Cornerstone

Since I have moved out to the country, going anywhere requires semi-long drives in the ol' F-150. Anyway, I listen to LOTS of music on CD when I drive.

Where is this going, you say?

OK, I listened to Cornerstone just yesterday and I must say this is simply one terrific album in so many ways. I cannot imagine not having it in your collection of you collect Classic Styx music.

There are only 3, well, make that 2 1/2 songs I don't care for: First Time, Eddie and Babe would be the half because I don't hate it, just am tired of it.

Everything else on it is just steller Styx IMO. I think the whole CD is worth owning for Tommy's Love in the Midnight. Lights, Why Me, Borrowed Time, Never Say Never and Boat on the River are all superb songs.

That is a lot of good music, folks.

Bugsy's .02 this morning.

You don't like "Eddie"?!

That's one of my favs on the CD! Killer JY tune !

But I agree, Cornerstone is a good solid CD. I'd rank it as one of their better CD's.

Overall, I like this CD. I usually skip over Why Me and First Time, and that's about it. Sometimes I pass on Babe and Boat On The River, not because I don't like them, but because I've heard them more than the other songs.

I'll be the voice of descent ( sp? ) on this thread......Cornerstone was a let down for me, and I have to be in just the right mood to pull it out/dust it off.....I consider it the first LP Styx released that was a major step BACKWARDS from the previous release ( in the A&M era )

It's a good LP that has the misfortune of being released after 4 Great LP's in a Row. Thus, it did not live up to my expectations of the band.

While I dont think its near as good as Equinox, The Grand Illusion, and Pieces Of Eight I like it much better than Paradise Theatre and much much much better than Crystal Ball.

I'll Take Jennifer, This Old Man, and Put Me On

over

First Time, Babe and Eddie any day of the week !

and I'll Take Crystal Ball and Sweet Madamoiselle over any 2 TS cuts on Cornerstone........but that's just me.

Eddie is the best JY song ever. The lyric is great and the musicianship he demonstrates on this song alone is simply outstanding. This song is -BY FAR- the best work of his career.

Plus... I hate Ted Kennedy.... so I like it just that much more. :)

I don't know if they were trying to do disco or what. But about half of the album sounds like one big long boring song to me.

We're in agreement again, although I might take Lights over Mademoiselle.

In my opinion, Styx' best run of music (on consecutive albums) is found on Equinox-Pieces Of Eight. Since then, Paradise Theatre and Cyclorama are the only ones that come close (IMHO).

I will Take Cornerstone over:

Kilroy, Brave New World, and Styx (1)

and, it's 6 of 1 - 1/2 dozen of the other with:

Edge, Serpent and Man of Miracles........

Oh, I love Cornerstone!! I now I mentioned it before in posts how each album/cd means something special to me :)

I love most of the songs especially "Why Me", "Lights", "Boat on The River" and more than ever "Borrowed Time"!!

When I listen to this cd, I really can't hear the "disco" music - LOL, I'll have to play it again today.

When I was younger it was "neat" to find out the meaning of the album cover - LOL I wish that article was still up and running from the magazine 16.

Hey Classic and Yogi,

After Pieces of Eight, just about anything was gonna be a letdown.

I need to make a JY songs thread here. But Eddie, to me,is nowhere near his best work with Styx.

I think musically, Cornerstone matches up well with most of Styx' other recordings. No, it is no Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight and what I think is their best recording, Equinox, but it has some wonderful, listenable music that I go back to time and again.

Cornerstone is very good, A-, if I must grade it. I like all the songs, with Never Say Never, being ok  . More of a pop sound than any other cd. But that is the good thing about Styx, all cds have a different mood to them, but still sound like Styx-ERIC

The song Eddie was written about Teddy Kennedy and his possible run for president in 1980.

Eddie now don't you run
You know you're a bootlegger's son
and you saw just what it's done
to the others

Eddie now don't you run
it's the end of all your fun
and you saw just what they've done
to your brothers

it's probably the weakest album pre-Kilroy.........but having said that it's still a great album. :D

Yes, but this song is also pointing out while running for president or even becoming president that he would take the chance of suffering the same fate as his brothers and other presidents....
