No, not a 'leader'...a dictator.
Okay then... what would you call Tommy? Do you think on Cyclorama, Glen was satisfied with 2 songs on the album? And since you're such a huge Gowan fan... how 'bout him, do you think he was happy with 2 songs on the album? It's not like he hadn't been in the band for a few years by then. Then there's JY, he got 2 songs... oh but I almost forgot, Tommy sang solo parts on both of those. Tommy himself had 6 songs on the album. A bit unbalanced wouldn't you say, but let's try another. Big Bang Theory. Seeing as that there wasn't young Glen to worry about... Tommy was kind enough to give JY 3 and Lawrence 4 songs. Again Shaw garnered himself 6 songs and I'm pretty sure he sings harmony on Talkin' About the Good Times as well. Looks unbalanced to me. And hell, I even like Gowan's covers on the album... so it's never been about not liking "him". Back on topic. Everytime there has been a new "original" song lately, whether it be on a live album (CYO) or a rerecorded one (Regeneration I)... Shaw wrote 'em and sings them. Speaking of CYO and yes I know it's a live album, but someone decides what is performed... there is the DVD and then the CD. On the DVD, there are 17 chapters; 15 actual Styx songs, 1 medley and the finale. Shaw sings solo on 9 of the songs, sings on the medley and is the soul vocalist on the finale. Here's the interesting part, on the CD version of this which is constructed of 13 songs none of Tommy's are dropped. Damn! That's a ratio of 9:2:2. But I'm sure the others were fine with that. Dennis was such a dictator that the last album he appeared on with Styx Shaw sang solo on 7 and Dennis 5. And the 2 JY sang on, once again Tommy sang on both. Let's go back to 1990, DDY was such a dictator he only let young Glen sing 4 out of 10, while JY sang 1 and Dennis garnered 5... not to mention the album is named after Glen's song, what a complete dick for Dennis to have done that. On KWH, Dennis 3, Tommy 3, JY 2 and 1 was sang by both Tommy and Dennis. Well maybe Dennis was a dictator back in the 70's. Let's check on that... Crystal Ball, again... dickhead named the album after a song he didn't write, Tommy got 3 songs, Dennis 3 and JY 1. We could go on and on, but it'll keep proving my point. If Dennis is or was a dictator, what would you call Tommy? Who on the next Regeneration is actually rerecording 2 songs from when he was in another band. I'm sure that was the other guys' idea. Why not rerecord A Criminal Mind? That's at least Gowan's song. Nah, that would be fair that way.
Kinda seems that Shaw wanted control over the band doesn't it? Now that just couldn't be could it? Maybe the source of Tommy's "frustrations" was not what he states it was but rather he wanted to have complete control. As to his current band mates, except for JY and CP the rest are employees of the "Styx business". So Tommy is their boss and what he says goes or guess what? Your out of a job. At least he doesn't need to run around and complain to someone other then the person he has an issue with. Nor does he have to threaten to quit.
Plus, what can they really do about it. Fire him? Try and get excitement surrounding a Styx show with Gowan, Ricky Phillips, JY, Todd and another replacement for an iconic voice. Not gonna happen. They have no leg to stand on. He can do whatever he wants and they're powerless to stop it. What are they gonna do... quit? Yeah right, because better oppurtunities are bangin' down their door.
For Styx to exist at least Dennis or Tommy have to be involved. JY will always be tied at the hip to either of them for a musical career. If you don't think so, show me something he has done on his own (outside of Styx) that had any real success.
City slicker best album ever
