New Walrus News - Styx

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Thu Nov 18, 2004 3:26 am

Here Monker, just for you - LOL

Even though I enjoy posting just Dennis information here, I thought I'd pass this Styx information to those who follow the new line-up. One of my Dennis friends found the info

Styx (news | CDs | auctions) plans to release its version of The Beatles' classic "I Am the Walrus" on Dec. 7 exclusively through Apples iTunes Music Store. The group recorded the song on Sept. 11 in Lincoln City, OR.

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 2004--Styx's version of the classic Beatles song "I Am The Walrus" has hit the Top Ten on the Mediabase Classic Rock chart within two weeks of the song's (date) release. The single will debut to consumers worldwide exclusively through Apple's iTunes Music Store beginning December 7.

When Styx was invited to participate in Eric Clapton's Crossroads benefit earlier this year, they changed up their set to include blues songs, such as their newly recorded version of their hit "Blue Collar Man," as well as "I Am The Walrus." The audience response to the Styx-styled version was overwhelming, leading to the group's decision to include the single as a staple to their set lists at future shows.

"After attending our Chicago homecoming performance at Vic Theater back in August, WLUP Program Director Greg Solk requested a live recording of Walrus to play on the air," said James "JY" Young. "There was definitely a groundswell happening with the song. We love playing it on stage, and the audience loves it."

Tommy Shaw added, "Just as we thought our year was winding down, we find ourselves in full response mode as this rocking track keeps climbing up the charts. Jim Ladd told JY and me, 'You guys captured lightning in a bottle...' Frankly we're pleasantly stunned by how little we've had to do with its success at radio."
Styx's Live Walrus Recording to Debut on iTunes; Styx's Version of ``I Am The Walrus'' Hits Top 10 on Classic Rock Charts

Styx recorded the song on September 11th in Lincoln City, Oregon and it aired on WLUP on October 8th, followed by a West Coast debut broadcast by radio host Jim Ladd on KLOS. In just three weeks, the song is being played on more than 120 stations. Apart from WLUP and KLOS, the single has been added at KQRS in Minneapolis, WFBQ in Indianapolis, KSAN in San Francisco, KDBN in Dallas, WKLS in Atlanta, WNCX in Cleveland, KISM in Seattle, KKLZ in Las Vegas, WARW in Washington, D.C., KIHT in St. Louis, WMFO in Boston, WEGR in Memphis, and WONE in Akron, to name a few.

The song debuted at #24 on the Mediabase Classic Rock chart and jumped to #10 a week later. The band is putting finishing touches on a video for the song that includes a cameo by Billy Bob Thornton.

so, someone correct me if I am wrong on any of the following points.....

If I want to own a copy of "Walrus" my only option is to run out to a local store, but one of those ipod things, learn how to use it, then go to Apple computers itunes site and download it ?

dont they know I'm over 40 years old ? ( it'll never happen..... )

Maybe I can get one of the late night DJ's to play it, and record it on my castette deck off of the radio....we still have FM stations where I live, I think......

And don't forget the one released to all the newly added Spanish-language stations.

"El hombre que tiene la camisa azul"

They had to do an approximate translation, but the song rocks with that mariachi band backup.

You do not need an iPod to use iTunes. You can download iTunes for free. You can import all of your cds and any other music that you have on your computer into the iTunes program. If you ever buy an iPod all of your music can easly be copied to it. I have over 7000 songs on my iPod so far. Most of them coming from my CD and LP collection. I have puchesed some songs from iTunes but I only buy the songs from a CD that I like. Each song is 0.99 and most CDs are 9.99. You can also burn CDs from the iTunes program. I am in my 40s and I love the iPod. I play it through my car radio most of the time. When I put it on Shuffle play it is like your own radio station that only plays your songs.

