Styx song - Movies & TV

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Thu Apr 14, 2005 8:40 am

The movie "The Perfect Man" is coming out this summer. Hopefully it will still feature the 4 songs.

This movie should be interesting especially one of the main characters is a huge Styx fan

I was thinking of all the movies, television & commercials that a Styx song or reference has been made. Here is my little list. I'm sure I don't have everything, if anyone knows any more information, please add to the list.

Other movies:

Big Daddy ("Babe" "Best of Times")
Virgin Suicides ("Come Sail Away")
Atlantis ("Come Sail Away" Promo)
8 Crazy Nights
Detroit Rock City
Old School

Television - either songs were played, mentioned or Styx was mentioned.

Will & Grace - mentions "Grand Illusion" (Bugsy, was that right?)
That 70's Show - mentions Styx throughout the show "Grand Illusion"
Joey - Promo with "Mr. Roboto" playing
SouthPark - Cartman singing "Come Sail Away"
Freaks & Geeks - "Lady", "Renegade" & "Come Sail Away" (Soundtrack)
ER
Ed
Still Standing
The King of Queens

Commercials:

VW - "Mr. Roboto"
Heineken - "Renegade"

TV - Cold Case - Showed "Paradise Theater" poster and we could hear "Best of Times" playing.

On Will and Grace, you heard a portion of "Grand Illusion" played.

Commercials - "Lady" for California cheese (What? Are ya prejudiced against the CALIFORNIA brand of cheese, Suite???? )

On the 'extras' of the Shrek 2 DVD, there is a "Far, Far Away Idol". Shrek , Fiona, and Simon judge. Pinochio sings a bit of Mr. Roboto. Shrek says his performance was a bit 'wooden'.

In one of the Austin Power's movies (maybe Goldmember?) - There is a bit where Austin is in the headquarters of Roboto industries in Japan. He talks to the owner and says, "Domo arigoto Mr. Roboto." (and if you look and/or care, there are giant Pokeballs in the background).

There are a couple scenes in South Park with Cartman and his "Come Sail Away" fetish. There is the one where he sings it at Chef Aid...and another where he mentions that if he hears the first line of the song, then he MUST sing the rest...Of course Stan and Kyle use this against him and start singing the song and Cartman does a 'speed sing' of the rest of it...because he MUST hear the rest. They do this several times to get Cartman to shut up.

On Saturday Night Live, there was a skit where Will Farrel and some lady do a bunch of lounge singing covers of pop songs. I know they did "Come Sail Away", and they may have done others.

Oh, Monker reminded me of SNL. There was also the famous Will Ferrell sketch where he played Dennis DeYoung and talked about career killing songs.

I would like to see it too, though the airing of this program was bad-timing personified. It aired the day that Dennis' father passed away. My guess is, Dennis would have found it amusing in another time and place.

The show was hosted by Nathan Lane and those SNL episodes show up all over cable/satellite channels all the time.

I have read the script transcript of it and it was gentle humor for the most part, and "Dennis" was in the company of some pretty high powered performers indeed.

Thanks Monker, my kids were just watching "Far, Far, Away Idol" the other day, I can't believe I forgot that LOL Also the Austin Powers too.

Thanks Bugsy too

My brother just sent me the video clip of Will Ferrell. Christopher Walken is the host and it's Behind The Music: BOC. It's with the cow bell. It's a funny one. I'll see if he can send me the other clip. He's pretty good at getting me these internet clips

I'll see what I can do.

There was also an SNL skit involving a trash radio DJ delivering the eulogy at a co-worker's (?) funeral. He ended his eulogy by giving away free tickets to the Styx Reunion tour.

Now this is the first I've heard of this one. I wouldn't mind seeing it myself. (Of course, I've never seen "Behind the Music", so I might miss any veiled references to the real thing.)

Styx has also been on The Simpsons at least three times.

(1) When Homer becomes the guy who catches the cannonball in his gut during lolapalooza, the show opens with him in a record store holding the 'Styx II' album he found in the "oldies bin". He tells the store worker "the zity teen they use all the time", that he had just heard Styx on the King Biscuit Flour Hour.

(2) When Homer has the 'Pin Pals' bowling team they are each making rhyming cheers for Otto. Homer's is Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto.

(3) The episode where Marge is teaching the kids about greek mythology she mentions the river Styx. The Scene cuts to Homer tied to a boat in hell while skeletons and demons are playing 'Lady'. Homer's response is "oh no, not this...ahhhhhh"
