Well, in the interest of being fair, here is one person's review of the double live cd. I take it this individual isn't a fan  His loss.

Did he review something? Or was he pontification about nothing.... No one says he has to like the music or the artist, but isn't he getting paid to review the cd?

Fair game would be comparing the songs to the originals, but he doesn't do that. He could have spoke to its audience of the music, but he doesn't do that. Hey, he could of even compared it to other rock groups that have performed with symphonies like Elton, Yes, or Kiss (I am sure there are others), but he didn't do that.

Kind to think of it, he didn't even trash Styx the entity, he just trashed Dennis as a person.

Makes you wonder if he even listened to it? But why would he do that? Why let the music get in the way of a music review?

We all know the band didn't have many fans in the media unless they were getting something, but the industry has to let it go.

Even those who don't like Dennis in here, never trash Dennis the person.

Well said, styxfanNH. I always get a kick out of these supposed reviews that never mention a single track, or audio quality, or (in this case) the various arrangements used, etc., etc. It certainly lends strongly to the theory that the reviewer did NOT, in fact, listen to the CD. Furthermore, I'd consider this a lousy review regardless of whether it was DDY or an act unknown to me. It provides absolutely no useful information at all.

Ash:

I, too, am contemplating an email to said gentleman. One of my questions will no doubt be: "What the hell is a Vault of the Drow D&D module?" Guess I missed out on that back in '81 :D

This pretty much falls in line with the type of review that comes from someone who already has an extremely negative point of view.

SFNH, you nailed every problem with it. It was a personal attack and had, really, nothing to do with the music.

I already sent him an e-mail. What a jerk!

Next time I am in Houston, remind me to find this guy and kick his ass....

Who on God's green Earth would give their male offspring a sissy middle name like "Nova" ???? I bet he would be a resident expert on being a geek growing up !

I dont even know what the heck some of that stuff he's talking about is....I was too busy going out with my many friends in the late 70's early 80's to know ( I guess ol' John Nova wasn't though ! ) Probably spent all his time hanging out with his best friend, Joe Pinto.....

You previous poster are right on in your assessments, he never listened to the CD, and even if he had , it wouldnt have mattered, since he had already formed his opinions on the man and the history of the group.

Hey Nova boy, if you are reading this, how about doing your homework before writing your next review ? What a moron !

First off, I live near Houston and I have NEVER heard of the Houston Press. The newspaper here is the Houston Chronicle. We used to have the Houston Post, but that folded a few years back. I did a little research about the Houston Press It is the newspaper that caters to Houston's communist readers. Kind of like the Daily Worker!!

That review was damn near as bad as the review Cyclorama got from Rolling Stone magazine. In that review the idiot who did it said Kiss Your Ass Goodbye was a song about the war in Afganistan. How do these people land jobs?????????

Heres to our next check from the Government, Food Stamps & The NFL salary cap

Sincerley,

They are most certainly geeks and losers. Just have a look at some of these "critics" on the commentary shows on VH1. The so-called "experts" who put down the music and the musicians. Largely unattractive losers all.

I am certain this "writer" for the Press wanted to "IMpress" by writing a scathing, ridiculous "review." It had nothing to do with reviewing the Music of Styx CD and everything to do with his very strange, deep-seated dislike of Dennis.

Yes. The Houston Press is a freebie, street paper that leans pretty far leftward. They are known for their sometimes one-sided exposes on the movers and shakers in Houston.

Next time I am in Houston, remind me to find this guy and kick his ass....

I hope some of you e-mailed him and kicked his ass verbally at least.

Now see, we can agree on some things here

I found the review pitifully lacking in anything resembling an intelligent statement.

But by all means folks, don't hold back. Tell us how you all really feel about it. Just kidding.

It's a terrible non-review.

You know, it could just be that this guy is trying to land a job with Rolling Stone. His review would fit in nicely with some of the others I've read there.

My appologies Sadie... I guess I have a bad habbit of hiding my true feelings....

All I get out of this editorial is to insult Dennis and his fans...No review other than the "Music of Styx sounding like Air Supply" comment...This reminds me of a editorial done by a Rockford news paper columnist on the band Poison when they did a show here at the Metro Centre back in 1991 on the Flesh & Blood tour...The editorial was titled "Poison squanders to have a good time"....It talks about how all of the songs and the guitar solos sound the same and the people who attended the concert were a bunch of adolescent pot smokers....

You could also add the pre-review for styx that trashed the band in Atlanta before they even played.

Typical review, he spent to much time cutting down the 80s and an entire generation. Like most STYX or DDY critics he obviously did not listen to the product. Bill Gates slow dancing to Lady...ugh....I am sure he will give great reviews to the new Britney Spears CD though.
