BACK IN BLACK: The classic lineup of Judas Priest (left) will hit the road with Queensryche. Double billing is popular this year.

Last year, the average cost of a rock show rose to $58.71 - a 13 percent increase from 2003 - leading some to joke that Alan Greenspan or the OPEC cartel were somehow to blame.

This year, the concert industry is taking drastic steps to make music lovers feel welcome again. Some of those measures include revamping customer service and finding ways to improve the concertgoer's experience. More significant are moves to slash ticket prices.

So what went wrong last year? Blame the overly optimistic - some would say greedy - promoters for overestimating how much audiences would be willing to pay for a night out. "The industry doesn't have a list price so everybody looks at what everyone else is doing and then assumes they can do that or better," says Gary Bongiovanni, editor in chief of Pollstar, the industry bible. "Clearly that wasn't the case last year and many of the tours overpriced themselves."

For the most part it was "mid-level" acts that overreached, but superstars like Madonna faltered, too. During her 2004 tour, the Queen of Pop charged her loyal subjects an average fealty of $175 per seat - a record in the business. Though her tour was profitable, Madonna struggled to sell seats with a $300 price tag.

Now Clear Channel, the country's largest concert promoter, is taking action to lower the face value of tickets on its end. The company, which was unable to provide an executive for comment, announced that it will no longer charge a "facility fee" at its amphitheaters.

Artists are taking some steps of their own to shore up sales by giving consumers more bands for their buck. Many musicians are resorting to the tried and true tactic of linking up with other groups that appeal to a similar demographic. Stevie Nicks and Don Henley are headlining a tour, as are Boston/Styx, Oasis/Jet, Judas Priest/Queensryche, and Def Leppard/Bryan Adams. There are also rumors of blockbuster pairings such as Audioslave/System of a Down, Van Halen/Aerosmith, and Kenny Chesney/Gretchen Wilson.

"People are a little bit gun-shy after last year, so there's nothing wrong with co-headlining with someone or building up your bill to offer more value," says Mr. Waddell. In all, he is optimistic that the industry can overcome its problems. "It's nothing that a hot tour, priced right, can't overcome."

Boston's Kimberley Dahme will also be opening for Glen Burtnik in Atlanta with an acoustic show. Should be great!

I had heard this rumor a couple of weeks ago. But I couldn't find anything to confirm it.

This is a double bill that I would really like to see. I just wonder when it is going to start? Styx seem to be booked pretty solid through the summer and Boston never seem to have dates posted until the last minute.

I have also heard that Fran and Anthony Cosmo from Boston are releasing an album and touring on their own.

So what's up with that?

Why would the Cosmo's be releasing an album and touring on their own? Well I guess an album every 8 years and the tour every three years philosophy of Tom Scholz gives the other band members alot of free time if they intend to stick with the band.

I know that Anthony Cosmo was in the band, Downers Revenge, which did a test market of sorts for some of the 'Corporate America' songs. (If you have the Corporate America album there is a photo of Kimberly Dahme sitting on a blue cooler that has Downers Revenge written on it.

As a side note in addition to being a fantastic singer, Kimberly Dahme is REALLY easy on the eyes too. (Cue sexist comments :D ). Just another reason to catch Glen in Atlanta if you have the chance.

Hey Froy, Happy Easter. Hope the bunny brought a nice neon colored egg that said aloha to your a-hola. Listen up maggot, DDY is a hack, a has-been, and habenero. You on the other hand are none of the above because to become a hack and a has-been, one has to have had talent to begin with. Now as far as your discreet relationship with Zan, I'm sure you two have already squeezed each other's genitalia to Desert Moon on a number of occasions. Styx are Styx and DDY is crap. While Dennis can continue playing Arby's, Quiznos, and CVS, Styx regularly play REAL venues and make actual albums on actual labels while DDY releases albums on Roast Beef Records.

Whoa! That was a bit out of line...

If froy wants to date Zan, that's their business. I hope he doesn't hurt Suite's feelings tho! Who knows, maybe he's seeing Sadie behind all of their backs. That froy really gets around.

Even if you hate froy, I don't see why you have to insult Zan. What did she do other then give away some concert tickets? Are you jealous that you are a bit late and didn't get a seat close to Zan?

And, be fair to DDY. He's not playing Arby's and Quiznos. Maybe if they start serving froglegs, they'll get his attention.

You are wasting your time on someone who obviously doesn't know how to read. The fact that he has tagged me as a DeYoung "master baiter" says it all. Yeah, that's me all over...LOL

I like fast food...the burgers always taste the same.

First, I don't know why any of you have to feed the troll. Hopefully he'll be gone. It would be nice if Andrew can get rid of him and his posts!!

Second, nobody hates anybody on here. "Hate" is such a strong word.

Third, Froy's a really nice guy. Every one in our party, even my Current Carrot Styx & Tommy Fan friend had a really nice time.

Fourth, I'm sure Zan would have a great conversation with Froy  (oh and my feelings won't be hurt, thanks Monker for thinking about my feelings, I really appreciate it)

Fifth, when people cut each other down on here, they're just jealous and they don't know how to have fun!!

I hope every one has a GREAT day!!!!

Still waiting for any news that this tour is really going to happen.

The Boston Globe made a reference to it recently

http://www.boston.com/news/globe/living ... +Arts+News

But I don't see anywhere in STYX schedule that this could happen until fall.
