attendence.

MTV along with Steve Perry's Street Talk really helped Journey and kind of evened the playing field as far as Journeys and Styx'x popularity went.

Since the mid 1990's Journey has sold MANY MANY more CD's than Styx. Their back catalog has sold MUCH MUCH better.

Today I would say that Journey is the more popular band, but still back in the day Styx was more popular.

Sheesh...

I go away for a week, and Journey fans all of a sudden get delusions of grandeur?

Styx IS a better band. Journey IS an inferior band, and the ONLY reason everybody doesn't KNOW this fact is because the jugheads in the radio and "critic" industry who have the taste of a gnat have decided to promote Journey more than Styx (they've also decided to promote Whitney Houston and Britney Spears more than Journey, mind you).
Don't confuse quantity with quality. Because rest assured, Journey has pumped out just as much (if not more) crap than Styx has - and with fewer albums.

I hope that clears things up for everyone.

;-)

It's good to be back in the United States, where everyone speaks spanish!

If you are serious about this - back it up. Escape and Frontiers alone sold over ten million copies. Infinity, Evolution, and Departure were all at least platinum, and I know some were 2x. I would guess Journey sold AT LEAST 15 million albums during that time. That is far away from 'far more', if it IS more.

I also do not believe Styx could come CLOSE to selling tickets like Journey did in the 80's. Styx MAY (I'm not sure) beat out Journey prior to 1981...But, from the Escape tours on, there is no way that Styx comes close.

MTV along with Steve Perry's Street Talk really helped Journey and kind of evened the playing field as far as Journeys and Styx'x popularity went.

Now, that's gotta be a joke! MTV helped JOURNEY? In what way? Yeah, that "After the Fall" video really blew people away. MTV helped Journey about as much as it helped Styx. Journey had videos, Styx had videos. Journey had "Frontiers and Beyond" and the 81 Houston show. Styx has "Caught In the Act".
ST helped Journey about as much as "Girls With Guns" helped Styx. It killed Journey...they went from selling 5x platinum albums to ROR scratching out 2x platinum. ST marked the begining of the end - not a catalyst for popularity.

Today I would say that Journey is the more popular band, but still back in the day Styx was more popular.

I don't see ANY evidence that back in 1981-1984 Styx was more popular then Journey. NONE. Journey beats Styx in every category from 1981 on...by huge margines. Prior to that, I'd say MAYBE - show me the numbers.

For me Styx really hit with Paradise Theater. And that was my favorite album at that time. Journey really hit with Escape. Well Escape was bigger than Paradise Theater. And the follow-up: Frontiers was bigger than Kilroy. Now this is based on memory and my opinion, I do not have the facts. Maybe SMB can look those up. Before the bands hit the big time, I would say that Styx was probably a little more well known. After all, they already had Blue Collar Man and Renegade among the other releases. Journey's individual songs probably were not as known. But when you compare the big time, I think Journey was more "popular" based on sales.

I will not discuss "better" because that is subjective. But I will say that up until Escape was released, I was a bigger Styx fan.

Not at the actual time. Paradise Theatre well outsold Escape in a three year period when both were released. Styx actually had Cornerstone & Paradise Theatre going at the same time as Escape. Both albums during that time frame well outsold Departure( if you go back 2 years) and Escape. Between 1978 - 1981 Styx was the most popular band in America. This was based on album sales and concert attendance. Also during that time The Grand Illusion was still selling big. I have this in a Teen Beat, or it may of even been a Billboard Magazine that I purchased off of E-bay type of article that was printed at that time ( 1981 or 1982).

Frontiers did outsell Kilroy, and by a GREAT number but not iniatially. Mr. Roboto well outsold Seperate Ways as singles and on the chart, and Dont Let It End hammered Faithfully on the charts. For like 9 or 10 months after their release Kilroy outsold Frontiers.

Finally, the only rock album to do better than Paradise Theatre at that time was REO Speedwagons Hi Infidelity. Still, even with that great album there concert attendance and the money they grossed was far below Styx's.

Journey did become more popular but that did not occur until 1985 or 1986.

There sure were some great albums released in the early 80's. Ones you all have mentioned, like ESC4P3, HiInfidelity, Paradise Theatre. I would also add Foreigner 4, Blizzard of Ozz, Pyromania, Diver Down... will we ever see such a great period for music ever again? Methinks not...

Come to think of it, why is Journey playing Arena's and other bands from the same "years" or "eras" are playing these type of venues? Or are they playing at the same places too?

I like coffee to be sure, but I think I would have to pass.

Now balloon festivals and Buffalo Chip Campgrounds....

No seriously, can we call this a draw? You both have made your points. Neither side is going to budge. I hate to see some really cool guys continue to throw around mud like this.

Buffalo Chip Campgrounds is huge. Nice try. Journey played to 15,000+ this year..

Just defending the honour. After all, I am not the author of this thread. Also, his points were lame. he made ZERO points that had empirical data.

I know it's a large venue. I was trying to use some humor because of it's name.

Journey has been working hard on the tour trail for the past 8 years. They toured well in 2001 with Arrival. The following year they played fairs, casinos, small markets. Following that the packaged again for major markets...and then the secondary market again. Journey have played their fair share of rodeos, fairs and casinos. But every year they have increased their audience. Like you guys have pointed out, Styx is probably suffering from touring TOO Much. REO tours a lot, and with Styx a lot so maybe that is hurting them some...and they also have not had ANY new material.

What other bands do you feel fit this category?

Night Ranger? They tour constantly and have not had a recent release.

I honestly can't think of any other bands that are doing what these guys are doing.

Good, our cyber property value can start to recover.....the neighborhood seemed to be going straight to hell there

As a bonus, I won't have to write an explanation of Quality versus Quantity using only small/easy to understand words that someone who's brain is as damaged as Deano's can understand. :P

Not to belabor this....ok, I am belaboring. :P I always perceived, and the numbers bear out, that Journey was a hugely popular band. Moreso than Styx as far as record/CD sales and chart success go.

BUT, I agree with Classic. I always saw Styx as a far more complex and sophisticated band musically. Journey was certainly a terrific band musically but more pop oriented. Styx really was a progressive rock band and I never thought of Journey in that light.

I feel the pop always outweighed the progressive in terms of charts and sales, but does not mean the music, or band, is better or worse. Just different. JMO!!!!!

Styx had bigger success when they started dipping toes into the pop music world, but that also caused problems within the band, as we all know.

We have often argued quality vs quantity here, and we know that leads to some spirited disagreements!

The numbers do bear out that Journey had greater success. I like both bands. I am not going to bash one over the other. I'd rather be happy that there is such strong feelings about each band by various people.

I think Dean made his feelings very clear.

As did Classic.

Now can we go enjoy the music?
