The point is this:

I doubt there is a single "classic rock band" that did not do covers at some point in their careers. In fact, some of them did it at the PEAK of the careers. Some of those songs are what they are most remembered for. Elvis, Led Zepellin, the Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Hendrix, the Beatles, Van Halan, Guns and Roses - ALL OF THEM DID COVER SONGS.

The fact is that in the early days of rock, most bands DID NOT EVEN WRITE THEIR OWN SONGS. Some bands, like Led Zeppelin, ripped off

You are making a big issue about something that is very insignificant. Some people will buy it, some won't...but %99 of the population of the world don't care one way or the other.

I think it's a mistake because I'm a selfish bastard and would rather have newly written songs that I have never heard before then Styx covering something that has already been written. It is simply more interesting to me and I think new songs would be more interesting to any Styx fan.

What is your excuse? In your eyes, I doubt Styx could do the right thing anyway. If they released an album of new songs, you would probably be saying it was a mistake and they should have followed it up with an album of cover songs. The only "right" decision Styx could do in your opinion is bring back Dennis - which is not going to happen.

Toto are still around...........I seen them in 2003 where they done 2 songs from their covers release, A Bob Marley number and While My Guitar Gently Weeps by George Harrison or as it should of read with Steve Lukather playing it WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY SHREDS....awesome guitarist......The bands cover album apparently outsold their last studio CD 2 to 1 worldwide.

2. Heart Full Of Soul
3. The Seeker Listen
4. For What It’s Worth
5. Shapes Of Things
6. Mr. Soul

8. Seven And Seven Is

By the way on Amazon it ranks: #1,821 as of this posting.

Cyclorama is at #65,048
Dennis DeYoung's double live cd is at #4,362

Hey, everyone have a GREAT night!!!!

Froy Demands: “Now show me an entire cd full of covers by a classic rock act that has sold 4 platinum cds or better”

Adam, Eager To Please The Task Master, Hops To: Yes Sir, Doctor Froy! Anything you ask! (Not that facts will make a difference)

After exploding on the scene in 1972 (Space Oddity, Changes, Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars), and after his Aladdin Sane (Jean Genie), which also went through the roof, and his timeless appearance doing a duet with Bing Crosby (look him up – a MAJOR PLAYER in the music biz), Bowie released an album ENTIRELY OF COVERS titled PIN UPS in 1973.

Oh, and Froy, Bowie has sold many more records than Styx.

I seriously thought that Styx sold more records than Bowie over the years. I sure learn something new every day on here :)

I know Def Leppard fans hated this project.
Aerosmith I know they did Come Together for the SGT Pepper Bee Gees Movie but have no clue about a cover cd.
Thats how famous that was
Ozzy had no idea he did a cover cd can't name 1 song
Toto the same have heard nothing about it.

the other acts I don't even know anything about them.

The point is a cover cd is a filler project STYX never did filler projects
They always came up with something original
To me a cover cd is a step in the wrong direction
They would have been better off taking a rest .

I just do not see the problem anyone is having with a CD of covers. As has been listed here, at great length, it is NOTHING new with a great many singers and bands.

The fact the Neo-Styx is doing it is just not that big a deal. It has brought them into a new facet of their career, some believe it is good, some believe it is bad.

Whether is brings them up, down, or sideways, it is simply something they, and their handlers, record company, etc. feel might keep them in the spotlight a little longer.

If it works, and sells product, good. If not, they will try something else.

They are performers and, like Dennis, they want to perform. Period.

DDY's CD has been in the 1000 range for quite some time. It has dropped somewhat. It has been doing pretty well on Amazon for an album that has been available, in a limited way, for over a year now.

We shall see where the covers CD lands in a few months.

Anyone know how Walrus is doing on iTunes?

Not that Froy would know him, but John Farnham too. Actually, the best CD that Steve Perry never recorded.

Ah, I see...so rerecording "Lady" for another GH was "something original"?

I'll tell you what, I'd rather see Styx release a covers CD then another pointless compilation.

You are funny...you go on some goofy challenge insisting that no classic rock band releases cover CD's...telling people to hit Google...Then, when you are proven wrong - YOUR POINT COMPLETELY CHANGES!

A fellow from Germany,"James Last " has made a living of making cover versions of a shitload of stuff. When I was a kid in Denmark(in the 70es),he would be on the top 10 all the time, with some party album. He is still going strong.I remember him doing a rendition of Hawkwinds Silver Machine. He must have done everything but Styx and Dennis. So it is not impossible to make a cover or 1000 .
I think I might just have to look him up on google. He must have at least 75 albums.Yes no maybe.Check him out.

Come on Monker you know they did it because they could not get the rights from Wooden Nickle .

Ozzy is not a classic rock band
Toto is not a classic rock band
Bowie is not a classic rock band
Helween well who the hell knows who they are
Def Leppard is some what a classic rock band and there cover cd almost ruined the band.
Rush is the only one I know of and they regret the idea,
Aerosmith I never saw a cover cd.

So from this point forward you have no problem with STYX doing one cover cd after another .
Every year they can pick out 10 cover songs to rerecord and then go on tour to play the songs on stage.
Is this what you want from STYX ?
Styx covers volume 1 2 3 4 5
You are happy with them no matter what they do as long as they do something is that what you are saying?
For the rest of there career they can just copy other bands.
Im sorry I think its a stupid idea maybe thats why Im not a STYX fan anymore, I never agree with anything they do.

Funny knowbody cares to answer this one.

I remember Bowie's album.

Eric Clapton did 2 albums of blues standards. and they sold very well.

Rod Stewart has just released his second album of covers because the first one did very well. And it has revitalized his career.

Oh, oh, let me guess Froy's argument here:

Clapton is not a classic rock band. He's a solo artist, not a band...like Cream or something.

Rod Stewart? He hasn't sung rock music in 10yrs or so. Talk about a Barry Manilow wannabe! Covering songs from 70yrs ago is not the same as covering songs from 35yrs ago. Besides, I saw him on South Park and looks almost dead.

I take that back. Rod Stewart is just about to release his 3rd volume of the "Great America Songbook" series.

The Ramones released "Acid Eaters" - All covers

Joan Jett released "The Hit List" - All covers

Jerry Garcia released "Garcia" - All covers

Geoff Downes from Asia released "Evolution" - All covers

Joe Cocker released "Heart and Soul" - All covers

Duran Duran released "Thank You" - All covers

Yngwie J Malmsteen released "Inspiration" - All covers

Rage Against the Machine released "Renegades" - All covers

Lyle Lovett released "Step Inside This House" - All covers

The list goes on and on.

So, as you can see, this is not that unusual

And what about "10 on Broadway"?
