If push really came to shove.......

Postby classicstyxfan » Sat Apr 16, 2005 12:47 pm

I occasionally wonder, both about myself, and about others here, what I would do, say or ask if I came face to face with any member of the band...

There are many here who talk a good game, but if JY or Tommy or Dennis, or whoever you take issue with was suddenly right in front of you, would you be anything other than respectful and complimentary to that person ?

I sort of wonder if I would turn into a blithering idiot ( no comments from the peanut gallery please....... ) Or if I would at least be able to conduct myself in a dignified way, and be able to express appreciation for the joy their music has brought to me over the years.

Are there people here who would "give them an earful" ? really ?????? Just curious.

No, I would be civil... it's one thing to discuss these things with fellow fans on a message board... but I don't think it's really my place to lecture them whether or not I agree with their decisions.

I was very civil with each member that I met. I always try to be very positive each time I talked with them. (Read my past posts for bragging stories - LOL)

It was hard for me to interview JY since there were so many things I wanted to say, but I was just positive and it was a good interview, well from him.

I would ask Dennis to play Bioxi MS, and put out more material.

Larry I would ask how many people have given him a hard time ovr replacing DDY. I would also tell him I wouldn't want to be in his shoes, but tell him he is going a great job, at an impossible job. Also tell him to hit JY upside the head with his Keybaord the next time the going running around it. MAybe it would knock some sense in to him.

JY- I would tell to shutup, but in a nicer way. Let him know how is negative comments hurt him and the band.

Tommy-This is your band now, not a Tommy solo cd, so share the vocals more, that was one of my negatives on Cly. Also shave!!!!

Todd-Keep up the good work

Ricky-Liked the BAd English cds (sorry don't know enough about him)

Well, despite their celebrity status, the band members are pretty much strangers to me, so I would certainly treat them as I would anybody else I met for the first time, ie. avoid personal questions, offering advice, etc., etc. Strangely enough, though I love this band, past and present, I've no strong desire to meet any of them. If it happened, that'd be great, but I would never go out of my daily routine to make it happen. Popping in all those great CDs and taking in the occasional show is plenty for me.

Great question! I pretty much did "...turn into a blithering idiot...." the first & only time I met all of them (was totally intimidated by JY). I've since been blessed enough to end up backstage at a number of DeYoung shows and have gradually been able to work myself up to something approaching a civilized conversation.

If I were to run into any of the current line-up, I would probably keep my mouth shut. At the very least I'd be civil and make some complimentary comments on their classic hits.

I've found they prefer it if you don't grab their legs and scream, so I stopped doing that.

Zan, where did you get the dancing banana?? I have one of those on my VH1Classic board and I love it. I have been looking for the banghead guy. He would be perfect for this board sometimes.

Kathie, of Styx traveller fame, found it somewhere and kept it as a pet. She lets me use it from time to time. :)

Yes, so true, the shoes!!!!!! - LOL

Zan says:

LOL - that's really funny because I've seen that a few times after the shows. I think if I met Tommy in the 80's I would've been like that - LOL

When I first met Dennis and JY back in 1990 I was SO nervous. I was speechless for the first 10 minutes (those that know me, I'm sure can't believe it-LOL) My brother had to talk for me, until I became comfortable

I love the banana!!

Suite, do you mind elaborating on what made you so nervous about meeting them?

Just remember, you asked and I like to talk

Sure, Styx was my favorite group of all time (and still is). Growing up I always thought it would be really "neat" to someday meet my favorite group. My brother and I talked about it our whole lives (his favorite band is Rush). I never, ever thought that day would come, and it did. In the late 1980's and beyond I met a lot of the Milwaukee Brewers, GB Packers and even a few race car drivers, but again my dream was to meet my favorite band. At that time, I thought they were huge "celebrities" and that's what made me so nervous. Then after talking to Dennis for a while he was asking about my brother and I. (My brother has jogged my memory quite a few times-LOL). We talked about growing up in the Midwest, the weather conditions, Dennis made fun of my beat up record albums. The Grand Illusion is still held with duct tape (LOL) I played them to death - LOL I found those old signed record albums just a few years ago.

I feel a lot different when I meet and talk with celebrities. They're just people too. It's more fun now to be relaxed :)

If I knew how to put up a picture here, I'd put up the picture of the album. It is pretty funny.

I would simply tell them something simular to what I told Tommy years ago in an Email....

Thank you for creating such great music over the years and I hope you continue to do it long into the future.

I don't think anything more would really need to be said, at least by me.

I would just ask for a guitar pick for my daughter and an autograph - I only now follow Styx becouse of my daughter had she been enamered with Blue Oyster Cult I guess I would be following them. Thats not to say I have not become a bigger fan by making a father/daughter ritual once a year concert outing, just that I am not a celebrity seeker - there just people who are good at thier jobs.

It depends on the situation and setting. I've been to a few M & Gs, and I've had the chance to talk with all of them on various occasions, and more often than not, I DON'T comment on their music or the show - because it ain't like they don't already know I'm a huge fan (Hell, I'm surprised they aren't scared of me). ;-) I remember waiting in the hotel lobby for a friend of mine to finish getting ready, and the whole freaking band came through on their way to the gig. I think I said to Tommy "Nice shoes" because he was wearing these gawd-awful red flip flop things that stuck out like a sore thumb. He said, "Thanks! They make them for men too!" Of course, my boyfriend then began to laugh uncontrollably, and I had to crawl under the sofa. lol

Well, that was a rant. I guess I should see about getting some work done! LOL
