Here are a few interesting ( at least to me ) sentances from the liner Notes included with the new release "The complete Wooden Nickel recordings:

"When the musicians couldn't agree on a new name, Traut asked a friend to compile a list of 100 potential handles, from which he suggested Styx.........The Musicians agreed to Traut's suggestion."


Although he would leave the band before it achieved widespread fame, Curulewski was, according to Traut, " a very important factor in constructing Styx's early sound. He was a very good idea guy, and he came up with a lot of great stuff."

Equally offbeat was Curulewski's bizarrely theatrical Krakatoa which incorporated a striking electronic riff.........Many years later that passage would be used by filmmaker George Lucas as the sonic logo for his THX theatre sound system.

Holy crap!

I've heard that "sonic logo" probably 6-8 separate times in the theatre before a movie with THX, and never made the connection ! I'll be paying more attention when I see Star Wars episode 3 later this year , that's for sure !

My kids think I'm crazy. Because whenever I hear that sound effect at the beginning of a movie, I start to sing the Alleluia Chorus.

Note: This was not "Curulewski's ...electronic riff." It came from, to quote from the liner notes further "the pioneering duo Beaver and Krause, hence their credit as co-writers."

It was unclear if the passage used for the THX Soundsystem in theaters was the Styx version (or, I suppose, Curulewski on Synth) or Beaver and Krause.

I know it always gives me chills to hear it in the theater as it fires up all around you.

Bugsy is correct.......I was more impressed by the fact that Music from a Styx LP was being used for this purpose, and neglected the portion of the paragraph that dealt with writing credits.

I wonder if it is directly off of the Styx recording, or if Lucas had it re-recorded ? I also wonder if the writers ( including JC's heirs ) receive any sort of stipend for it's use ? That of itself might be enough cash to sustain a family for a few years !
