Musicians and Performers

Postby bugsymalone » Sat Feb 19, 2005 5:33 am

Seriously, I bet there are a lot of frustrated ex-musician types amongst the posters here.

This quote from Classic and the discussion on the other thread with Zan and Classic have given me an idea for a new topic.

This may have been covered before, but it was long before I became a member, so I will ask here.

Who among our esteemed and elite posters is a musician? What instrument/instruments do you play? Are you in a band? Are you currently, or were you in a past life, a performer?

I will start --- I play guitar. Have for a long time. I used to play in a folk rock group and then as a performer in some folk duos in college.
Nothing big-time. Small clubs for beers and a chance to play.

I still pull out the old 12-string occasionally but not much anymore.

I'm currently singing in a classic rock cover band here in South Florida. I've been with them for nearly 18 months. I recently briefly sang for an original band that was supposedly set to go on a tour with the BBS Allstars, James Taylor, and Steve Winwood, but...that's a whole long story. I'm happier here near my loved ones being more "relaxed."

Once upon a time, I played the flute for 3 years, but I don't even think I can get any sound to come out of it now. LOL

I use to play the flute, a very little bit of the acoustic guitar, and a 'whole-lotta-singing-out-loud' to no one in particular!

And a special hello to my somewhere-near neighbor Zan. I live in my own city-by-the-bay, Tampa!

Bugs, I sort of answered this on the other thread.......I will add that I know a few chords on the ol' acoustic guitar, but wouldnt want to embarras myself by performing with it.

How fun would it be to have a Melodicrock Styx board "all star jam" ?

All together now.......

Sorry, I can't play any instruments, I can't sing (trust me), I can't dance (LOL), but I can film the MelodicRock Styx Board "all-star jam".

I can get my film crew together, set up the interviews and film the concert, that's all I can offer

This is Off-Topic:

By the way, you all know how I enjoy bragging (see tag-line), last night I co-hosted a show and interviewed Mark Metcalf. The name might not sound familiar, but he's been in a lot of shows & movies. He played Doug Neidermeyer in "Animal House" and also the same character in 2 Twisted Sister videos, he also played the character "the Maestro" in 2 Seinfeld episodes and he played "The Master" in the Buffy Vampire series. Great guy and very down to earth. After taping my husband ( a heavy metal guy) and him were talking about Dee Snider, another nice guy.

Way back when in high school, I played French Horn, Tympani, and a whole host of assorted percussion instruments.

After that I worked for a major musical instruments chain in the northeast for four years and hacked my way through some keyboards and guitar and did some time learning recording and PA work. Have worked with some small bands that went nowhere.

Now I'm a computer teacher working with drama and music departments within schools improving on the technical part of the production and recording some of their performances with what little equipment we have.

I play bass guitar in a classic rock band. We play out about 3-4 times a month. Unfortunately, we don't play any STYX.

Very cool, David! Too bad we don't live closer - I'd love to come hear you guys play. My band's website is www.carouselband.net but I see it's MIA at the moment. WTF? Anyway.... I'm trying to get them to link some .wav files or mp3s, but I've had no luck as of yet - maybe that's because the website has passed on. :-\ I really must learn how to do these things myself. LOL...I'll have to listen to your files on Tuesday when I have access to a better internet connection. Damn dsl "lite." Glorified dial-up. :x

3-4 times a month is pretty good! Carousel does typically 2-3, which is substantially more than we used to. It used to be, if we had a gig every 8 weeks or so, we were happy. Hopefully we'll be able to keep moving forward. Good luck to you as well.

I still play (drums) - but now only for my own pleasure - and to stay in shape.
I was in a Band (Looking for Dave) that had marginal success in the mid - eighties. The year before we broke up - we toured the mid-west with as the opening act for- your going to love this one - Queensryche.
Ahhhhhhh - the memories.
I still have the same kit - Pearl Export with DW 6000 pedals and K's all around.

I've played piano and drums over time.

However I am most proficient at my current instrument... the "Air Guitar"... I'm EXCEPTIONAL at that if I do say so myself. In fact I can even "Air Guitar" and "Lip Synch" at the SAME TIME... which is a feat that few other humans can do... but thanks to my God given ability and superhuman strength I am able to........

oh...... am I saying this outloud?

Queensryche is teh shit... at least they were until their "Hear In The Now Frontier" record....

Now I'm just praying to god they don't destroy another facet of my childhood by butchering the upcoming sequel to Operation Mindcrime. I don't know if can mentally handle Dennis out of Styx and a butchered Mindcrime part II in the same ten year span.

You know, Ash, I play a "real" guitar but find a broom and some loud music on while one is at home (hopefully) alone can approximate a great air guitar show right in your own living room!

And for outdoor venues, a leaf rake plus my mp3 player and some earphones make for a really interesting sight to behold should one be observing the "show" from a distance.

And I needed a laugh this morning. Thanks!

I did some singing, guitar, and violin in grade school and high school. The singing I've kept up with...the others...sadly no.

I was rocking out to some tune eons ago doing the whole lip synch/air guitar thing.... in my office after everyone left.... As I was getting to the bridge/guitar solo, one of my employees came back to pick up something they forgot... I had my back to the door and did not (initially) see them.... this was most unfortunate

That's one of those embarrassing moments that gets SEERED into your memory so that everytime you think about it you get one of those queasy feelings like you're hoping the earth would just open up and swallow you.
