Question: Why must this line-up cover an old Styx song with every release?

To bring parts of the older catalog to new fans who buy the new cd

ItsMyLife: Question: Why must this line-up cover an old Styx song with every release?

Adam: Oh, I get it. Watch Styx make a move, mull over it, look for something to complain about, and then post it as if you're proving some point.

I can play that game too. Why does DeYoung mention how long he's been married at every concert? (gratuitous applause?) Why does he have his sister in law, and amateur wife and daughter on stage at every show? Why do we need to hear the same 'schoolmarm' motivational speeches everytime DeYoung performs?

Just one point...his daughter is not at every show, in fact, she hasn't been at any of the shows other than HOB since 2000.

If so, I stand corrected. I can tell you that she is not at most of the shows. She runs her own business and truly has not been at any of the shows that I or my friends have seen since 2000.

Did she appear for CSA only? taht is the norm for her time on stage.

Just for CSA.

Personally I don't care who Dennis puts on stage. Suzanne is kinda like Linda McCartney.... (I said kinda)

Froy: You prove time after time just how stupid you are

Adam: How so, Mien Froyd?

Does DeYoung NOT announce how many years he's been married at every concert (to gratuitous applause)? Has he NOT been giving the same motivational speech at every show since before you reached puberty? Okay, the consensus here seems to have established that I may have been wrong about his daughter getting onstage every show (just A LOT of shows), but doesn’t his wife get up there every show?

How am I stupid by asking these questions?

Listen, I don’t really care about who & what Dennis does on stage. In my book I find nothing WRONG with him bringing up his family or any other amateurs onstage (although it’s a bit annoying).

It’s the endless taunting attitude dished out by a number of DDY-ettes that make me jump into the pissing contest. I say if Dennis can bring up family amateurs and give redundant, stale speeches at every performance, then Styx has a perfect right to rearrange, redo and rerecord any of their old material, without the DeYoungians pointing out how it’s an indicator of how much they need Dennis. Styx seems to be maintaining an absolutely successful touring business (without the nightly sermons of Father DeYoung).

I would criticize ANY band that continually rehashes old classic material.... especially when it's shoehorned onto new releases just to sell a few more albums.

It's more acceptable on the covers disc but on Cyclorama it's kinda silly.

Okay, so from where ItsMyLife sits (stands?) DDY's live "Music Of Styx" CDs/shows/whatever falls into the 'lame' category...that unless unless ItsMyLife deems these covers to NOT be for the "wrong" or commercial reasons.

...a whole lotta leverage you're giving yourself on these rules of acceptability...

Again, for the Court, I site Clapton's bluesy "Layla" from his unplugged disc. If I were his manager, his record label, a retail record outlet, an heir to his empire, or the one zillion radio stations who benefited from the resounding success of this somewhat questionable and slightly lethargic remake of an absolute CLASSIC, I'd be wearing a shit-eating grin about the outcome of that self-cover.

Show me the rules and I'll show you an example of how breaking them can work.

1. Songs you freakin' wrote are not covers.

2. Obviously I wasn't talking about live albums.

SweatyAdamBlue wrote:Again, for the Court, I site Clapton's bluesy "Layla" from his unplugged disc.

Still not the same. An unplugged album is a live album. The main purpose of those is to reinvent/reinterpret your own songs.

The point was why do this with every release and especially why do this with a studio album of new songs.

To me, it takes away from that material standing on it's own merit.

Wow. The list of exceptions to the rules seems to grow leaps and bounds with every moment.

Your point was "why must this line-up cover an old Styx song with every release?"

Allow me to respond with your own words:

ItsMyLife: 1. Songs you freakin' wrote are not covers.

Adam: And since you mentioned it, the only “cover” I can think of on Cyclorama is a re-arranged snippet of “Fooling Yourself” (BUT I THOUGHT SONGS YOU FREAKIN’ WROTE ARE NOT COVERS!) which not only features a guest appearance by one of rock n roll’s all time GREATS (I know, ItsMyLife has no regard for rock history, so the Beach Boys of course wouldn’t matter) but lasts a minute AND ISN’T CREDITED WITH THE TITLE “FOOLING YOURSELF”!

It’s really hard to perceive that track as a “rehashed old classic” included for some cheapo reason.

ItsMyLife: Obviously I wasn't talking about live albums.

Adam: Then why do you ask “Why must this line-up cover an old Styx song with EVERY RELEASE?” They’ve put out only ONE studio disc of new material and the new COVER concept (to which the Froys of America will announce “Covers are filler!” “Doesn’t sound like Styx!” “True Styx fans hate covers except if Dennis does 'em!” or whatever reason to kick & scream they can invent).