The version is terrible
They ruin Styx now they want to ruin Beatles tunes
What a joke
Any band could cover this song and it would sound no better

Froy,

I'm not a Beattles fan. I do know the orginal Beattles version of 'I Am A Walrus' and I dont like it. I'm sure I wont care that much for the new Styx version either. I REALLY REALLY want to hear it though. What I do know is you are SOOOO BITTER that Dennis is no longer in Styx your opinions are a joke. The current Styx could come out with songs that are better than Stairway To Heaven, Hey Jude, Come Sail Away, Renegade, etc and you would say they all suck.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didnt Dennis do an ENTIRE CD of covers?? Didnt Dennis perform the song Fire on Desert Moon, wasnt that Hendrix?? Didnt Styx remake the song What has Come Between Us ? Wasnt that Dennis on lead vocal for that song?? Guess what Froy? almost all groups do remakes of other peoples songs. I havent heard it yet but it sure sounds like Styx must of done an OUTSTANDING one. This possibly could be their new Lady or Walk This Way. Stranger things have happened.

While you are passing the time you ought to apply for a job reviewing songs and CD's for Rolling Stone. If you are luckey maybe they will let you review Styx's next CD. I forgot according to you they are DEAD. Keep the reviews coming Froy. Your opinion is soooooooo respected around here!!!!!

My prediction for what is next: Due to the success of I am the Walrus, Styx will release a live version of Manic Depression from Hendrix that will also chart. The success of these two songs will give the next new material album access to the air waves.

[quote="yogi"]Froy,

I'm not a Beattles fan.

Than you don't know what good music is,

What I do know is you are SOOOO BITTER that Dennis is no longer in Styx your opinions are a joke.

No Yogi I am bitter that JY and Shaw have all but made the Styx name laughable. Doing a remake of a Beatles tune to get on the radio is really the sign of a band who will try just about anything.
I made a joke but really what is next Stairway Free Bird Satisfaction
And one more thing how can you say my opinion is a joke when you have not even heard the damm song.?

The current Styx could come out with songs that are better than Stairway To Heaven, Hey Jude, Come Sail Away, Renegade, etc and you would say they all suck.

Not a chance in hell they could come out with anything to match what you just listed. NOT A CHANCE IN HELL Get off your soap box.
This current Styx band stinks..

Correct me if I am wrong, but didnt Dennis do an ENTIRE CD of covers?? Didnt Dennis perform the song Fire on Desert Moon, wasnt that Hendrix??

Sure but he did not do it in desperation to get on the radio
And Dennis is not the issue here
He's not calling himself STYX.

Didnt Styx remake the song What has Come Between Us ? Wasnt that Dennis on lead vocal for that song?? Guess what Froy? almost all groups do remakes of other peoples songs.

Not Beatle songs
Do you see JRNY doing Houses of The Holy or Shook Me ALL Night Long just to get noticed and on the radio
No way this was done in desperation and it failed once again
Everything this current lineup tries fails yesterday today and tommorow
It over for Styx and there fans.

Froy,

It is a bit ironic that Dennis uses the tag line of "performing the music f Styx" Doesn't that infer his relationship to the band, if not their band's music.

Rush put out an EP of covers last year that did ok, but not great. And it was pushed heavily by the label.

And they actually had no intention of releasing IATW, but they were asked for it by the Loop after they saw them do it in concert. It wasn't an act of desperation, it was clearly a case of providing a radio station with what they wanted. Any band would grab onto that opportunity if they got it.

If memory serves me correctly, several artists have recorded Beatles songs which not only were played on the airwaves, but made into videos:

Billy Joel - Back to the USSR
Aerosmith - Come Together
Michael Jackson - Come Together...

I wasn't under the impression that those songs were released in desperation by those artists to get air time, nor do I feel Styx release of "I am the Walrus" is either. I believe I read on Styxs' website that they were asked to do a live version to play on the radio. (I apologize that I am not quoting the remark verbatim). Can't blame them at all. I listened to the their version earlier today (thanks to StyxfanNH) and thought it was great.

I'm happy that Styx is getting some recognition regardless of who is in the band!

You have got to be the most bitter fan in Styxdom.

The fact is that Journey recorded "It's All Too Much" on one of their first few albums. The fact is also that they cover Hendrix in concert...which seems to be about as much of an influence to Neal as the Beatles are to Tommy.

