I heard a new song by Sammy Hagar last night on the Loop in Chicago. “I’ll Take You There” originally done by the Staple Singers in the 70s. And the covers just keep on coming!

And last Sunday when I was watching A&E's Breakfast with the arts, they replayed John Mellencamp promoting his cover album from 2 years ago. He said in the interview portion that Columbia had seen him perform a song in his live show and THEY APPROACHED HIM, to do a covers album of similar music. Seems like a trend that the record companies are pushing bands to make cover albums as has been reported by Styx. Coincidentally, it can't hurt the sales of the original material.

Separate note: John Mellencamp is touring this summer with John Fogerty.

Same seems to be true of Hollywood. Notice all the remakes like "Manchurian Candidate" or TV series based feature films like the upcoming "Bewitched" out there right now? It's almost as if the producers are more willing to risk their money on old ideas instead of new ones.

There is also no coincidence that the series DVD's are being released the week before Bewitched hits the theaters and that there is a free ticket in the box

What's filler about doing a cover? What IS filler?

"Filler" is dictated by opinions. There is no way to PROVE that ANY SONG is a filler. One man's filler is another man's favorite track.

I have NO problem with covers recordings. Some are wonderful, some are good, and some are just....there.

The clips I have heard from Current Styx sound good.

I think it depends on the artist or artists and their loyal fan base. I think Rod was successful because he is hugely popular and his fan base has grown up and, well, ok, old with him. These 3 standards covers CD's he did are a natural progression.

Occasionally an artist can bring in a additonal number of buyers and fan converts by the material he or she (or they) choose to cover. I think Rod likely did that with these cover recordings he did.

Rod Stewart didn't just do a covers disc... he did an American Standards disc... old songs of a completely different genre than the one that he normally performs within.

Just because it sells doesn't mean it's good... that stuff is schlock. Nothing more... nothing less.

All these covers discs are just the 2000's version of the 90s "unplugged" albums. Everyone wanted to cash in on that trend and did.

I didn't make that judgment. I was simply saying that as Rod has gotten older, he saw a way to sort of stay relevant. So he did the "standards" and, apparently someone liked those recordings. They certainly sold well.

And I agree. It is the trendy thing for older artists to be doing now.

Filler is a project that puts the act on the road till new material is written/

Froy I alot of times agree with some of the things you say, but what is the difference of a person or a band wants to do a caover cd? Its what that person or band wants, or is it what you wnat or don't want? I'm not saying that in a mean way, just wanting to undersatnd your thinking on that, the whole "band" doing a cover cd.-ERIC

Dennis is not a band so it is OK. He never was a band and he never will be a band. He may have been a member of a band, but he himself is not a band. He is just a writer that plays/performs with other musicians. If that makes any sense. NOT.

I never hasd a real opportunity to see it, but I bet DDY gave an awe inspiring performance as Pontious Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar...

I wouldnt mind hearing a recording of that entire show some day.

I saw it! It was bee-utiful! neener :-p

A good friend of mine told me a story about seeing DDY in "Jesus Christ Superstar."

She went with a fellow DDY/Styx fan. Both were very nervous because the audience had its share of fans like them, it also had people who had no idea who Dennis was and, reading from their programs, probably wondered just who this guy thought he was.

When Dennis hit the first note of the first song as Pilate, both she, her friend, and the entire audience was pinned against the wall with the power of his vocals. Add to that that he did a very credible job of acting the part and he came away leaving people with a very positive impression and experience.

She and her friend were both relieved about, and in awe of, his performance. He did not disappoint.