ItsMyLife: An unplugged album is a live album. The main purpose of those is to reinvent/reinterpret your own songs.

Adam: Says you. I say the artist can do whatever the heck they WANT, which includes adding a sappy ballad like “Babe” to a rock band album, or the crescendo of a symphony orchestra at the end a Beatle album. I say an artist/act are free to rearrange their material anyway they like WHENEVER they like. Who are you – the MUSIC POLICE?

Enough with the conservitism. No rules in rock.

And if you really wanna get into picking, Clapton’s UnPlugged album was almost about as “live” as “Big Bang Theory”, since it was created in the controlled environment of a TV studio (where only a few seats were given to selected vip’s – no “real” audience) and filmed, recorded & edited a number of times, a number of takes, ultimately re-edited & remixed.

(Oh, and feel free to call me SweatyAdamBlue if it gets you off, but I think your Bon Jovi moniker is kind of EMBARASSING, you know? That song makes me nauseous and the guy’s singing is strained, annoying and painful. )

Most excellant! Thanks Kansas! :D

Now I'm actually excited about this CD! The songs sound quite a bit better than I was led to believe.

"I Can See for Miles" And "Summer in the City" sound particularly smokin' to me!

In response to It's My Life's

Question: Why must this line-up cover an old Styx song with every release?

That would've been a good point if it wasn't already known why BCM was redone. It was part of the Chess Studio recording session (I can't remember the foundation involved). It was not something they recorded just for this CD.

Yes, after you said that that Dennis was doing covers. Dennis is performing and billing himself as a solo artist doing his own songs.

I originally said "this line-up" which involves 3 guys that had ZERO to do with that song so they are essentially covering it.

You would think this line-up would want to establish itself on it's own merits, not cover a classic Styx song every time they turn around.

Unless they're hoping to sell more albums by actually including a classic song. And it IS called "Fooling Yourself (Palm Of Your Hands)" which sounds like something you engage in on a nightly basis.

We can go around on this ALL DAY if you'd like, but the point is you know exactly what I was referring to... so let's not debate the meaning of "is" Mr. Clinton.

Exactly. I could care less. If I want to hear the Beach Boys... I'll go listen to the BEACH BOYS. Novel idea.

No shit sherlock but go take a look at what most "Unplugged" albums consist of... reinterpretations of an artists catalog along with some covers. Duh. I'm not exactly reaching here but you're going to debate on this one too, huh?

Adam: How so? What's UNtrue about my statement? No reach, just the facts.

(I must say, I'm impressed that there could exist a fan of both DeYoung's voice and the screeching of BonJovi.)

Quick show of hands out there - HOW MANY READING THESE WORDS ACTUALLY THINK JON BON JOVI IS A GOOD SINGER?

And, for the record, I don't believe I EVER said I liked Gowan's singing.

As I've stated before my name is taken from a Kiss song written in 1982.

I like older Bon Jovi... "Slippery When Wet" is a classic and "New Jersey" is very good.

They went down hill after that other than the occasional ok song.

I actually think their "It's My Life" is a pretty catchy song. So sue me.

BBT Medley update,

The new samples sound great! Now you can hear a sample of every song on the CD.

Here is a short review of the new clips.

Find The Cost Of Freedom, This song really shows off the harmony just as I expected it would.

Locomotive Breath, JY sounds good singing this song it fits him well. I hope there are some Styx harmonies somewhere in this song.

Manic Depression, This song also fits JY’s voice but I have never liked this song to begin with. I’ll have to hear the whole song before I can decide.

Talkin About The Good Times, This was the surprise of the CD for me so far. I had never heard of this song before and I was expecting it to be a blues song. Judging from the short clip it sounds like classic Styx.

Wishing Well, Great rocker. It reminds me of the wooden nickel days. Who is singing the high part with Tommy?

A Salty Dog, Larry sounds good doing this one. This song is along the lines of Pieces Of Eight. Another song where I hope to hear those great harmonies but couldn’t tell if there in this song from the short clip.

The quality of this CD seems to be outstanding. The music itself is Styx all the way. The style and sound of the guitars are instantly recognizable of the classic Styx sound and the musicianship seems flawless. So far I am very happy with what I have heard. Has anyone heard the complete CD yet?

Thanks for the heads-up Styxfan!!! :D

I agree with ChicagoStyx, this sounds like it's gonna be a good CD.
Funny you mentioned hearing a bit of the Wooden Nickel sound. That was my gut reaction too.

I KNEW "Locomotive Breath" was gonna smoke! That song's perfect for JY!

There is a distinct sound to the guitars on a lot of Styx songs. And it seems to be on Big Bang Theory in full force. More so then on Edge, Brave, or Cyclo.