As for them 'failing'....you are just upset that the FACT is that they ARE on radio. The one who sounds desperate here is YOU not Styx.

Everything this current lineup tries fails yesterday today and tommorow
It over for Styx and there fans.

Sure, whatever. And, I'm sure you'll say that next year while they are touring in support of their new album....and the year after that, and the year after that...just as you always have:

Gowan is not a member of STYX and we are calling for his termination forth with . After the remaining dates of this current tour the issues with Dennis have to be rectified or the fans will start an internet boycott of STYX 3.6.or whatever name Tommy has labeled them. Now don't get me wrong I respect Tommy Dennis an JY but I will never see this current lineup perform. No problem with that

The fact is that Journey recorded "It's All Too Much" on one of their first few albums.

Means nothing the band was not even known at the time.
Its not the problem of doing covers it s the problem of them using it to get on the radio . They have no new material so they do a beatle tune
How lame,

The fact is also that they cover Hendrix in concert...which seems to be about as much of an influence to Neal as the Beatles are to Tommy.

Did JRNY release Purple Haze Monker I don't think so
Neal just does a few Hendrix riffs big deal/

As for them 'failing'....you are just upset that the FACT is that they ARE on radio.

No Im upset there screwing around with Beatle songs to get recognized.
Funny thing nobody even plays the song an ymore.
But Shaw say's theres a music video on the way

SOME Styx fans may laugh. Some Styx fans laughed at Kilroy, Eotc, and BNW too...and some think Dennis' solo career is laughable. Some Styx fans liked those years too. Big deal.

After all the years of your whining, complaining, insults, hate, and prophecies of doom, Styx are still out there...touring, recording new music...and even getting on the radio. JY should be the person laughing - at people like you who just don't understand that music is bigger then one persons opinion or even a small group of people's shared opinion.

The affects of your boycott are laughable. Your attempt at getting 10,000 signitures on a petition to get Dennis back in Styx was laughable. The entire crusade to end the current band is laughable.

Styx will continue as long as venues book them for a tour. The fact that they can still book a tour doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon...despite your protests.

Froy has been predicting Styx "will be over very soon" for YEARS now. Over and over. You can probably look it up on this site, if there are archives, but who cares? It's so ridiculous.

Guess what? There are a number of people - some with families - who have been hired by Styx, working steadily, paying bills, probably getting RAISES...buying properties and starting side businesses...amply compensated by their employers...SINCE 1999. Do the math.

Why? How could this be? Because people keep coming to Styx concerts. You HAVE TO ACCEPT - just like the pissed off John Kerry voters (half our nation) - that people are supporting this band in droves, year after year.

Is it unfortunate Dennis is no longer in the band? Perhaps. But your little tribute band enthusiasm is laughable, in light of the type of live touring business that's been taking place for FIVE F#@&ING YEARS.

Is it unfortunate that they haven't had hits? Of course. But there has probably been more output in the past 5 years (from Styx AND DeYoung) than the previous TWELVE YEARS.

Get over it, dude. Styx currently has a live cover track that's getting airplay on a radio format that almost NEVER plays anything new, Classic Rock.

This morning upon hearing Fooling Yourself being played I called 93.7 The Arrow ( Houston ) to request I Am The Walrus. I talked to one of their morning guys Deen or Rag off the air. They did not have the song yet, but they said they would look into it. I then talked to one of their program directors, I told him to look on Styx's website, Melodic rock. com etc. I told him it was already being played at numerous Big Market stations around the country, including one in Dallas.

I then gave him my cell number, after he told me he would look into the matter. They ( the station ) are huge Styx fans. They had a big promo giving away tickets for the Rock & Roll Cruise. Since 1999, they have brought Styx to Houston numerous times as the headline act of Arrowfest which has always been in the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Its a 15,000 seat venue and its always sold very well.

Anyway, I just got a call back from 93.7 from a secretary( Jada?) thanking me for the info, and telling me it would be added to their morning playlist as early as next Monday.
